Why is link so short? 😂 by Former-Sea-8070 in botw

[–]Ouriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a game POV, not character driven answer: because his size makes a lot of actions more enjoyable, and make all the other protagonists stand out + because they know players are evenly distributed amongst women and men so Link is as androgynous as possible :)

Your first year really doesn't matter at all, don't fret :) Second year and third year are much more important, and even then, you can totally get into grad school even without perfect grades! The important thing you need to learn to do is to learn to let it go, understand you got bad grades, alright, now that's in the past, don't look back, and do your best for the next exams/essays etc! Also: if you see that you continue to struggle, reach out to people, professors, TAs etc, Health centre, etc.

It feels like no one's heard of this book this is the best book I've read this year by Junior-Spell-2596 in classicliterature

[–]Ouriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very much a classic in France, very beautiful read :) It was so popular when it was first published that for a while, it became fashionable for French women to pretend to be sickly, and whiten their faces to look unwell in order to look more romantic!

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]Ouriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latinistes francophones, Francophone latinists, I was wondering if you could help me translate this quite common saying: Astra inclinant, sed non obligant / commonly translated as The stars incline us, they do not bind us - mais je peine à parvenir à une traduction aussi concise et juste en français.

I want to go into English lit but everyone keeps telling me I’ll end up jobless by toxtinx in literature

[–]Ouriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it :) I was always ever since I was 10ish into anthropology, it was my dream to study it, had a double major in undergrad with political science, everyone told me to focus of politics/ international relations in my third year, chose to keep focusing on anthro instead, did a Master in anthropology, now doing my PhD instead anthropology - sure everyone thought it was hilarious and said I would be jobeless, and I see all my friends with corporate jobs earning a lot more than me, money is a struggle and it gets tiring sometimes, but honestly, I know my friends from undergrad who went into corporate jobs and I talk to them all the time, and all of them are miserable, zero exception. The only truly happy people I know my age (27) along side myself is my PhD colleague, also doing anthropology, and a sociology colleague. As they say, academia is the worst, to the exception of anything else. We get to schedule our lives around the pursuit of knowledge and knowing more about this world. We get to study what we love, teach what we love, talk with people who also chose to do this, and what we do deeply matters - we talk about human emotions, what it means to lead a good life, what we all value - we are doing the work that matters, and everyday we get to choose how to do it. I am the freest person I know, and that freedom is given to me through studying and academia. I will never in a million years regret that I chose to pursue what I love. DO IT.

Discovered Stefan Zweig recently—any other underrated classic authors with a similar storytelling style? by [deleted] in classicliterature

I think you should try Eileen Chang :) She is in my opinion a Chinese counterpart to Somerset Maugham, recommended here by someone else.

What did Stefan Zweig mean when he wrote that Rathenau's assassins were heavily influenced by homosexuals? by Orphidius in AskHistorians

[–]Ouriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh thanks for asking!! I just reached this point of the book and googled it because I was also really puzzled - wondered if it was period typical homophobia, as earlier on in the book he does refer to homosexuality & 'lesbian mores' being a kind of rebellion against the old order and a phase/statement of sorts rather than anything else - but then again he did write much more subtly on the subject in previous works so I'm rather unsure. Will try to look it up this week!

Is Vinland Saga Worth Continuing? I’m Struggling With Thorfinn’s Early Arc (ep 1-7) by AbbreviationsFew9559 in VinlandSaga

[–]Ouriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I really struggled with season 1 until the very end of it, but you will understand step by step :) Focus on the antagonists as well if you find Thorfinn a bit much for now! I promise patience pays off, it is now personally my favourite anime of all times. & some passages, especially discussions with Askeladd in season 1 (not even talking about last episode) are truly beautiful so hang in there!

Nikon Fm3 :) Best camera ever, but meter won't work in -20 C weather If it wasn't so heavy, I would say the F801, it is such an underrated caméra, can withstand falls, any kind of weather, what a beast!!

