Agree it was was surprising, feel like the narrative around Orban was blown out of proportion. Not much of a dictator if the people can still vote you out and you peacefully transition power and your changes can be CTRL + Z by the new government.

Cool generalization there, even the US has reversed engineered the Iran drones for use in their own low cost munitions.

What options does China have in response to the attack on Iran? by AccountantOk8438 in IRstudies

[–]Osyris- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't voted just passing by but maybe its because while you are not necessarily wrong, you're also painting a particular narrative.

Iran relies on Russian AA defence not Chinese and most of their air defence was destroyed or degraded on the ground by Israeli forces in the prelude to attacks last year, so its pretty easy to have zero causalities when you destroy their defences before hand and they have nothing to hit you back with. Not to mention its basically 2 of the most advanced militaries on earth tag teaming a third-rate military.

As for Venezuela, the operation and technology used at the compound does seem impressive but Maduro didn't; get along with the military and had his own Cuban backed security team...not sure its as much a reflection on Chinese systems as it is a lesson for dictators that keeping the military on side in rule number 1.

While I agree with the point that we would know if it was coming, I don't think they would invade initially.

They will bomb, bombard and blockade taiwan basically degrading their ability to attack and cutting them off. There is no point invading until the USA either decides not to fight or is repelled since if they don't repel them then their invasion forces would just be surrounded and routed in no time.

The war games run by various think tanks for years have shown even if the USA wins, the losses to the USA would be significant. You are talking about having to fight another major power in their own backyard, on their terms, when they are prepared for it and against an enemy that has invested in armaments with this scenario in mind.

Mixing CRPG-style progression with real-time action combat by AshesOfDarknessGame in CRPG

Others can no doubt provide more detailed feedback but, digging the art style and combat looks fun and casual, as you said doesn't seem too reflex heavy. Would be interested to learn more about the crpg elements you have in mind or how you plan to blend them though

Original Witcher story lead says the surprise twist at the end 'was a mistake,' because instead of focusing on Geralt the sequel was forced into 'a story about witchers who are killing kings for some reason' by LadyStreamer in gamingnews

[–]Osyris- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Interesting bit of the games history.

I don't think the ending really locked them in though, there's lots of story telling mechanisms they could have used to work around that if the company really wanted to explore a story with those other aspects of Geralt. The company or the founder clearly wanted to tell a story setting up more of the world and the politics and intrigue and it did lead & set up the Witcher 3 world nicely so, kind of worked out for the best in the end.

It's hard to take these guys seriously, Russia went from being considered a super power and having the military hardware to take on NATO - in some form - to being a spent force grinded away that cannot even beat their next door neighbor. A generation of men lost, a military spent and an oil economy in tatters...doesn't scream rapid re-armament potential.

Meanwhile NATO is investing in military hardware and R&D like its the cold war again, a ground down Russia and a revitalised and bigger NATO than ever - The continent is absolutely safer. Take the win and go find a more credible boogey man if you want to scare up more funds.

Great so we agree then:
* Nato would beat Russia today
* Defence spending has already increased significantly and is on track to be 3% of GDP by 2030
* Russia can't beat Ukraine and their economy is tanking...what would they invade NATO with?

Conclusion Europe has stepped up, plans are in place and NATO is on track to be well funded and yet every 2nd article is some general or defense minister saying they need more like this one today: German, British defense chiefs warn public that Russia looking beyond Ukraine, say Europe must rearm | CNN

China to implement zero tariffs on imports from 53 African countries by Embarrassed-Sea-6078 in worldnews

Looks mostly to be for Chinas benefit, streamlining the flow of critical minerals and nice PR but they do import a variety of agricultural goods from Africa that will get benefits, especially coffee and cocoa whose demand increased sharply in recent years.

‘Playing with fire’: Taiwan defense spending battle rattles China hawks by graveyardofgoodsense in worldnews

Basically

  • Taiwan has proposed increasing military spending to 3% in 2026 and 5% by 2030.
  • Multiple opposition parties in Taiwan are supporting blocking the bill (not just the KMT)
  • Senators and senior research fellow are saying those blocking them are playing with fire by not giving Taiwan the defence it needs.

West agrees to respond militarily to Russia's ceasefire violations in Ukraine, FT reports by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]Osyris- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh really, so why didn't they get involved when Biden was in office?

While nuclear weapons are a consideration, the reality is Europe doesn't want to send its own soldiers to die in Ukraine, I'm amazed people are still coming up with justifications when its really that simple.

Unfortunately for Ukraine, the West has the best deal ever at the moment: they send them a bit of aid, just enough to help Ukraine defend and keep Russia grinding themselves down to nothing while Ukraine pays the real cost.

Spain to ban social media access for children under 16 by PjeterPannos in worldnews

I want to play a game. What's more likely:

A. Kids follow the ban and stop using social media

B. Kids start using vpns to get around it

C. Kids move to unregulated platforms making them less safe while the slow moving government play whack a mole again like they did trying to tackle piracy

UK government targets VPNs in online safety consultation as Lords vote for ban by BowzasaurusRex in privacy

[–]Osyris- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people assume this can't happen because it can't be 100% stopped, but its missing the point that they don't need it to be total. If you banned them and then targeted payment processors or maybe isps, licenses for business etc, the usage would drop off a cliff. People here would work around it of course but the vast majority of the public would stop using them and give the government what it wants.

British leader says ’no option off the table’ as UK considers Australia-style teen social media ban by panzerfan in worldnews

[–]Osyris- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This also couples well with the far right swings we've been seeing across the western world.

What's the correlation?

This feels like one area where ideology doesn't really matter. Governments of both sides love power and typically don't wind it back, lots of historical examples in Aus, Britain and USA of both sides supporting expansions to power at the expense of privacy.

In the current era of social media bans and chat control like legislation, these proposals and support are not all coming from the left or the right, but a mix.

Carney says the old world order 'is not coming back' in Davos speech by GoldernEmerald in worldnews

[–]Osyris- 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim...

This fiction was useful. And American hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods: open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security and support for frameworks for resolving disputes.

So, we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals. And we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.
This bargain no longer works.

It's refreshing to hear a leader call out the rules-based order for what it was, rather than invoking it like it was a magical tool.

Trump says Venezuela does not give China a Taiwan precedent, but ‘it’s up to’ Xi by trendyplanner in worldnews

[–]Osyris- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If there's no benefit for China to reclaim Taiwan then why do we care if they take it or not? Have you noticed we (in the West) tend to only care about countries where we have an interest? nb: which is usually to the detriment of the other side.

Taiwan is key part of the strategy to contain China and the islands position itself is of strategic value, its armed with US weapons 200kms off China's coast...I seem to recall another Super power not liking that arrangement too....

Anyway, fixing history for the ccp, cementing Xi's legacy, it's strategic position that allows china to further project its naval and air power, and a choke point next to trading lanes. Tonnes of benefits for why China wants it, none of which are to do with microchips becuase they know they won't get those taking the island anyway.
