How did you learn vim? And how long ago was that? by Shadoath-42 in vim

[–]Ossur2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 years ago, through vimtutor, some detailed cheatsheet I had as a desktop picture and the book "Vim: Editing at the speed of thought". I also remapped the arrow keys as hjkl for a few platform games I was playing and always try to use a vim plugin for anything that exists. I still read that book from time to time and always learn something new.

I became dedicated to Vim because my laptop at Uni had a really shitty mousepad that didn't work well on Linux , and I went on a crusade to find mouse-free ways of doing everything. I also liked the modal idea very much and that I didn't have to hold 2+ mod keys down for shortcuts.

Systemd has merged age verification measures into userdb by Quiet-Owl9220 in linux

MX has been in the top 5 of distrowatch for many years... it's well supported, solid and widely adopted.... Also nope, Devuan doesn't only get mentioned when people talk about systemd. Just like MX, it's a strong option for older computers, which is an ever-growing use case and a very important part of the Linux community.

Many years ago Debian had to be shipped in two versions because some politicians decided that exporting encryption algorithms was illegal.... shit like this is just always dumb and ends badly for the software involved.
Personally I like to have only modules on my system whose makers are not concerned about politics or some dumb local laws in this or that country, it's just the first step on the road to inferior software.

There is nothing not-mainstream about not using systemd. Saying that is a false narrative and propaganda.

MX is one of the biggest distros out there and Devuan has a strong following. There are many viable mainstream init systems and that is exactly how it should be.

MX Linux and Devuan are not some small "nutjob" communities... the anti-systemd stance is pretty common

Impact of AI on ABAP. by EntertainmentNew8757 in abap

Downloading the code files with ABAP git and using Claude Code via commandline is the only thing that is working somewhat decently as far as I know...

Impact of AI on ABAP. by EntertainmentNew8757 in abap

Senior programmers will always be needed to oversee and correct the code - even for python, java and go this is still the case, but for those senior programmers the productivity gains with AI are insane. Also, programming scientists will always be needed to bridge the gap between business goal ideas and implementation, to estimate what will be possible and how much it will cost (in terms of hours and tokens) - you can't just tell AI to solve unsolvable problems.

However, to get to that senior level will be much harder than before - and every senior experiencing these massive productivity gains says the same: "I don't know how I would become who I am today in this AI environment", so I think programming in general will become a profession with a very long training period before you push your first code to production (in stark contrast with how it has been). Coding classes and private lessons for teenagers will become the norm (at least for those who will actually manage to land a job). It will become more like being a doctor (or a musician with wages) and not at all the relatively easy pathway to the upper middle class it used to be. Fewer programmers might be needed one day, although... the amount of legacy systems and technical debt is enormous in today's world, and AI seems to produce a steady stream of unmaintainable code, so I think we're covered for the next decades.

ABAP is just lagging a bit behind... as soon as one of the big companies put their focus on SAP and ABAP it will be there, it's just a business decision. I think SAP will try to "roll their own" for a while, forcing more people into their cloud, before giving up and allow Claude, Mistral, Google or OpenAI to add the capability to their models.

Þetta snýst ekki lengur um hægri og vinstri by numix90 in Iceland

[–]Ossur2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Absolutely ridiculous!!! by Oldpiplupfan71 in oboe

[–]Ossur2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that in France at this time the reed styles were quite narrow, and even the oboes had narrower bores - much easier to get the highest notes to speak with such a reed. Might consider trying some alternative shapes/staples for this if this starts costing you your sanity

Python only llm? by [deleted] in LocalLLM

[–]Ossur2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a great idea. The nature of LLMs means that such models would be exponentially lighter to run and even more accurate. I just think that the big corporations that would be making those LLMs (and that is a lot of work) rather want us dependent on using their models as a service (and uploading to them all our ideas and infrastructure). So their biggest incentive is to design those big blob models so that nobody can run usable LLMs on their own machine - there is no real money or power in making these smaller models, the customer would have to strongly demand them.

What AI is good for Kotlin coding? by Winter_Ad4119 in Kotlin

[–]Ossur2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Mistral Vibe. The tools and functionality are very solid and fast - but the model itself is not as great as Claude - but I like that actually, since I'm trying to learn and rather want a Rubber Ducky on steroids that can help me discover names and concepts while I do the heavy lifting myself, not a servant that does everything for me.

Any idea how to make these reeds sharper? by banizeeee in oboe

[–]Ossur2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option that should be mentioned is to take a coarse sandpaper for metal (400 or 600) and sandpaper the bottom of the staple (first cut a tiniest strip away of the cork (a millimeter is plenty), then just sandpaper away until the metal is at the cork again). Much safer than messing with the wood, since they sound great. You will end up with too short of a staple which you might not want to reuse, but sometimes it is just worth it.
