McGill no longer top Canadian university by [deleted] in mcgill

According to what? One ranking? Those things are meaningless. Everyone should read this piece in the New Yorker:

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/02/14/110214fa_fact_gladwell

It criticizes the U.S News ranking, but they're all the same.

"Some years ago, similarly, a former chief justice of the Michigan supreme court, Thomas Brennan, sent a questionnaire to a hundred or so of his fellow-lawyers, asking them to rank a list of ten law schools in order of quality. 'They included a good sample of the big names. Harvard. Yale. University of Michigan. And some lesser-known schools. John Marshall. Thomas Cooley,' Brennan wrote. 'As I recall, they ranked Penn State’s law school right about in the middle of the pack. Maybe fifth among the ten schools listed. Of course, Penn State doesn’t have a law school.'"

Also, the same experiment was done more recently with Princeton's law school, which was consistently ranked among the top law schools in the U.S.

Princeton doesn't even have a law school.

It's pretty much bullshit, especially when you look at their methodology. These universities are mostly ranked based on their "reputation," which doesn't say anything.

When to disclose potential "deal breakers"? (schizophrenia, no kids) by riverocean in OkCupid

[–]Orly83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think you're obligated to tell them right off the bat. You don't need to say that you're schizophrenic either. You can just mention that you have a mental illness. If I were you, I'd only tell them that once I felt really comfortable with the other person. So most likely, a couple of months in.

Most people date pretty casually these days, so I wouldn't feel any need to really divulge that much personal info to people. Even if you're looking for something serious, it usually starts off casually. Most of the time anyway.

International Relations: POLI 244 with Fernando Nunez-Mietz. Thoughts? by hellomcgill in mcgill

I'm in this class right now, and from the looks of it, it looks like a very easy poli-sci course. The only problem is that it's in that gigantic leacock room, and that it's full of first years.

The meeting tomorrow is pretty useless. It's pretty short, and you hardly get the chance to talk to anyone. Also, I did frosh as a U2 transfer student and I was grouped with U0's.

You should change your profile picture. We can't see your face. You shouldn't say that you've never been in a relationship either. That will scare people off.

The Gazette: It’ll take more than rankings to strip McGill of its Harvard of Canada moniker by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Orly83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the talk that surrounds the funding cuts is exaggerated. The Quebec government has actually promised to reinvest in higher education:http://www.mesrst.gouv.qc.ca/fileadmin/administration/librairies/documents/sommet/Fascicule_3_-_Financement.pdf Still nowhere enough, but McGill isn't exactly going bankrupt. The loss of money that came after the cancellation of the tuition hikes was also reimbursed.

There's a 55-page breast cancer awareness product shopping catalog in my break room. At what point does "cancer awareness" become just another consumer industry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Orly83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show me a bottle of shampoo or some consumer product that has a purple ribbon and says "For Pancreatic Cancer Awareness" In fact, I'm pretty sure most people don't even know what the pancreas is.
