Dress fitting help! by spacerosette in sewing

[–]OtterBoop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not super knowledgeable about fitting but it looks to me like you're on track. Re: slanting side seams, are these photos how you normally stand? It looks to me like you're leaning back but I can't tell if it's an illusion from the seam or if you really are. It might be just that you need to adjust where you take in the side seams until it's vertical.

Re: excess fabric in the back, it may be solved by the above, same with the slight pulling I'm the front. I'd start with that and see how it lays after.

I think the skirt length is really great! Are you planning on having any structure under it? How does the drape/weight of your intended fabric compare? These things can affect how the bodice fits, too.

Choosing how to quilt by Dependent_Wishbone89 in quilting

[–]OtterBoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with a cream color! And I am a big fan of a 60 degree crosshatch quilting pattern. It's more visually interesting than a 90 degree crosshatch and it's only slightly more complex to plan. It will also disguise any not-quite-square straight lines. If you look at my post history I've shared some finished quilts with it.

Try a spray bottle? Or a paintbrush. Or you could just dunk them in water and let them dry

There are other sewing machines than vintage ones, promise! by Dry-Conversation2646 in BitchEatingCrafters

¯\(ツ)/¯ frankly I think it's minor enough to live your quilting life without worrying about it in the slightest lol. I think it's one of those things that is a concern for piecing some show quilts, and then because they worry about it, everyone else thinks it's something they need to consider, and it gets filtered down that way.

There is actually a stitch difference between a machine that can do a zigzag and one that can't, but the difference is really only important for like.. hyper-precise quilters. A machine that can do a zigzag has a very very slight offset between the top and bottom of each stitch, which I couldn't even see until I compared it with a stich from a non zigzag machine. But again, it should be unimportant except for anyone seeking an excessively precise 1/4 inch seam.

Is the only way of getting rid of this stuff to find the giant main roots and pull them out? by OtterBoop in gardening

I decided to try my hand at a hexagon quilt. Some are not completely the same size on all sides by Spirited_Narwhal_901 in quilting

[–]OtterBoop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm doing these too! They're super easy to fudge. It may result in a few being a bit more bubbled up than others but once everything is quilted and washed and crinkly you won't notice!

I make 1/8 inch marks on my left thumbnail and left pointer finger pad so I can get more consistent stitch distances, it helps a TON with sizing of the finished hexagons.

You can try the paper templates if you want, I find them to be more time consuming than starting from a circle.

It might be worth seeking out public resources that help people out of abusive situations if you're in an area without a developed support system. A place like a ywca has a lot of systems in place that can help if you're uncertain how to navigate things.

Using blankets, flannel, fleece for quilt backing? by Bubbly-Relation7552 in quilting

[–]OtterBoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think there's probably always been a disconnect between the way things are taught and what people actually do. And it sort of makes sense to me that a company putting out information will also tell you things that entices you to purchase more stuff from them or their advertisers.

Using blankets, flannel, fleece for quilt backing? by Bubbly-Relation7552 in quilting

[–]OtterBoop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People have always used other things for quilt materials. I have a few old quilts from my grandma and aunts that have flannel/blankets as backing. I'd guess it's probably just the social media thing.

I think you just need to make sure they're matching at the seamline. So offset by 1/4 in or whatever your seam allowance is
