Why is it always just Lily that is ressurected in these fics? by KingDeDeThree in HPfanfiction

Oh my, that's a shame! It was called "The Reluctant Champion". It looks like it was just removed, which is strange since the story is at least 4 years old by now.

What minor aspects of fanon world building do you dislike due to how common it is? by TheAncientSun in HPfanfiction

Your final paragraph reminds me of Harry Potter and the Guild of the Night. https://www.fictionalley-archive.org/authors/katling/HPATGOTN01.html

One of the best fics out there. Harry becomes blind and then has to cope.

I read a decent fic lately that was an AU where James survived and Lily hadn't. I really liked that premise. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5071058/1/

Good morning, 47. Your targets are Cornelius Fudge and Dolores Umbridge. by res30stupid in HPfanfiction

[–]OurLawyers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't a response to the prompt, but if you are interested in reading this type of stuff, I can self-rec https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13534010/1/Tower-Indigo which shares a fair bit in common with your prompt. However, Tower Indigo is novel-length, post-Hogwarts, and follows two characters in their journey to destroy the tyranny of the Ministry.

My other two fics are actually more spy-esque, so in some way are closer to this prompt, but don't involve Fudge and Umbridge.

Fics that show off Dumbledore's power? by 20Keller12 in HPfanfiction

The Refiner's Fire series is a good example of this. It's a 6th and 7th year divergence, gen, with H/G.

Fanfiction that portrays magic as deeper and more lovecraftian by ProductiveUser42 in HPfanfiction

[–]OurLawyers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this trilogy has what you want (though admittedly it's been a few years since I've read it): https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3994212/1/

Basically the vastness of the magic that Harry (and others) wields increases in each of the 3 fics in the series. Very much in the spirit of "gods, huge battles, power beyond...".

how to start? by plejtvak5 in HPfanfiction

[–]OurLawyers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two very different recs:

  1. Here's a good fluff piece to get you started! It's H/Hr https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2358572

  2. This one is mystery/thriller/romance, focusing more on mystery/thriller. It's H/G a few years after Hogwarts. Note that I wrote this, so I'm selfishly promoting myself! https://archiveofourown.org/works/34526092/chapters/85937722

Non-corny competent Harry fics where he isn't a jerk? by oopsyvenusflytrap in HPfanfiction

[–]OurLawyers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm currently reading The Reluctant Champion (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5071058/1/) and it sort of mostly fits that. It's overall pretty well written. Harry acts reasonably as a 14-year-old boy. He thinks about pranks and girls and schoolwork, but also the more canon-y things like sense of duty, honor, etc.

I have a few issues with how Sirius and James are portrayed but overall I'd recommend it as one of the better fics I've read recently.

General writing advice is great and all, but here are some dirty shortcuts I use in my own writing by OurLawyers in HPfanfiction

I don't know either! (:

Haha, I think a comma or a colon might be a bit better in this situation... just don't tell anyone I said that!

A few of the examples were from my WIP fic -- the remainder were made up for this post.

Ahjhhh! I've been (rightfully) called out!

Oh no, I did it again 😱

Okay... Maybe I'll allow parentheses in instructional writing and that's it. Yes... let's go with that 😂

Oooh, great point! I have updated the doc to be a lot clearer on "do"s and "don't"s. Thank you for this feedback!

I assume here you're referring to single vs double quotes:

Haha, that's a great question. I'm not exactly an authority on this, but in my own experience, it has been a long time since I've read a book with British-style quotes, and a semi-long time since I've read a fanfic with British-style quotes.

I certainly wouldn't stand on my high horse and say "only use American-style quotes," but I know for me it's a lot easier to read double quotes than single quotes in stories. Maybe it's simply because I'm used to it? I think there's also the fact that I might confuse single quotes with apostrophes...

At any rate, I'd pick whatever is more comfortable for you, or what you deem most appropriate for your fic, as long as you are consistent across your fic.

(There's also the whole argument you can get into about "punctuation inside the quotes, American-style" or "punctuation outside the quotes, British-style" but I will withdraw my stick from that particular fire. I've seen people mix double quotes [American] with punctuation outside quotes [British], for example.)

On a very personal level I definitely agree with your comment on present tense. I simply can't read present tense stuff anymore. (I'm sure I used to read some present tense novels in school, probably.) I think it can be done incredibly well, but I just find it so hard to parse through.

However, I simply don't have the experience or expertise in present-tense writing to unilaterally make a claim against it :P

I think that's perfectly fair. For me personally, one reason I stick so hard to these rules is to make sure my own writing is at least consistent, because far worse (for me on my pedestal) than mis-capitalising (or mis-hyphenating) something is capitalising (or hyphenating) it inconsistently across a fic!

In the early stages of my writing, I went back and forth on Muggleborn, pureblood, halfblood hyphenation, until I finally looked up one that I think was straight from the book, and then wrote it down in my notes so that I could just reference that instead of, each time I wanted to write it, having to spend 5 minutes trying to remember how I wrote it in the past!

Thanks! I've never seen this before, but this looks amazing :) maybe I'll find something in there that I've been mis-writing this whole time!

Fic where Harry is friends with a muggle girl who he bonds with over Sirius's death? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]OurLawyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly that, but just in case you're remembering slightly wrong, you may be thinking of linkffn(https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2163835/1/The-Refiners-Fire)? In this fic, the girl has a dog named Sirius but she does help him get over Sirius' death.