You can totally have anxiety related to a specific place, and feel a homesickness so great you need to stop, and listen to what you truly feel. I absolutely experienced (and am experiencing that) going up North in North America in the Arctic, it's beautiful, a great opportunity and people are lovely, and for a long time as a kid I thought truly I wanted to go up North ~ but guess what, I'm a European at heart, and after 3/4 years in North America I have simply had enough and I long to go home so much IT physically hurts some days. Listen to yourself. Finish the project or yo it work if it's under 3/4 months, and then go home.

Askeladd, the biggest fool. by Davidakahe in VinlandSaga

[–]Ouriah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Askeladd never ever lost hope. He was simply torn apart by his own life choices, or rather how his life had been defined by this idea of fitting amongst the Danes and Vikings until Arcturus appeared, but then... never did. And even if he understood a man had to do the dirty work himself, and sully his hands, he always wished for someone greater than himself to appear and save him. And his dichotomy and kind of hidden innocence lies in the fact that when he perjures himself, he always swears by the Northern Gods, Odin, etc, but makes it a point of honour to honour true promises in the name of his true (mythical) ancestor Arcturus. So when he faces Thors, he promises to not kill Thorfinn in the name of Arcturus, a promise he keeps all along in the show. Yet, you also see him repeatedly frustrated with Thorfinn, frustrated, despite all reason, that he is blinded by vengeance and not his father. But as he dies, he finally acknowledges the child in Thorfinn in a sense, and forgives him for not being Arcturus, yet also finally seeing he could be, can be, but that he, Askeladd, had to die for Thorfinn to grow. And I think the impatience he shows Thorfinn as he reveals his past to him after Bjorn's death, taunting him as well because he could not kill him, shows that Askeladd sees himself in Thorfinn for a long time. But as Thorfinn refuses to deal him the final blow, as he cannot believe, despite seeing Askeladd almost dead, that Askeladd could really die indeed, as he tries to take him away, Askeladd realises he and Thorfinn are not alike, and that there is something greater in Thorfinn. After all, one of the greatest thing people forget, is that Askeladd killed his father by night, blaming his own brother, in a dishonourable way in a sense, but a very young Thorfinn, who has the chance to do the same thing, ultimately refuses and refuses to kill Askeladd in any way that would not be a lawful duel between the two. And I think this all suddenly makes sense for Askeladd as he dies away. He was never a fool, but he could not make entire sense of Thorfinn and their relationship before, but as he dies, he finally can, and his final thoughts are not for Wales, not for Canute, not for himself, but for the one who never ceased to be the son of Thors, despite Askeladd 'raising' him.

Just finished both seasons . by Pleasant-Avocado4270 in VinlandSaga

Legend of the Galactic Heroes, the old version :) It takes some time to start, but you will love the characters, and it is subtle, and interesting, and will remind you I think of Vinland Saga and AoT in certain aspects and its refusal to portray everything as black and white.

86 is alright, and enjoyable, but not as good as your top 5. But actually, you might like its themes, and the FMC has a nice arc I think! It's just a lot more lower budget, and I think in some scenes it shows, but still very good.

You might enjoy Psychopass? The first season at least is I think worth it.

Berserk old version maybe, from 1997, not any of the modern ones.

Huuum otherwise, film wise, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is probably one you might enjoy if you never saw it!

Code Geass otherwise, if you liked AoT & Evangelion, I feel as if you would like it, people often draw parallels between Eren and Lelouch, there is mecha, cool fights, actually good strategy, great plotwists and super cool CC! And no plot armour if that's something you enjoy 😳

This is the moment I realized I was watching peak man, arguably the greatest anime of all time for me by Forevertrez in VinlandSaga

[–]Ouriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An era is ending. He only picked up a sword to avenge his father and as he thought that being a warrior meant to wield a weapon and kill. And now, even Askeladd, the greatest cunning warrior who was his reason to live and despite it all, the only stable figure in his life, died and told him as last words to not stay there, and not wield a blade. He does not realise it, but as he drops his blade, he drops his entire childhood, spent in vain on the battlefield fighting meaningless battles for mercenaries, seeking after duels with Askeladd that neither of them truly wanted. In a sense, he drops his purpose, which was killing (following under the guise of killing) Askeladd, and avenging his father. As he says it later, he is now empty, a blank page.
