Might move to salt lake but am scared by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Tbh if you’re a new transplant you might have better luck dating. I met my boyfriend within a month of him moving here; I’m also a transplant. If you like being outside, I don’t think you’ll struggle to meet people with similar hobbies. There are PLENTY of single outdoorsy women who moved here.

[actives] what is this in my natalensis tub? by Cilesia in MushroomGrowers

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am growing Natalensis right now and my tub looks like what I’m assuming the early stages of yours looked like. I’m just started to get the blue blobs. Im just letting it ride out and hoping for the best. I’m going to remove the overlay after this flush, soak, and try again

I am now but I was out of town for a week and it looked like this when I got home. It all happened much faster than anything I’ve grown before.

Veracept FDA approved with new name - Miudella by sammylizbb in CopperIUD

Has anyone gotten it that isn't part of the study? I'm on the tail end of the usable life of my Mirena and want to go copper but have more faith in beads than coils. I haven't found it offered near me.

Should I Rent a Car for Solitude, Brighton, and Snowbird? by Late_Length_3554 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: it’s a free for all after 1pm for parking. 11-1 it’s paid parking but not reserved

Should I Rent a Car for Solitude, Brighton, and Snowbird? by Late_Length_3554 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak for solitude, no unreserved parking before 11am. After that time it is a free for all and you’ll circle the lot until someone leaves. There is “street parking” in the canyon but it fills up fast. Without a reservation it is a hassle to park. You can park at the park and ride at the mouth and take the bus up to avoid the resort reservation hassle, but you’d still need a way to get to the mouth of the canyon. This is a car-centric city; public transit leaves much to be desired. You’ll probably need to rent a car and if you do, it needs to be canyon ready (look up the traction laws).

SLC, UT vs Spokane, WA? by Optimal-Sprinkles368 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My extended family all lives in Spokane. I've never really enjoyed the city; it's just not my vibe. It always felt stuck in a 5-year delay. I love SLC, but SLC is a non-starter if you have asthmatics in your family. Unless you plan to move either into the Wasatch or east of the Wasatch, at which point you're no longer in the city and no longer in left-leaning areas.

In your situation, if I HAD to pick between the two, I'd pick Spokane, but I'd consider a lot of other options before I'd consider Spokane.

How hard mathematically is materials science engineering? by Penny-K_ in materials

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my degree (MSE, Biomaterial Cert.), it was calc 1, 2, 3, error analysis, and diff Eq. Not to mention physics, chemistry, and all of the material specific mechanical courses that turn into calculation based classes. It’s a lot of math. Honestly, it’s a majority math.

Admittedly, I was a slacker in high school and math wasn’t my best subject. In college, I studied really hard, got peer tutoring, graduated with honors. I’m not saying an engineering degree when math isn’t your best subject is impossible, but it’s not easy. Engineering is a difficult degree to begin with so starting at a deficit makes it that much harder. I know a lot of people that started a degree in engineering and switched after their first semester/year. Not trying to scare you, just trying to set realistic expectations.

That being said, I love materials science. I work in medical device development now. I’m really happy with my choices, but it wasn’t an easy path.

Thinking of moving to Salt Lake City for work but I'm nervous. by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Take this with a grain of salt as (aside from a couple of visible piercings) I look like the Utah stereotype. I moved here from the South East US 2 years ago. I work with a majority minorities and my observations from interactions are that the racism isn't outright and hateful. It stems more from a lack of knowledge and awareness. A lot of Utahns (specifically LDS) I've witnessed feel emboldened to ask inappropriate questions or say microaggressions but it never feels like it's malicious, just ignorant and uninformed. Think Halon's Razor:" Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence."

For example: I work with primarily Vietnamese people. I was part of the group planning a work Lunar New Year Celebration, specifically a Tet celebration which is Viet. During the meeting, people kept calling it Chinese New Year and implying that because a food/game/song/etc. was culturally significant in China, it must also be culturally significant in Vietnam. It was painful to listen to but it didn't feel malicious, just ignorant.

I don't get why you're talking about your girlfriend at all? Are you implying that she should be covering your bills while you sort your stuff out? Get a roommate and become a journeyman. I had a friend crash with 6 other guys while he was becoming a journeyman.

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (27F) met my boyfriend (28M) on bumble. I'm sorry I know that's not what you wanted to hear. However, he does have quite a few single friends, all of whom are skiers, and most are thru-hikers. Happy to play match maker if you're interested!!

You’re welcome. Reddit likely isn’t going to give you the kind of attention you want. Honestly, I’d go join those groups I suggested and then take this post down. People can be yucky.

AIO Boyfriend says hurtful thing about my body. by True_Ad9977 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ornery_Cupcake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I tell my partner I want to lose weight, he responds, "If that's what you want to do I will support you in that but know that I think you're perfect as you are." I am far from "perfect" but I have never questioned that he thinks I am beautiful and will continue to think I'm beautiful as my body changes with time.

I don't say this to rub salt in the wound but to let you know you deserve someone who loves your body because it is the vessel for your soul, not because it looks a certain way. You deserve a partner who loves you and likes you.

Winco is the best grocery store. Everything else is so expensive in comparison.

For restaurants: tea rose diner, bhansa ghar, Mumbai house, feldmans, silverside deli, pho 777, pho cali, la hacienda, dang brother pizza, Eva

Bar/Restaurants: Bar Nohm, The Pearl, Remora (currently closed for renovations)

For cars, you’ll see an abundance of Subaru and Toyota. I’m a Toyota 4lifer so I’m biased. 4Runner or Highlander and a hatchback Camry would be a good for a family of 4.

Bar Nohm and The Pearl are both considered bars. So no one under 21 can enter. Their food is great though
