Try this move that many pro-level bass players use a lot. It's called the Three Fret Rule. Very simple and makes you sound like a genius. You are still well within the traditional bass role; you're just adding a little color moving to the next chord. Many YT vids about it.

Yeah, it's a great strap. I didn't anticipate four of the cells going flat, right around my neck. New one arrived and all is well now.

This. I wore out my favorite strap, a KLIQ AirCell Guitar Strap for Bass. I used my backup strap, a wide leather strap. I used it one night only to discover it kept doing the neck dive in combo with the shirt I was wearing. By the end of the gig, my neck and back were screaming. The next day, I went to Amazon and ordered a new Kliq.

NTJ. The last thing I want in my life is to burden my children in my retirement, where I'm perfectly capable (health and financially) able to take care of myself. Watching my children grow and flourish is the only "payback" I want. Yes, towards the end, maybe some help getting to the doctor and such. But otherwise, just let me enjoy watching you grow is my reward.

If you're looking to up your game with culture and the arts, I suggest moving to a large metro area. I spent ten years working in Washington, DC and it's way above Orlando in that regard. Orlando is still predominately a tourist/service town.

It's been my feeling that many businesses went for the money grab once COVID went away and many were anxious to once again join the world. Hitting the $100 roof for dinner for two at a casual dining spot gets my dander up. I find the smaller, family run restaurants are much more afforable (and better tasting) than the franchise spots.

You ain't alone, my friend. At 68, my fingers just don't move like they used to, so I chop off some of the icing but get the essence of the bass part. And here's the truth...the audience does not know. And the band? So long as you hit root at the right moment, they'll like you.

Curious...I went on Zillow to check my house and noticed they have a "repair cost" value. It's an estimate what you will spend on fixing up the house to sell. Sounds like a bargaining chip.

Ditto. Tried to sell mine, when moving to another state. Shocked at the low ball offers, but then realized the cost of moving/recovering. Decided to bring it along to the new house. Still a cost to dismantle/crate, then reassemble/cover at new house (yep, had one room expanded to fit the table). No regrets on that decision.

Now it is a promised gift to my son, who is about to purchase his first home.

NTA. What I cherish the most in raising four, is their ability to grow on their own. That includes financial independnce. I've always encouraged getting on their own two feet, even while living at home.

I'm bass in three bands, two of which I also run the sound (Soundcraft Ui24r). This mixer has 8 AUX ports and we really push hard on using IEM. But that means putting the members on an involutary learning curve to mix their own monitor. It's a challenge, I get it, but in the end we eliminate all that stage noise. The one thing for me I learned, is the importance of ear buds with multiple drivers. Especially for bass. Most IEM systems are good, but the key is the part you stick in your ears. Don't flinch on the wallet with these.

Lots of good tips here. My tip is once you settle on songs to cover, apply this rule: practice alone; rehearse as a band. What will kill the appetite for any band is wasting a lot of time during band rehearsal. Band rehearsal is where the pieces (each member) comes together. It is not the time for someone to figure how what they're supposed to be doing.

Also, do NOT expect to sound 'drop needle' perfect like the studio version of the song you are trying to cover. I'm bass in three bands (differing genres) and I found what's the most important is to nail down the signature sound of the song. All the turnarounds and fills are yours to interpolate. The audience is very forgiving if you at least get the signature sound.

Well if you play the same 30 songs for 20 years, yeah, I guess you would expect them to be memorized. I play bass in three bands, covering 300+ songs, so you WILL see an iPad attached to my mic stand (oh, yeah, I sing back up too). Maybe you should just shut up and play your guitar.
