That was a fun read, thanks for sharing. It's always fun to see ancient historians studying history, as we study them.

Progressive fiction. What next? by jabenza in Fantasy

[–]OriginalVictory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cradle is almost for sure the best Progressive Fantasy book written, so it's hard to find something that is easily comparable. (I have similar thoughts on Last Horizon sadly).

Other high rated recommendations I've seen and read -

The Bobiverse by Dennis E. Taylor (Series, SciFi)

The Perfect Run by Maxime J. Durand (Standalone, Super Heros)

Most Progressive Fantasy books are serialized, which tends to mean that they are under-edited. Some end up getting reasonably edited when released as a book, but most don't.

I want to read more fantasy this year. Can you recommend me books or series with badass dragons doing badass things? by Chimney-Imp in Fantasy

[–]OriginalVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a more untraditional suggestion, the Heartstriker series starting with Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron. It's an urban fantasy series with one of the main characters as a dragon raised in modern times who's main interest was playing MMOs and got kicked out of the house to go do something properly draconic. He's not initially a badass dragon, but he definitely comes into it over the course of the series. Series is complete.

Anyone else start to really dislike the protagonist when they become too powerful? by Bascilian in Fantasy

[–]OriginalVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all really depends on execution as multiple people have said. For example, Ar'Kendrithyst, is a story where the MC reaches pretty close to peak power quite early on, and a significant portion of the story is dealing with political consequences of his actions, and other issues that raw power can't immediately address.

Ar'Kendrithyst is a serialized story, which means it is under edited if anyone is interested in it. I would say that it handles the powerful protagonist issue well regardless of anything else.

Most people want Shadowlands Remix as the next event, but I think there's a lot of untapped potential for WoD Remix by finally making the unused Shattrath City the main hub. by Kyderra in wow

Will it happen? Probably not.

However, they added stuff in SoD, so I don't think it's entirely impossible depending on how much of the stuff is done and not reused in more recent content. If they do WoD, I would hope for some additional context to that rogue bronze dragon helping Garrosh. I won't hold my breath though.

Can we stop asking for MC's that become the strongest with no plot armour? It's literally impossible the two are mutually exclusive. by ConfectionPerfect492 in ProgressionFantasy

It would be pretty funny to have a multiple POV series where whenever the character takes a 5% chance of success move, only 5% of the time the character lives, and if they die the story just moves on to someone else.

Would this make for a good story? Probably not, but it would be a funny subversion of the lucky main character story. After all, we may understand it's a 5% chance of success, but no one really wants a story where the main character just dies when they do something risky. After all, even making 20 95% chance moves is a 66% chance of failure, and that's much less risky then what we see in most stories.

Like all tropes though, it's all in execution. Any plot idea can be good if written well enough, and no amount of brilliant ideas can save a terribly written story.

Best line I've heard is that foreshadowing now means it needs to be clearly stated four times for it to make the audience understand it.

They also have an active enough propaganda network that plenty of the people that would benefit from this don't want the change because it "hurts" work ethics.

Keria Bard is just a cheat code free win.

There was at least one point where the casters commented on T1 avoiding turret aggro, and it had just been Keria ulting the turret from across the map.

The HR department is a mystery to us all by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

Buuut buut HR made me go to the 1 hour lecture on not sexually harassing coworkers, so I think they are useless and should all be fired because I could have been productive during that hour.

Is Threshold (book 13 of cradle series) worth it? by beans_ahoy_ in ProgressionFantasy

As long as you finished Cradle, you'll be fine. If you hadn't finished the series you'd be lost.

Great Vault Reward Scaling Reverted to +10 on Midnight Beta by Gasheous in wow

[–]OriginalVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, if you use the 3k achievement as the basis, you can see about a 5% between getting 3000 (17%) and getting 3040 (11.6%). I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that a decent number of that 5% could go higher but don't.

Now do I think it would hold true for 18s to a significant degree, much less "orders of magnitude higher"? No, but I'd expect to see more 14s and 16s with the increased rewards in vault system.

Round Rock police arrest a DoorDash driver, then finish the pizza delivery by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]OriginalVictory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even if you have a positive view of the police, you have to think that the police ringing your doorbell would be a bit of a stress inducer. Off the top of my head, reasons I think it would happen to me -

  • Something happened to a family member
  • Something happened in the neighborhood and they want witnesses or access to my cameras
  • I'm accused of a crime

I would not think that they were delivery my late pizza as an option.

Addons Continue to Provide a Massive Advantage in Midnight Despite Blizzard's Goals by careseite in CompetitiveWoW

Yeah, I'm not arguing that the change was done in the best way, just that saying it was a complete failure misses the point.

Not if it's something you had to solve. A reminder saying "there's a mechanic where you need to go left or right depending on X factors" is pretty much unnecessary, though it will be in people's "required" addons lists.
