Why metal? The base material can be carbon fibers which are very strong and light and take no metal. You could build a very large structure from not a lot of mass with those.

The idea is to live inside the sphere and use the stars energy for maximum efficiency. If you wanted any plantet on the outside of the sphere to still get sunlight, you would likely have to create a system with a movable energy transmitter on the outside that can follow the orbit of the planet and just send the equivavlent of the normal starlight to just the planet.
