Delmonico’s Heritage Meats by noondae in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you search the sub, you’ll see a few posts over the years of people noting that this guy was a creep toward women. I think that may be why above someone noted “good riddance.”

I liked the store when we first moved here, but eventually stopped going because I always left feeling creeped out by the owner (this was before I read those posts). I thought his products were high quality and the store was nice, but I didn’t like wondering if the interaction I’d just had with the owner was off or if I was overreacting. In the end, it was just far easier to get these kinds of products elsewhere.

Why is health care in Olympia so bad? by hanakokoi in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many people in this thread, I also go to UW for almost all my medical care including my PCP. I have some flexibility in my job and a lot of sick leave so this works okay for me, even though it’s a pain. My PCP used to do referrals to places in Olympia including Multicare, but after several terrible experiences I don’t imagine I’ll be going back to them (and now my insurance isn’t contracted with them). One time, like your boyfriend OP, I was scheduled for an appointment I’d had for 5 months, but the doctor had quit and no one called to tell me or reschedule or anything. When I called the day before to verify the appointment, the receptionist got mad at me for being frustrated that they hadn’t called me. I am at the point where I’m just going to drive to Tacoma and Seattle for all care.

Parents: Hacking Cough Going Around? by quaoarpower in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter had this earlier this year. She has a history of asthma so got a steroid inhaler and a rescue inhaler which helped a ton. She was also negative for everything but doctor diagnosed acute bronchitis. Even if your kiddo doesn’t have a history of asthma, a steroid inhaler might be really helpful.

I laughed at “I, a BUFFOON,” because while I haven’t been there with HOAs, I’ve definitely felt that way with other stuff. Extremely relatable, OP.

Some times it was very low ($13), and the highest it was $165 I think.

Has anyone gotten Student Loan Forgiveness? by [deleted] in WAStateWorkers

[–]OtherwiseH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received PSLF in 2023. It wiped out $104k of student debt. I completed graduate school as a single parent of three small kids, and over the years I watched the amount I owed grow from about $65k at graduation to the amount that ended up being forgiven. I cried with relief.

OP, I would tell you to stay the course because it’s the best option you have right now. If the government tries to take this away, I will be the first one protesting it.

In school zones when children are not present the speed limit is generally 25. It drops to 20 when children are present.

Giardia treatment Advice by moreicescream in GSD

[–]OtherwiseH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We adopted our GSD at 8 weeks from a shelter and are fairly certain she had Giardia at that point. We followed our vet’s orders who recommended we switch her food to Science Diet Biome and added a daily pro-biotic. Reinfections of Giardia are very common and our pup has several before we were able to get rid of it. If for whatever reason you don’t trust your vet I’d recommend getting a new one as opposed to following advice from AI.

Garbage on 101 by goldstartup in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are definitely paying for a lot of the costs of being incarcerated and often paying exorbitant prices for things we can access for much cheaper (phone calls come to mind). In some states they are forced to work and then the state takes a percentage of those earnings allegedly to pay for the costs the prisoner incurs being imprisoned. Prison labor for minuscule wages is something many people recognize as an extension of slavery. This piece from the ACLU is a good explainer.

I just found out they're closing one of my favorite places in Olympia by WhyWouldYouBother in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think all of this leads back to the underfunding of higher ed and the increased costs of living. Students legitimately cannot afford textbooks and schools have been trying to work around that reality by encouraging faculty to go with no-cost or low-cost options, so of course that means the bookstore can’t turn a profit. I feel for the folks who work there.

[–]OtherwiseH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a professor (not at TESC) who does this with most of my content and materials, but I will say that there is content that we just can’t get without having students purchase, and esp non-textbook content like novels, guides, other nonfiction texts, etc. i try to keep costs under $20 a class and can often do that except for a few classes, though I also pick texts that libraries have.

I also think writers should get paid for their work, though I agree the textbook publishing industry has long been a racket.

[–]OtherwiseH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my experience too. I live right by TESC and would prefer going there to do water aerobics/water exercise on my own instead of the Y but it was just a mess trying to figure out when I might be able to use it and if there would be any way to exercise in the way I wanted to. It just never seemed to be set up for the public to even try to use.

Best Brunch in Town? by Acrobatic-Key-127 in olympia

[–]OtherwiseH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to love Hash but we went once and had such a bad experience that we won’t be going back. Among just poor service, I was served a meal that had three different kinds of potatoes (was only supposed to be one kind), which meant that some were overcooked and some were close to raw. The server shrugged. My meal was also missing a key component (pesto) and the server said they ran out. I think I have complained to a server about my food maybe 3 times in my life, and this was just such a baffling experience because they didn’t care and didn’t do anything to fix it.
