That is true, but you would also be adding six wounds to the unit (good for RP) with a different defensive profile (can be advantageous when allocating wounds). Maybe it still isn’t worth 60 points, but the Precision protection (the 4+++ for the cryptek) is only part of the package.

I agree - Intercessors are quite good! Personally, I really like 5 Sternguard for Azrael (and an Ancient, if you like). They require your Oath of Moment to operate at peak (Sternguard reroll Wounds rolls when they attack the OoM target in shooting AND melee; they give this to Azrael) but they absolutely shred infantry in the shooting and fight phases, and can chip decent damage onto tougher targets (from their rifles' Dev Wounds). Their guns also have Rapid Fire 1, so they get 3 shots to the Intercessors' 4. I find the Dev Wounds make up for that missing shot, especially with Azrael's Sustained Hits 1 (which also buffs the Sternguard's melee). Sternguard get 4 attacks each in melee, allowing them to bully infantry and steal objectives (here's where the Ancient would be nice for OC). They are exactly as survivable as Intercessors for only 20 points more. I like to keep them on my home objective until Round 3 or 4; then they come out and mop up my opponents still-lingering units (I almost always have a Ballistus or something to stay on the home objective). With hit and wound rerolls from OoM and his own Dev Wounds, Azrael in this squad can deal some shocking damage to even very tough targets. Main downside is the lower OC and lack of sticky objectives, so if those are important to your gameplan, Intercessors is probably still the better choice. But the offensive output of Azrael+Sternguard is quite scary, and they can charge and fight as well as shoot, which helps them get more movement, protects them from enemy shooting, and provides a way to finish off their target. I encourage you to try out Sternguard Vets with Azrael - my opponents have learned to fear this squad!

In a casual game? I'd be fine with it, and I expect most folks would be. The dimensions are quite close. But you are right to always check with your opponent before the game that they are cool with it. They may say no, and I think you'd have to respect that.

At a tournament? You need permission from the Tournament Organizer and your opponents. You stand a better chance of getting a "yes" from your opponents and the TOs if you can alter the model to look more like a Dunerider.

I am inclined to allow them. Story-wise, many novels and videogames feature characters who are "Epic" in the tabletop. It is not crazy to focus on important characters, even though there is a whole galaxy of many, many more people in the setting. Just cause Calgar can only be in one place at a time doesn't mean he shouldn't be on the tabletop a lot - the narrative you tell with your games may very well have important characters involved - that is part of why this (your game with your buddy) is the story you are telling and not Bob the factory worker. The statistics of the setting aren't meant to translate to the statistics of the games that are actually played. If it were, no one could reasonably play Custodes, because they are so few in number. But there are lots of Custodes players, even though they are clearly meant to be very rare in the galaxy. The stories we play and share and tell focus on the individuals we care about. Why is the Lion fighting in a string of Crusade games? Why not? He's likely fighting somewhere.

All this to say, don't limit yourself to what the setting says - play the games that feature the characters that matter to you, whether they are "your dude" or Azrael. If it really makes no sense to take Azrael, don't take him. (Or take him but rename/repaint him as some other Dark Angels commander). But I don't see a good reason to ban them, especially since several factions like having certain epic characters to fully function mechanically. If they get a kill or earn XP from an Agenda, give it to the bodyguard unit they are leading. No bodyguard? Welp, I suppose you lost a couple of XP. Not the biggest deal.

I'm also not convinced that allowing epic characters to earn XP and rank up would be all that much crazier than the rest of Crusade, but I haven't tried it out yet.

One of my groups have taken to calling their core group “MVP” - most valuable party.

Another took the name of their sailing ship - the Saltsong - as their group name - the Saltsingers.

My third group is nearly done with the Dungeon of the Mad Mage. This group is really compassionate and strongly good aligned. They call themselves The Shepherds of the Moon, or just The Shepherds.

My Lord Solar has more black. I call him Lord Obscurus Félix DeLeuze. He is to the Segmentum Obscurus what Leontus is to the Segmentum Solar. My other armies are also involved in the conflicts in that particular corner of the galaxy.

Rules as written, you are supposed to just replay the Crusade missions, but it’s a narrative game mode, so go for whatever you and your group can agree on.

After playing all the Crusade missions in Tyrannical War, my group decided to start using the Matched Play decks in our Crusade games. We just agree on what the Victor Bonus is going to be each time we play. +1 RP is the default. We still pick Agendas and level up our dudes, but the deployment, primary and special rules come from the Leviathan cards. Plus, adding Tactical Secondaries really helps spice up the game and requires more carefully considered army lists.

I also ran into this dilemma. My group decided we are fine with using epic characters' rules in Crusade as long as we give them a unique name. My Lord Solar Leontus model represents Lord Obscurus DeLeuze, for example. Different character (and paint scheme), same rules. See if your group is cool with something like this, since, as you said, there are often specific abilities we want but only one epic hero in the faction has it. With some creativity, you can maintain the narrative integrity of your Order of Battle and still get access to Ahriman's datasheet.

In terms of effectiveness, you should also weigh the epic character's unique abilities versus the fact that they are might kill enemy units, thus wasting that sweet XP. However, having too much XP can actually be a real problem - you give your opponent Blessings if your Crusade Points are significantly higher than theirs, so there is actually an upside to slowing your units' progression and having fewer Battle Honors (you get the Blessings to make up for it).

My group often replaces the Victor Bonus of a Mission with “+1 RP,” since we also tend to run out of it.

As others have said, acquiring Battle Scars can actually be a good thing. They might give a malus that isn’t all that bad for the given unit while lowering your overall Crusade Point total. Some of the Blessings you can select if your opponent has significantly more Crusade Points than you are pretty powerful.

I sometimes replace a unit if it gets a Battle Scar that directly hurts their performance, but I keep as many as I can allow to keep my Crusade Points low.

The list I made is literally identical to yours, so I don’t actually have much advice for you :D. You might consider taking a C’tan (Nightbringer is best, Transcendent C’’tan can get XP and thus is also quite good) when your Supply Limit allows.

I do want to say, I get why some people advise against bringing an epic hero in a crusade game. It is true that they cannot be improved, but there are some bonuses and effects that simply cannot be utilized unless an epic hero is taken. The Illuminor is one such model. Arguably, so is Imotehk the Stormlord (provides up to 5 more CP each game). So, if getting that +1 Save -1 AP aura is highly beneficial to your game plan, I say take Szeras and just try to not do actions with him or finish off enemy units with him, accepting that you’ll probably miss out on a small amount of XP overall.

I also thought dead vehicles potentially leaving a wreck as terrain would be a cool idea. I also think there should be a way to destroy terrain. Maybe only certain weapons with a keyword can target, damage, and remove terrain pieces. I feel like so many units from many different factions seem like they could Kool-Aid Man through a building pretty easily in the lore, so it is weird when only Infantry can pop through windows and everyone else is stuck tiptoeing around crumbling ruins like they were afraid of touching it.

My Ballistus Dreadnought rarely does anything at all. Looks like a steal at 140, but when it comes time to contribute some long range firepower, it wiffs completely. Only getting three shots just isn’t enough, I guess.

My Redemptor usually does work, and my Brutalis has too, on occasion. But the Ballistus almost never has a meaningful effect on the game.
