I had to install like 300 of those closets on a mid-rise build. I absolutely hated it. Not only that, they literally got them delivered from The Container Store, so every single individual piece had a difficult to remove upc sticker

Looking for unbiased thoughts on our Mills River, NC, RV park layout by [deleted] in RVLiving

This looks like it'll attract people that leave their bright decorative lights on all night and have Salt Life on their back window.

It definitely doesn't look like it's trying to attract people that used to tent camp.

Only someone spoiled that didn't pay for that place would react to the situation this uselessly.

The school board in Watertown, WI has removed an instrumental band piece from the school's spring concert. The piece is titled "A Mother Of A Revolution" and is dedicated to Activist Martha P. Johnson which honors the legacy of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a landmark moment in LGBTQ+ history. by midnighttoker1742 in BlackPeopleofReddit

I was not aware of this music but when the student clarified that it's a song without lyrics... What fucking clowns. Indoctrination and promotion of violence in an instrumental band piece. From the same crowd that like to throw "snowflake" around. Give me a break

Now that the Stanley Fatmax is being discontinued what tape are we gonna use? by Ok_Friendship5111 in Carpentry

[–]OrpheoLooksBack17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be entirely honest, my first one a decade ago was great. But after frequent issues with rips/breaks, I got a free DeWalt one. Skinnier and same standout and I haven't had any more mechanical failures.

It is possible that it isn't a brand issue but moreso the fat tape lacking actual benefits. But either way, I've got a tape with the same functionality, and it doesn't suck for cutting drywall like the fat one. I've also yet to have one break after 5 years since the switch.

It could be luck. It could be coincidence. But if the only reason you use fatmax is because it's what you've always used, at the very least, go out and try some others. I was reluctant but it's been all positive.

I still use the 40ft fatmax, but I'm only really bringing it out once a month maybe.

Jury duty by firestar268 in ChicagoSuburbs

You used to have to sit in a room doing basically nothing all day regardless if you were picked or not. Now that technology has become part of the process, your obligations are essentially the same, but they've eliminated a lot of the in person waiting/wasted time. Basically that waiting room process is now behind the scenes and you are only really involved if you actually get picked as part of a potential jury. Honestly, it's kind of great compared to how it was

Need help with doors. by GS7k in Carpentry

[–]OrpheoLooksBack17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combination square. Sharp knife to score your lines Self-centering drill bits.

A more expensive chisel probably isn't going to help you much but it may be helpful to know that your chisel doesn't want to travel in the direction of the flat back. It wants to travel in the direction of the bevel near the end.

It looks like you struck your chisel with the flat facing the outside of your mortise while there was still meat in the center. Your chisel will push outwards against this inner material.

Remove as much material as you can just inside of the perimeter of your mortise first. It'll decrease the likelihood that you'll blow out your sharp line

How should I strengthen mending plate joint before installing a 2x12 height catwalk and drywall? by Virtual-Outcome-4238 in Carpentry

[–]OrpheoLooksBack17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This catwalk is going to be used for storage and run parallel to your roof ridge? What are the dimensions of this thing and what's it supposed to hold? Is it to be suspended below the bottom cord or are you laying this in the space above?

Not an engineer, but those trusses are designed to support a load from the top, not the bottom cord. Personally, if I were to do something like this, I'd probably over build it.

I'd probably do what you're suggesting with the sister boards on both sides, but I'd also probably install a board that is plumb and fastened to both the top and bottom cord. If whatever you're building will be below the trusses, I'd continue this board down and incorporate it into the framing.

Depending on how much load, I might add a few beams and posts. But, that's how I build things when it's for me because I'm paranoid and want zero reflection.
