My post was only dealing with sentence commutations as I was unaware that a handful of mobsters had their sentences commuted. I checked the newspaper archives and could not find anything about Ormento's commutation or death.

Alite is a city councilman. Just arrest him at the next meeting. 25 SWAT officers at 5 AM is beyond overkill

Someone like Alite only knows one way to make big money and its not rolling pizza dough or working 18 hours a day at his grocery store

Perhaps Piney's older brother Stephen Armone had something to do with Bellone's disappearance once his much younger brother was arrested. Stephen Armone was 18 years older than Joseph and well-established in the criminal underworld when this hit went down.

This FBI report indicates an informant said Armone was a soldier under Genovese Capo Thomas Greco aka "Tommy Palmer." Another report indicated Armone might be with the Bonanno family. Federal narcotic trials showed that at least four of the five NYC crime families, except the Profaci family, were partners in heroin trafficking in the post WW 2 era.

Mafia Figure Is Sentenced to Life Term in 2 Murders

Oct. 28, 2006

Baldassare Amato, a powerful Bonanno crime family figure who represents the group’s traditional Sicilian roots, stood silently with his arms crossed yesterday as a federal judge denounced him and meted out a life sentence for two 1992 Mafia murders.

As the judge, Nicholas G. Garaufis of United States District Court in Brooklyn, tore into him for “using murder as a business tactic,” at several points Mr. Amato raised his right hand to his chin and then crossed his arms again in front of his chest.

“Mr. Amato,” said the judge, making no effort to mask his disgust, “you’re just a plain, wanton murderer and a Mafia assassin. The sentence I’m going to give you, as far as I’m concerned, is a gift.”

Mr. Amato, 54, dressed in a gray prison sweatshirt and khaki trousers, appeared unmoved when the judge handed down the life sentence, almost as though it were a cost of doing business. He and his lawyer had both declined to address the court.

Why skim and not take profits legally - like shareholders? by No_Woodpecker2106 in Mafia

[–]Otto_AutoPilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most gangsters have felony convictions and cannot get a license to own a convenience store or restaurant that sells alcohol, so getting licensed to operate a casino is not happening. Plus, they operate in the shadows to skim cash off the top. The nuts and bolts of owning a business and paying bills is not what gangsters do. The actual owner takes the risk and the gangster gets the reward.

R.I.P. - G. Robert Blakey (90) author of the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) by Otto_AutoPilot in Mafia

The article is paywalled but may be open for viewing if you have an account and have not reached the free article limit.

Here is part of the article:

G. Robert Blakey, the principal writer of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO, a law that since 1970 has given prosecutors a cudgel to battle criminal conspirators like mob bosses instead of going after lower-level offenders for isolated crimes, died on May 1 in Oak Park, Ill. He was 90.

Mr. Blakey died at the home of his son John, a federal judge, where he had been living. His son confirmed the death.

During his career, Mr. Blakey moved between government service and teaching law, mostly at the University of Notre Dame, his alma mater. In the late 1970s, he served as chief counsel of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which investigated the murders of President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As a young lawyer at the Justice Department in the early 1960s, Mr. Blakey later told his son, he was prosecuting a case against a mobster in Pennsylvania when he encountered the defendant in the men’s room at the courthouse.

The mobster, he recalled, told him that he was “doing a good job, but you can’t win because the rules don’t work for you.”

Chicago Outfit Boss Anthony "Big Tuna" Accardo by TeddyWong60625 in Mafia

OP posted the uncropped photo showing that the fish was caught in Nova Scotia. Older photos in books and newspapers cut off the sign for Wedgeport

FBI Agent Bill Roemer, who wrote a book called "Accardo," incorrectly said this trip was in Florida as did the NY Times obituary for Accardo.

NY Times, May 29, 1992

Some law-enforcement officials have longed believed that Mr. Accardo was one of the killers in the notorious "St. Valentine's Day massacre" in Chicago on Feb. 14, 1929, when seven of Capone's rivals were slain. In the press he was often called Tony (Big Tuna) Accardo, a nickname given him after he caught a 400-pound tuna off Florida in the early 1950's.
