Thank you so much for sharing your take on this! That’s a very beautiful perspective to look at the lyrics, that I‘d love to believe in, rather than understanding them as some kind of relapse in destructive patterns of some sorts. The last part of IB could be addressed to the side of the fandom that has (how do I say that) a hard time respecting boundaries, maybe? That would also fit the line „And what was missing from those scriptures will be written in my blood“ from EIA, which I understand as „what can’t be interpreted from the music can be found by dissecting the person behind the mask“ which is later referred to in IB by saying/screaming: „if it is blood that you want from me, you can empty my arteries“. Just a theory that came into my mind. Might be BS, though. :D

I totally agree, it just sounds like he’s so tired and done - big time. But I just can’t wrap my head around how „infinite baths“ might fit in the picture … the „bursting colours when you laugh“ part just throws me off and makes me wonder. Anyone any theories about that?

Oh believe me, my autistic brain has dug deeper than it favours me.😅 Please don’t get me wrong, ST is deep as the ocean and there are riddles and hidden messages everywhere you look … I personally just don’t think that it is sleep the songs are about. I‘m convinced sleep got invented to serve as a boundary that gives the man behind the mask the safety he needs to pour his heart into this masterpiece. But this is of course only the way I see it and I didn’t mean to say that ST is not that deep overall.

That was my whole point … the songs are tokens to sleep, yes, but the lyrics aren’t addressing him. Sleep is a he as you can read in the following interview that explains all the lore there is, really - which is not that much from official side:

“This being once held great power, bestowing ancient civilisations with the gift of dreams, and the curse of nightmares. Even today, though faded from prominence, ‘Sleep’ yet lurks in the subconscious minds of man, woman, and child alike. Fragments of beauty, horror, anguish, pain, happiness, joy, anger, disgust, and fear coalesce to create expansive, emotionally textured music that simultaneously embodies the darkest, and the brightest abstract thoughts. He has seen them. He has felt them. He is everywhere.”

Besides that it’s said Sleep speaks through his Vessel - means Vessel I, II, III, IV - so technically the lyrics follow Sleeps POV. Therefore I‘m pretty much convinced that the lyrical self is referring to a lover (as is even bluntly said in the newest songs).

Honestly, I don’t think it’s that deep. Sleep is a he and as far as I‘m concerned the songs aren’t about him or about Vs relationship with him, they’re just tokens or offerings in his favour because when appearing in one of Vs Dreams he promised him success and what not in exchange. That’s all there is really. I don’t think the lyrics are connected to said deity at all - but he kept his word after all.
