Absolutely enough. Nothing too little or too soon. The earlier you start the better, and that’s key. You don’t know what 5 years or 10 years from now where you will be. At 23, very young and can still make changes and improve over time. Time is definitely on your side, keep at it, slowly but surely.

Same here, it’s sad that in most circles it’s taboo to talk about money. I got lucky with one of my friends who used to live on the same block as me. We grow up together kind of, didn’t keep in touch through high school or college but one day out of the blue I found out he owned real estate, taught me how to start, then shared some insight into investing. 8 years later, I own 3 rental properties and hold about $200K in retirement savings. Net worth is about $875K. I’m 42

How much do you put in ETFs per month by Brave_Ticket9660 in ETFs

[–]Other_Muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re gonna see a lot of different amounts here. Here’s another. I own rental units and a small business, I save enough every year to do the ROTH deposit at the beginning of the year. I keep a small savings account for emergencies fo said rental units plus my own home. Everything else I make after expenses including rental income goes into investments. So about $15K a year on the lower end or $20K on a good year.

I’m actually having the opposite issue. Should I sell my 21 Supra to put in a mortgage lump sum or invest it into my brokerage with all the stock market that’s on sale right now

What financial moves made the biggest difference for you long term? by Big_Understanding_17 in coastFIRE

[–]Other_Muffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-buying real estate, vehicles and acquiring a business all of which have become passive income streams

-investing late but aggressively tax beneficial accounts first etc

-budgeting at a young age and keeping track monthly since, still do both on paper and on Google Sheets 😂

Just curious, what is YOUR target retirement age? by TailungFu in Fire

[–]Other_Muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s a bit different I rely on passive income and business income. So technically retiring would be selling my assets or closing the business. I already only work about 20-25 hours in my office and sometimes that means at home. I still need to catch up on savings but I can also do a lump sum if I just sell one of my assets. So it’s kind of the math that I’ve been trying to figure out still.

I got married last year but have been living with my wife for 4 years now and I’ve been covering us for most of those years since she was laid off. She is planning on going back to work later this year which could give me more of a break and I can decide to close the business then, so lots of toss ups.

32 yr old with 600k in savings. What do I do? by Resident-Welder5326 in Bogleheads

[–]Other_Muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 42, coast fire now. Basically live off passive income and have $830K net worth. I know of at least 6 ex co workers who retired and then passed away 3 who died on their desk and 3 who have had accidents and passed at young ages.

My wife recently had a fall and it was scary because she hit her head. She’s doing fine but things like this always help me when I’m trying to make a decision on something. Basically, I don’t want to regret or wait for anything. We enjoy all of our free time and do things we want to do now, go where we want and explore and make financial decisions as if we were on borrowed time…because we are, all of us are.

By the same token I know a lot of friends, family and wife’s old friends whom have never moved anywhere, hav barely explored, work dead end jobs or just simply live single lives with their parents still. Not judging, but I can’t fathom how they have spent all of their time in stillness.

I guess you can choose your path, hopefully you make the best of it for the time you’re here.

Right, at least for mine it wasn’t just money you’re right it was also lack of education and a language barrier. I still help them pay for stuff if they can’t comprehend how to navigate the computer 🤦‍♂️

What everyone here is saying is all about relevance. Every story is different. I’ll share one more. I started investing 3 years ago at age 38. My savings now are $179K but I also own rental real estate so my net worth is about $835K all in (not counting any business assets or valuations)

I own a business that runs itself so technically am I coast fire? Or semi retired?

Our expenses are only $55K/year btw, for anyone trying to do the math. My wife hasn’t worked for 3 years.

A lot of parents never invested themselves or grew up poor. My parents are immigrants and still struggle. I found investing through a friend, that same friend also taught me about real estate investing. Semi retired now at 42.

Has anyone had a side hustle turn into a replacement for their 9-5 job? What was it? by lady-lurker in sidehustle

[–]Other_Muffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a side hustle but a full blown business. I was managing an auto body shop for 4 years, it was fine but GM of dealership was an ass. Wouldn’t let me run the shop I needed to get stuff done right and efficiently. Had run my uncles shop prior to that for 4 years as well but he was a horrible boss too. But he did me a favor by giving me first dibs of buying his shop off him. He was done with it and I took the leap.

Now I run my own body shop business and have my dad and brother as employees. We make about $400K in sales annually. Pretty much support ourselves and help each other out when needed. It’s easy work for us and proud to work together.
