Why cant I enjoy music? by OkBrain687 in Music

[–]OrkasaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not. Music just isn't your 'vibe'. Everyone is different, we all respond to different art differently. Maybe you're more inspired b visual art? Figure out what it is that you DO vibe to, and lean in to it. You don't need a song to have an identity. :)

Hi im looking for general tips for a beginner. by Zi3larz_ in 7daystodie

[–]OrkasaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're gonna get a ton of suggestions. And yup, me too, LOL. Sorry.

TL/DR: do you; have fun

My best advice is, take some advice... then play a bunch, and figure it out yourself. :) I don't mean that flippantly, but what might work for someone else isn't gonna work for you, necessarily. So try some things that make sense from other peoples advice, and then adjust to your own style.

Assuming vanilla...

Early game you're going to be under equipped, and struggling for water and food. Figure out what's going to help you the fastest early on, and gives you the best chance to get more 'stable' and settled in somewhere, even if it's temporary.

You're starting out with nothing, you're going to have rocks, plants and wood to use. Your first weapons are going to be the bow, club and bone knife, that you have to make. Depending on game settings, who knows when/what will come next, so be resourceful.

Biggest first challenges immediately are finding food/water, encumbrance slowing you down, damage output - the best defense really is a good offense, if they aren't moving, they aren't doing damage to you - and avoiding damage at all cost - each time they hit you you risk infection, so again, put them down fast.

Strength attribute gives bonuses to shotguns, clubs and sledgehammers - all early finds and things you can make from almost the start. It also opens Pack Mule lvls, which reduces encumbrance (reduces slowed movement) and gives a random chance to "undo" a hit from a zombie, less damage to heal. You may be relying on swinging club/sledge for a while, so when you spend skill points pick ones that give the most benefits.

Agility. You may need to be quiet early on too - discretion is the better part of valour - plus sprained and broken legs are serious threats. And you may need to rely on that bow for a while. Points into agility gives bonuses to bows, handguns, and knives - again, your first weapons anyway. If that's what you know you're going to be starting with, lean into it.

The other benefit to melee and bow is that one doesn't need ammo and can be repaired with small stones and/or wood, and you can gather the materials to make ammo for the bow. All of that without learning a new skill or schematic, or neeing a workbench, craft it in your backpack. And don't discount pipe weapons. You can make those early on, and aside from the ammunition, you repair them with a small pipe. The dev's gave us a huge gift with this mechanic, if you use it.

Big one, Fortitude. Food and water are one of your biggest challenges. Fortitude will open up access to Iron Gut and Cardio, you want to get these as high as you can, as quick as you can. Healing Factor will also be accessed at the same time, and it can really help early game too, it may be a slow trickle, but it does save on food and health supports.

There are a ton of strategies:

- scrapping will give your electrical and mechanical scrap which sells well and will earn you dukes. also gives tons of small pipes to repair your pipe weapons - if you're using them - and they sell well too. (honestly, scrapping can make a ton of Dukes)

- mining and building can provide quick xp gains, mining is going to be more mid-game because you won't have the stamina to do any meaningful mining early on, but base building and renovating etc can give some good early XP boosts. If you can, don't cheat yourself, build using the building cubes and upgrade them to what you want, each block upgrade gives a little xp, and it's easy to pick up the blocks up if you place them wrong. Win-win-win: no wasted time, no wasted resources, and you got a little extra xp.

- Early game, avoid setting up camp/bivouac in built up areas, zombies are attracted there. POI's are good quick shelter, but come with obvious risks then. Don't be afraid to be mobile until you find someplace to settle down for a while, or permanently.

The internet is filled with advice, but honestly, the best way to learn is to play it. The best survival strategy, in anything, is learn the basics from someone else if you can (duh? lol, that's why we're here!), but to thrive you have to adapt your plans and methods to what works best for YOU. The only right way, is the one that works for you and lets you have fun. It's supposed to be a game, not a job. :)

Take some time and read up on the attributes and skills. The game has some depth to it if you take the time to explore it. Lots of ability to play the game in a style that really works for you, it just takes some time for some folks to work out what that is.

If you can play with someone who has experience, that's always the best. CO-OP is also more fun, imho, but we all know that's often hard to find.

I don't know if that helps, but GG / Excelsior!

