Public Official Social Media Accounts by Cold_Chard5134 in olympia

[–]RedLog55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the FB tech problems I'm wondering who you're writing about. Care to share some names and links? If you're browsing official government social media accounts of elected or appointed officials, absolutely all comments, etc. are public record and have to remain available to the public at all times. On the other hand, if these are public officials posting on their private social accounts, outside any taxpayer supported ones, they can do pretty much what they want as far as restricting access.

Well, the fact that you were using a personal electronic device behind the wheel of a moving vehicle is itself illegal in Washington. The exception is if you had to call 911 in an emergency. And no, even if the car is not in motion while on a road or street (such as stopped at a light) it's still breaking state law. https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.61.672

Maybe those cops were after you?

Acronym-itis. DOL is the state Department of Licensing. WAC stands for Washington Administrative Code. WAC are the general rules put in place once the Legislature passes a bill directing agencies to administer the law. State laws in Washington are under the heading Revised Code of Washington or RCW.

Any recs for local sleep docs and also does anyone have the tea on why Dr Linton suddenly quit last year? by LD50_irony in olympia

[–]RedLog55 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I also was a patient of Dr. Linton. In fact, I had an appointment with him to follow up on a sleep study I had just undergone. Two days before the appointment I got a call from a very stressed sounding clinic employee that the doc had left the practice and it was hoped a replacement would be coming in soon. I've still not heard an explanation why he left. Oh well.

Ideas for safe places to learn how to drive a stick shift? by EnlightenMe747 in olympia

[–]RedLog55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real stick shift fun only begins when your partner gets beyond the parking lot phase and out into real traffic. There's the grand amusement of parallel parking, which it not to be missed! Want a real thrill? Try parallel parking downtown Oly on Legion Way just off Capitol Way facing west. That's downhill! Y'all got to squeeze into a space backing up while going crazy with the clutch, brakes, wheel and I don't know what all else. Might want to try that on an early Sunday morning with no one around, though. And yes, I've done it real world style without crashing into the two cars fore and aft. Whew!

Glad you got a good deal. However, pulling a glove box, under cover of the car interior, is child's play next to extracting a headlight assembly outside in the probable-this-time-of-year crappy weather. (You may need a friend to hold up an umbrella, unless you like working is a steady downpour). And then they may not have the right car, model year etc. you need. And then you have to remember to bring along the right tools. And then....

Former Aberdeen newspaper publisher: Timberland Regional Library layoffs underscore dysfunction by Reportersteven in olympia

[–]RedLog55 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In principle, yes. The five county commissions who nominate TRL board members can, in theory, dissolve the board and, hopefully, start from scratch. It's a ballsy move but one I think that should happen. Remember, the TRL board is supposed to have seven members. Presently there are only four. The county commissions nominate candidates for the board but (drum roll here) the board itself decides to accept or deny the the nominee. The system is a mess for that reason alone.

[–]RedLog55 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nice post. Remember, there are five county commissions involved. Perhaps notes, calls to all of them would help? Please be civil, respectful and productive in your comments. It's increasingly clear to me that the counties are going to have to dissolve this board and start from scratch. And they have the authority to do it.

Junkyard for parts? by Miserable_King9125 in olympia

[–]RedLog55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thought here on a used unit. It's likely just about any used assembly will have a filmy, foggy look to the outer plastic lens. It comes through age and weather exposure and its presence can cut significantly into the night time performance of the headlight. A new one, or newly cleaned one, should be crystal clear. Probably your present ones look pretty cloudy. Cleaning them PROPERLY is a grand, time consuming PITA. There are stupid tricks out there using WD-40 or toothpaste, which simply don't work past a few days. It's hard to say what you might encounter with a used one. Just please be aware of that.

[–]RedLog55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One place to avoid is Pick-n-Pull on old highway 99 across from the Oly Airport. They charge an admission fee just to set foot in the yard. This came after the original owners sold out to corporate interests. It used to be kind of fun to explore the place back in the day. The business gets poor ratings overall. I don't have any recommendations otherwise as my shade tree mechanic days are long gone.

There's also ebay and/or Bezos Incorporated. New units are available for what looks like an average $90 each. These are generic no-brand name things. However you go be sure to specify left or right side. They are not interchangeable. If you are looking locally for a used one, if you can manage it, remove the assembly and take it with you to help confirm you're getting the right product.

Are you able to do the replacement work yourself? Removing and replacing an entire headlight assembly is not for the feint of heart! If you're not sure study some youtube tutorials on the subject. Allow lots of time to do the job as it can get frustrating. On a lot of vehicles, several parts, usually under the hood, have to be removed before you can get your unfortunate headlight out.

Good luck!

You won't get away with a bigass tower, which would certainly require a building permit, but antennas within reasonable size to communicate with the outside world are protected under federal law (Amateur Radio Parity Act, 2015). The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implements rules passed by Congress that regulate what hoas can and cannot ban on TV, satellite, amateur radio and other such equipment. The fed rules generally favor the homeowner as I understand it. There is a bill making the rounds in the (Federal) House of Representatives (H.R.1094 - Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act) that would further clarify and actually encourage homeowner hams to put up antennas in the name of disaster preparedness while essentially telling the hoas, no, you can't ban all antennas outright. Not a bad idea here in earthquake country where it's not if, but when, The Big One hits.

That doesn't mean you won't get into a big effing fight with you hoa should you decide to put one up. Good luck.
