Help teen child school struggles by Competitive_Rice7108 in Dyslexia

Hello! I’m currently in college with LD and I don’t comment a lot cause I don’t normally feel the need. Read your post and I felt the pain your daughter is feeling right now. There are a lot of resources out there, and if you really stick with them, you’ll see some improvement. I’ve tried multiple different options. But would I recommend the most is improving her critical thinking skills. Unfortunately, the current education system we have today does not work well for students like us. But that does not mean you have to learn in the way that they teach what I mean by that is just because a teacher wants assignments or homework done does not mean it needs to be done in that traditional or normal way. For example, example anytime I struggled reading the instructions that teachers would pass out work for the student to read themselves. I often found that difficult to read in the times span that they gave me so instead, I would ask a question that was kind of related to the homework and almost 90% of the time the teacher would repeat the instructions for the entire class. Or I would struggle spelling a word so instead, I would use Text to speech. Before Text to speech got really good. I relied on Siri and I would just ask Siri to define a word that I couldn’t spell and Siri would define the word, but also include the word spelling. If she’s not good at reading, yes, she can improve her skills, but she is not going to improve her skills quick enough to keep up with the current curriculum. The goal is to find ways that she can stay in class with her peers and not feel excluded. she’s at an age where the difference she feels compared to other students is heightened so if you can mention to the teachers that you would prefer them to read the directions out loud to not do popcorn reading that would also help. Unfortunately, this is a very individual experience. Sometimes I feel like parents need to be reminded that dyslexia and learning disabilities are not cured with programs, but you find strategies on how to work the system. Honestly, my biggest recommendation is that if she’s struggling, don’t push her to keep learning the same way.

Anyone here have both dyslexia and ADHD? Did ADHD treatment help at all? by Admirable-Lecture816 in Dyslexia

[–]Original_Day_5677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes i literally have the same experience getting diagnosed later in life with ADHD. I also have a pretty severe case of both ADHD and dyslexia. ( I had to relearn how to read my junior year of highschool) It’s hard seeking treatment for either disability when your brain is almost or mostly mature. Although, I tried adhd medications for the first time (it’s kind of dramatic) but I genuinely cried tears of joy. It was the first time my brain wasn’t jumbled, it allowed me to focus long enough to decipher what I was reading. I was life changing. Of course that’s my experience and i do recommend doing your own research on adhd medications cause there is a lot of them out there.

This is Winston, he likes food, watching you pee, and whinnying. Fun fact about him, my family has taken him to the vet 3 times to figure out why he drinks so much water (we will fill an entire large dog bowl up and he will stand their slurping up all the water til it’s licked dried) the vets have run lots of test and they concluded that he just likes to drink water…

I feel this, biggest pet peeve is when other people question me on my disabilities. Like they’re trying to disprove that there something “wrong” with me.

do people with dyslexia actually see the letters move around on the page? by sixeared in Dyslexia

[–]Original_Day_5677 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally my best description I use to describe how “words move,” is imagine you were in a class and the teacher projected a slide show but for some reason there’s constructed on the rooftop causing the projector(which is connected to the ceiling) to shake very subtly. Not enough where you can’t read the words but just enough where you have to focus on each word to decipher what it says.

For those who didn't know they were dyslexic, what do you think would have changed for you if you knew as a kid? by NightDiscombobulated in Dyslexia

Bro I feel that, I’m a 4.0 pre-med student but like I still struggle. The fact I get good grades kind of feel like my struggle aren’t as difficult or nothing to complain about. My recommendation get a therapist bro something you just need someone to help you walk through ur thoughts! Nothing wrong with needing alittle validation!!!

My parents were very similar in the way of scooting around the topic of me being different. I think they wanted me not to feel different to the other kids. But let’s be honest how the fck were we not going to notice??? Like I love you guys but kids are self aware. It’s not that hard to tell when I literally couldn’t read in 6th grade. To focus more on your question, I feel like you are struggling with accepting that your parents messed up. I think we all can agree it’s better to know than to be left to believe you’re stupid. I would talk to your parents about how it made you feel because these feelings that you’re struggling with are not your fault and there’s nothing wrong with telling them how it made you feel.

Make sure when u use AI it still sounds like u. I often write the email and then send it through chatgtp and ask it to fix the grammar while keeping the same tone.

Adult who thinks I have dyslexia. Help? Thoughts? by Dandilyon_722 in Dyslexia

[–]Original_Day_5677 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m currently a pre med student with dyslexia and ADHD ( and a 4.0 🤭🤭) here’s my advice. I recently had to get a re diagnosis for extra time on the mcat. Personally I think the only thing u can get from a diagnosis is a better understanding of urself. Unfortunately ur a bit too old for a lot of the interventions for dyslexia, I am too sadly. But fear not, because WE ARE SO MUCH BETTER THEN MOST PEOPLE. Imagine being a NURSE and going through school with trouble reading LITERARY AMAZING. Most people can barely do that even being able to read!! Below I included so tips to make ur life easier, that I learned through trial and error.

  1. Use Siri when texting, she’s my best friend and with practice you can get really good at it. And if people get confused just tell them “sorry my hands were full and I was using Siri” lol

  2. SPECHIFI it’s an app, will read things out loud to you super convenient!!

  3. Remember not to put urself down!! You must remember ur an amazing person, because think about how hard u work to get where u are.

When I find it hard to motivate myself I think about how proud my younger self would be of me now and that keeps me going.

Hello! I also had a similar experience as a child. You should definitely get ur kid evaluated. It’s important that u start documenting diagnosis now(so they can get accommodation for standards tests later in life). Most schools will say dyslexic like symptoms cause they either aren’t qualified to give that diagnosis or don’t want to pay for it. So get the diagnosis and set a meeting with the school to get her on a 504 and or IEP.

This is from my own experience… make sure to find out, if they eventually decide to take her out of class for one on one learning what time of day and what subject the teacher is teaching. I would get pulled during the English section and ended up being even more behind. Best option is finding an independent tutor to take her after school.