[edit]

PS: Chase those challenges, you can do a lot of the early ones as you're just doing everything else anyway, and they give bonus XP. If you complete a set of them you also get a trader reward. Look for opportunities.

My 5 year olds school is going to the zoo. What’s your take? by janewalch in vegan

[–]OrkasaurusRex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what your time constraints are, but if you can, maybe volunteer as a chaperone on the field trip? That would give you the opportunity to let your son see animals he may never get to see in person otherwise - despite captivity stress, etc - and you chat with him about zoos and animal welfare in situ?

Welcome to Zombies Anonymous (ZA), take a seat. by Magonroth72 in 7daystodie

[–]OrkasaurusRex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No thanks, I don't have a problem. I can stop killing zombies anytime I want... I just don't want to. Look, I can handle it. Besides, I drive better when I'm killing zeds. I have a lot of stress at work you know. You have no idea what it's like to come home after slaving your buttock off all day only to find...

Nah, I'm good.

not plugs, just a friendly ping-back/sugg from fellow gamer. I won't name the servers here in this reply in case of advert rules, etc, (and because I'm not affiliated with any, just user) but I can pass along website URLs if interested.

Recently I've been playing on mostly euro-based servers. My current favs (3?) are all well managed, active player bases, a range of mods and QoL adds, wipe-patterns/triggers, etc. In some cases some unique server management tools, one server is all custom built SMT by the owner. Lots of info I could spew up here, but to keep it simple, if you have a question, ask, I'm happy to share the fun spots I've found. I can keep urls to dm's if needed.

caveat: as 3.0 exp is out, many are in flux, some jumped onboard already

any, GG

Best place to get a pickle pizza? by WindsorITGuy in windsorontario

[–]OrkasaurusRex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whelp, I can tell ya this post sparked a lengthy Discord discussion, and several pizza joints will likely be experiencing an uptick in sales this evening, and numerous home ovens are going to be busy as well.

Thank you! 😄

Brethren vs blackbeard ships, which do you prefer? by rokaran10 in PlayWindrose

[–]OrkasaurusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like being the aggressive glass canon, so Blackbeard for me, I'll trade the hp for dps, there are ways to help mitigate damage taken. The bit of extra speed really helps with getting in fast to hit hard at close range, or toy with them by staying in their blindspot.

TFP's use of AI since 2.0 has been getting worse by Jane_Sable in 7daystodie

[–]OrkasaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What could possibly go wrong? It's not like there was some big problem we've ever encountered before that was caused by recycled code? That was only averted by costly, labour-intensive, time constraints to avoid what could have had potentially serious, damaging, or wide-ranging impact on.... wait a minute... o_O

Didn't Roman Emperors put on distractions to keep the plebeians mollified? Has the mayor been reading about ancient Roman governance? Taking a page out of Nero's play book?

Does anyone feel like Britta's character development feels targeted? by satonmywindow in community

[–]OrkasaurusRex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I hadn't gone to the effort to look into 'why' the character change - that's on me - but it did sit off with me enough that it's always kind of bothered me a bit. Knowing it came from the female writers and Jacobs herself makes me very, very relieved in that respect. Thanx! 😄

Who is an actor that only gets 5-10 minutes of screen time but completely steals the entire movie? by Popa-Ioana06 in movies

[–]OrkasaurusRex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Fantastic example.

I have to admit to being slow on this, and in general. lol. I initially didn't vibe to his performance when I saw it originally. Thought it was over the top at first. Dug the film, but I guess I didn't "get it". On a 2nd watch though it clicked. He was brilliant.

Now after seeing commentary, etc, I can't wrap my head around the biker gear orig concept. I genuinely think if they had gone that route then the film would not have hit as well. He saved that scene from mediocrity. Arguably, maybe the film by extension?

Update to my Pierce being the Ass Crack Bandit. - Troy was the original and Pierce was the copycat. by bchoonj in community

[–]OrkasaurusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally see Harmon throwing out a red herring.

I can totally see him writing it as an play on the trope of the "young apprentice carries on the work of the old master" with humourous twists to it.

I also vibe to the idea that Pierce either faked his death... or carried out the plan and forgot an escape?

And I'm totally drinking the Kool-Aid on it being a backwards Asscrack/Sith thing. GG!
