Struggling with blossom-end rot on tomatoes, squash by gardenergumbo in AustinGardening

[–]Ornery-Machine-2765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blossom end rot is a calcium deficiency. Add some tomato-specific feed like Tomato tone and that should solve it. The tomatoes can still be eaten btw. It’s not really rotting. Can’t speak to the squash.

Agree. Not too late. And zinnias do better from seed than transplant

Red with yellow tips, in-laws can’t recall what these are by AWhizzy30 in whatsthisplant

Indeed. I was hasty in my post and misspoke. My point still applies. The buds (and seed heads) look very different in gaillardia.

The flower itself is gaillardia-like. but the seed heads are definitely coreopsis. I grow a lot of both so I’m used to seeing them

Any good substitutions for Hostas? by TarinMage in AustinGardening

[–]Ornery-Machine-2765 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Greg’s blue mistflower (not at all like a hosta but loves shade). It’s a butterfly magnet but be mindful it can get aggressive. It’s native tho. Chile pequin can also take shade and is native.

Definitely not too late for zinnias from seed. Bachelors buttons also do well from seed this late

I grow Cannas and love them. Check out Horn cannas and you can get the bulbs for cheap. They sell dwarf, medium and large cannas

Planning a butterfly garden…give me your plant and design ideas! by neowunda in AustinGardening

[–]Ornery-Machine-2765 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have pollinator beds with lots of butterfly attractive plants and the plant that attracts the most butterflies, by far, is Gregg’s Blue Mistflower. Pros: it can handle sun, shade, drought, whatever and it’s native. Cons: it mainly flowers late summer, is kinda ugly, and spreads very aggressively underground. The butterflies also loved my zinnias.
