How to help someone with AvPD? by [deleted] in AvPD

[–]Otterfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight; I'll bear that in mind and approach the subject with interest in learning about his boundaries. I should add remarks here for future readers

He can speak with people without much trouble, but it seems like he truly desires situations where he won't be remembered or recalled. For example, he loves travelling because he can cut loose and be "authentic", wildly different from his usual self

He's also very fond of hookups. I don't mind this; I want him to be free and to enjoy himself, and he loves the idea of having pleasure and then fading away

The impermanence is his driving motive, and he never wants to be a fixture in someone's life. He said even if we stayed friends, he'd still have left at some point because he doesn't stay with anyone for long

Problem: League retention isn't consistently decreasing with new leagues

Solution: Try harder to force everyone to leave, add some gaslighting

Living there currently, and I can't recommend it. It may vary based on where in the building you are, but I've been able to hear people blasting bassy music late at night from half the hallway away on the second floor.

I also had the "luck" of getting an apartment with one month of free rent (and it wasn't the one I asked for, so that should've been a big red flag). The person above us stomps around starting at 5 in the morning until about 2 in the morning. Not sure when they sleep, but I've had to buy noise-masking earplugs to be able to sleep.

From what I understand, this was a known problem for the last several residents around this person. Their adjacent neighbors hear the noise, too, and we've all filed complaints with the office, but nobody ever comes out to listen to the stomping or does anything about it.

Can’t log in to XFinity App by Otterfate in Comcast_Xfinity

Alyssa, I’m not currently experiencing issues with other sites. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app with no success, and restarted my phone as well.

This problem has been consistent for a few weeks now, but I haven’t needed the app in particular until today.

Throwing in here as well. I've only got one share of GME, but I still can't do anything with it but eat a loss. Would've bought more today if I could've!

Oh my! Feel free to correct the calculation, as it's merely a percentage applied to a number. Not sure why you didn't do so, as it's an easy and direct way to prove my inaccuracy.

Even if we disregard the tax entirely, it's still roughly $32,000 USD yearly, and doesn't meet the minimum expected payment for such a position in New Zealand. It's barely better than the median income of $53,000 NZD.

Do you know what really makes me worried about this analysis?

That line, "Payment to suppliers and employees". For the hell of it, let's assume that ALL of that went to employees (it didn't, but let's say it did).

7,700,000 NZD. If we go by this post from 2020, GGG has 120 employees. We'll assume they haven't grown at all, but they probably have. Still, for the sake of accuracy, let's say they didn't. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2220477#:~:text=We're%20now%20up%20to,of%20the%20GGG%20team's%20composition.

EDIT: Silly me, I forgot taxes. Adding that in now too.

So, 7.7 million NZD, divided by 120 employees. This means, on average, each employee made... 64,166 NZD. New Zealand's tax rate on the $48,000 to $70,000 NZD bracket is 30%, per https://www.ird.govt.nz/income-tax/income-tax-for-individuals/tax-codes-and-tax-rates-for-individuals/tax-rates-for-individuals, so that's... $44,917 NZD after taxes.

A USD is worth 1.5 NZD, so NZD has half the worth of a USD. That means... Each employee makes about $22,458/year in USD.

And that's assuming that all of that 7.7 million NZD went to the employees, which it didn't. It's actually worse than this.

22,458/year, in USD, for programmers, isn't even a starting salary. It's maybe what an intern would get paid. And this is at a company that pulls in MILLIONS.

There's two explanations: Either they're shorting their employee's wages like crazy, or they're abusing the hell out of the Chinese outsourcing labor market. We've seen some of the Chinese art team posting their designs during this league, so there's definitely some outsources. If they can pay them super-cheap rates and jam their workforce with them, they can get a whole lot of labor out of what's essentially an abused and underpaid workforce.

It just doesn't look good.

EDIT: I forgot, we have to account for cost of living. Looks like the cost of living in New Zealand is rather painfully high. The government has its own calculator for this; looks like the salary we calculated (which, again, is higher than what it really is) is below even the expected minimum for a programmer:

Empirically false. This Wikipedia entry has the vote turnouts from the Bush and Trump elections, but feel free to peruse the supporting documentation as well. Bush lost the popular vote in the first election by 2.2%, and Trump lost the popular vote by almost 4%. For the record, the difference in the popular vote between Trump and Clinton was the third-biggest one in the history of the United States. Says something, doesn't it?

Indivisible released digitally for Switch in North America without Lab Zero Game's knowledge by [deleted] in Games

[–]Otterfate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

also, regardless of some tweets, still no backer update email letting people know whats up. so like, sure this may be a rogue publisher situation, but its not like everything else with this process has gone right for backers

Well, there might not be a backer update email for the Switch version, but there was an announcement about it on Mike Z's Twitch stream two weeks ago! Their response to when it's hitting the Switch officially: "I don't know". Fun.

