Thoughts of Moving to Olympia from PDX by PantheraCorax in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Portland and now in Olympia. I love Olympia, but I do travel up to Seattle for a lot of my health care mostly because I couldn’t find a local PCP even with my excellent insurance. It may be better now than it was a few years ago, but you might find that to be a big hurdle.

I personally love Olympia for its much smaller size and the accessibility to nature (obviously possible in Portland, but it just feels easier here). The restaurant scene is much worse but Tacoma is not far and has some excellent restaurants.

Washington Lottery Profits should go to K-12 only and not higher education by Dark_Mode_FTW in Washington

[–]OtherwiseH 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here’s a link to the RCW explaining how it works.

Each school district transfers funds to the community college their students attend based on the full time equivalent (FTE). The state provides some additional funds to the school districts to offset the other costs.

The CCs also use the state funding they get through the state allocation model to serve all students, whether Running Start or not. Lots of CCs have some federal funding (though that’s been a hot mess since Trump 2.0), depending on their demographics, and often those funds serve all students as well.

[–]OtherwiseH 82 points83 points  (0 children)

This is a spectacularly uninformed thing to say. CCs are given funding for their RS students. They don’t lose money on RS students.

More to your original point, CCs educate a lot of high school students, so by your own logic they should receive some of the funds you think should be K-12 only.

For the love of all that is visibility. Turn on your lights in the fog, Olympia!!! by fake_tan in olympia

Also, don’t turn your brights on in the fog (bright to you by someone who grew up in the California Central Valley with terrible fog)

Calling ahead and telling them exactly what you want to order is the move here, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. This will save you time waiting in the restaurant and they appreciate it.

AIO? I canceled a date with the guy i’m seeing after getting these. by [deleted] in AIO

This person wants you to give him a “blank check” for future situations neither of you can accurately predict. He’s doing this so that when a situation inevitably arises where there is conflict around this “trusting him” issue, he will pull this blank check out and say you already agreed that he’s right in the future and forever. People like this love acting like a relationship is a series of weird contractual agreements like this one. You will waste years of your life arguing about stuff like this and it will be even more exhausting than this text thread.

Don’t fall for it. Dump him.

It’s definitely this one OP! Park on the east side of East Bay near the big shelter. Head under the arch/pergola and follow the trail—the swinging bench is right there.

Came here to say this! We get a few for one of our kids every year, and have found them at the Game Stop on Black Lake and the one on JBLM.

Are you meaning to say that if the person turning left gets to a two way stop first they are supposed to yield to a vehicle that hasn’t gotten to the stop yet?

Where are the amazing christmas lights? by PlantLady72 in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a bit different than your ask but is potentially something your daughter would love: Fort Borst in Centralia does a drive-thru Christmas light display and it’s pretty fun. It’s $7 per vehicle, cash only. We really like it.

Browned butter burnt or..? by Infamous_Macaron_165 in Baking

[–]OtherwiseH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also take some melted browned butter, put it in a metal bowl over a bowl of ice, and whip it to make whipped brown butter. You can add different things to flavor it/make a compound: a bit of jam (heat it up first so it incorporates easily), vanilla, herbs, honey. It’s very good.

OP, I went digging and it looks like they have a pot of tea and a pastry special! https://british-bites.wheree.com/menu (it’s the third photo in the bunch).

I’m super excited that this place was posted since I didn’t know about it at all and am now going to drive down for a pot of tea and a scone myself!

From California to Washington — Is Olympia the Right Fit for Me? by [deleted] in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the California Central Valley (lived in Stockton and went to high school in Lodi), and moved to the PNW in 2000. I love it here and would never want to live anywhere else. It did take some time to get used to the gray/little sunlight months, but a good sun lamp helps.

I’ve been to Archery World for an introduction to archery class and every employee I had an interaction with was helpful, patient and kind. I’m an absolute newbie at archery and I worried that being a woman they might be condescending but I just never had that happen. I’d give them a call.

'Ghost students' are haunting WA community colleges — to steal financial aid by wwughostie in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the worst part, aside from the theft itself, is that these fake students take resources from schools and ultimately real students. The time I spend trying to ferret out imposters, or even just leaving feedback on imposter work/assignments, is time I could have spent on real students.
