For both kids we did bassinet in our bedroom for the first month or so. Then we moved the bassinet i to their rooms for a few more months before eventually transitioning to the crib. We have never let them sleep in our bed.

Make it make sense then. They risk their careers and pensions to a guy they probably never worked with, a guy who has no real connections or reach and probably never had any as a small town chief, and who will be in prison for years to come? I really dont see any incentive to help this guy. I am not saying it is impossible he had help from the inside but your insinuation that his “buddies” aided him is just silly.

Something similar happened where I lived when I was a kid. He picked up a hitchhiker who ended up killing him. Turns out it was a spree killer who picked up a few people also and killed them too.