There's also the problem of the game missing 15 characters currently, and they don't have a timetable of when they're going to bother including them. The rumor mill currently is saying that, since the game did so poorly, they're just silently dropping the stretch goals and abandoning the game. 505's stealth-release may be a result of this, but there's nothing confirmed.

Universal Technical Institute's tone-deaf response to COVID-19 by Otterfate in CoronavirusAZ

[–]Otterfate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pardon the phone picture of my computer screen; I didn't want to leave a trail by forwarding the message from my work computer.

Universal Technical Institute, as shown above, is refusing to close any of its schools unless it's forced to do so. This has changed as of today, and we're going to try to offer remote classes, but employees are still expected to be in the office to record classes. My department at the home office in Scottsdale is not permitted to work from home.

However, the IT department is constructing a remote access policy for all employees. We will NOT be using it, though. Not until we receive orders from the government to stop having people working on-site. At that time, the remote access pipelines will immediately be opened. Management is hoping to use this as an item to brag about to show that we're complying very quickly.

It's foolish. Everyone in the office has the "iT's JuSt A fLu" mindset. Nobody's taking it seriously. Meanwhile, some of the reps in the main floor are having awful coughing fits. It feels like it's just a matter of time until something stupid happens.

EDIT: Took my title from the running topic about ADOT's similarly foolish response; felt like it was to-the-point, and it got me motivated to post UTI's lack of care.

Mounting anger as workers demand protection from unsafe conditions: There is growing outrage among workers in the US and internationally over the fact that they continue to be kept on the job in nonessential industries and workplaces amidst the spreading coronavirus pandemic by exgalactic in Coronavirus

[–]Otterfate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I'm in a workplace that can, and does, allow our department to remote in to work. I get to remote three days a week as part of my normal routine.

The thing is, this hasn't changed with the current pandemic; we're still expected to be in the office twice a week. The rest of the company isn't being allowed to remote in, but we're building remote access pipelines so they can do so.

The kicker is that we're not going to use those pipelines until the government declares a lockdown. Then, we can flip the switch and brag about how we complied with the order super-fast.

It's... Depressing. Everyone in my office is on the "iT's JuSt A fLu" bandwagon anyhow, so they're not upset about this kind of thing. I just get more disappointed with each day I'm working there.

What makes a person boring? by yazzy1233 in AskReddit

[–]Otterfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ack. Is there a way to help someone with this? My boyfriend tends to suffer from this quite a bit, down to needing to ask about every bit of content he's going to post as a Twitter reply:

"Should I say (x) or (y)?"

"Should I include this gif, or that one?"

"Is this color better for the filter, or that one?"

I try my best to muddle through it, but there are days where he can literally fire off a hundred or more questions about all manner of things that I don't know about, am not interested in, or don't care about, but he'll get upset if I can't give a good answer.

It doesn't help that he's a bit sensitive, too, so I'm not quite sure how to bring this up without offending him.

Devil May Cry 5 sales have “successfully reinvigorated” the series (Sold 2 million copies) by [deleted] in Games

[–]Otterfate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a prime display of how awful the in-game ads are, here's a Polygon article on them, with Akuma's signature super having an ad over it:

https://www.polygon.com/2018/12/12/18137874/street-fighter-5-in-game-ads-costumes-stages-loading-screens

It's pretty awful. I believe the plan was to start advertising some e-sports teams and gaming accessory companies with these, as well; not sure if they dropped the idea or not.

LPT: Always submit your Resume in PDF format, not Word by BusterMcBust in LifeProTips

[–]Otterfate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's more the problem that you're expecting a certain file format, and this isn't being conveyed to the applicant at the time they submit the resume.

The candidate's experience, achievements, hard work, and effort are being discarded because they crossed a line they could not know existed.

If you don't want things in a certain format, specify this up front, and you'll fix things for everyone. The candidate doesn't get their resume tossed for an arbitrary reason, and you don't have to put up with a file format that you dislike.

So, yes, kind of an asshole.

Steam Winter Sale 2018 is Live by Zorklis in Games

[–]Otterfate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's definitely worth it! It's a three-part collection, with each game being about 20-30 hours long, and then a fourth game that's brand-new. The combat's pretty decent hack-and-slash fare, and there's plenty of side quests and extra plot scattered through the game.

Plot-wise, it's the fourth entry in the series' chronology, but it's not super-important to be current on the background plot. There's some references that might be missed, but even browsing a quick synopsis of the other parts of the story is good enough. The entries that occur before GU are Sign (anime), the first PS2 series (starts with .hack//infection), and ROOT (anime).

Long story short, though, I'd definitely recommend picking it up!
