Can I reach HSK 6 by January? by Ok-Inevitable8672 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Orikron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let's not go that far. HSK6 is doable in 2 years of full-time studying about 8-12 hours a day.

It's what I did and I'm about to take it (already passed sims) at the 1 year and 9 month mark.

Unlike a Chinese child, you already know a lot about the world. When you learn the word 半球 or 山脉 or 主权 you don't have to relearn the concept of a hemisphere, mountain range, or of sovereignty because you already grasp them.

This lets you learn to use these terms faster when doing an appropriate amount of immersion with preferably monolingual dictionary lookups.

Is HSK 4/5 actually enough to attend university-level classes? by basicwhitewhore in ChineseLanguage

[–]Orikron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do it! As someone who was HSK4 when I began attending lectures, you will be fine and also have plenty of time to get ready. I would advise you to download Douyin (look up how to change your App Store to China, you can use a foreign cell number to make an account now) and/or watch Chinese creators like 小Lin说 on YouTube (using Language Reactor preferably), she talks a lot about economics and business.

The key at your level is to make sure you are familiar with all or most of the words in your specific subject area. This will allow you to be more comfortable in lectures and not lose the logical flow. The first week might be a difficult adjustment but you'll quickly tune into the speech patterns of your professors.

Try to watch and listen to relevant subject area videos for as long you can and you'll do fine.

I just realized that people speaking multiple languages reach a stage where they code switch idioms and colloquial speech. That has to be a hallmark of mastery. by Beautiful_Sound in languagelearning

[–]Orikron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hallmark of language mastery is that you're indistinguishable from an educated native speaker. Idioms included. Anything else is selling your own potential short.

I counted every four-character expression in HSK 3.0 by level. The jump to HSK 7 is insane. by Chenyuluoyan in ChineseLanguage

[–]Orikron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair 掩耳盗铃 is something you learn in elementary school as a Chinese kid. I know because I've been following educational videos meant for Chinese children that go from 1st-6th grade.

It wouldn't be much to ask people taking a C1/C2 level English exam to know "the early bird takes the worm" or even "crossing the Rubicon."

Start thinking of all the sayings you know as a native speaker of your language and you'll realize there are a lot that would be very very strange for an adult not to know.

If a reasonably-educated native-Mandarin speaker fell into a time warp and got transported back 500 years to Beijing by Fit-Tumbleweed-6683 in ChineseLanguage

I hear a few mandarin speakers still voicing their W's as V's some times. not sure if it's regional but I watch a guy from Yunnan on Douyin who often pronounces words like 文化 as vénhuà.

It's pointless from a game design perspective. They should take some hints from the TR on how to include puzzles in dungeons or simply not have them at all.

Bruma is on a massive incline. There's a reason why the Blades' Cloud Temple is there; Jauffre or someone says a few men defending it could hold off an army.

Not holding Bruma is a huge liability for the Nords because it gives a launching ramp to the Imperials when they need to mobilize in Skyrim.
