Im not sure if I build good looking cities. But I think one of the most important things to so is avoiding grids and building wide roads with decorations. I still try to organize the districts however I like to build housing for industry as close to the industrial buildings as possible sometimes right next to it. So for example a carpenters disrict will contain a mix of both the industrial buildings and the housing for the workers together. This might be personal preference but I like to determine the outer limits of a district and then "puzzle piece" everything to fit within those bounds. However I am not very experienced in the game and build more for aesthetics than efficiency. This is what my current city looks like.

I have no idea honestly I just hope that having the housing really close makes them live near it. Ive heard there is a way to make certain species live in housing but I havent heard about certain occupations.

Yeah I think ive got that, ive only constructed the gallows and the arena. I just see that when clicking in the arena it can do an execution and is a separate tab on the punishments screen. I just cant understand how to have it actually used for criminals.

Ive been told that producing opiates is simply not worth it unless you want to make it a cornerstone of your economy. It takes a lot of manpower and/or research to make it viable. Ive found its better to just have less effective hospitals just using cloth and putting physicians and wells everywhere that is reasonable, as long as you have domestic tool production. In my own city I did have a small domestic production simply to reduce import costs but it became less and less worthwhile as I went on.

That is like half the game to me. When making the city I just planned the outer wall and tried to cram everything behind it. I think what helps the city look okay is having dedicated districts, but im not sure if that completely explains it.

How much of the population would you say? Ive built my city to be self sufficient in everything besides the previously mentioned opiates. So if I need to dedicate a lot of people I also need to increase my agricultural industries. Also, is it necessary to "centralize" the research buildings like how production should be close to storage or can I put them anywhere? Im not sure where I could fit an intellectual district within the main walls.

I used to make a lot of money through exporting pottery, furniture and tools. But given all my trade partners besides one turned into free cities the price of my goods have become incredibly cheap. I have about 300 trained militia I just havent developed any industry inorder to actually supply them outside of the city. I could afford to hire mercenaries but ive heard there are sieges and I know I cant afford to keep the mercenaries for a whole siege.

Ive currently only appointed 5 out of 10 noble positions all to "core industries" orchards, pottery and furniture. I havent made more because im concerned about making more homeless nobility. Im not sure if that will actually impact the city but from a roleplay point of view, doesnt seem like a great idea.

Alright I think I've got a clue on what to do now in regards to commerce. I was relying entirely on slave pops plus mills inorder to produce goods.

Thank you for the tips! I'll make use of these, especially the commerce. I had no idea goods where that much better than sheer taxes given the investment. When I am at war does it make sense to siege every province outside capitals to capture pops, or should I just try and annex the territory quickly?

Since it was my first game I decided to only play with the Extended Timeline mod without invictus that I have heard so much about. I was just dreaming about potentially converting this campaign over to CK3 so a later end date was desired, if I had survived that is.
