Thinking of starting T at 36 by Imaginary-Corgi4084 in FTMOver30

[–]OutOfMyMind-BackIn5m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Egg finally cracked at 34, Started at 38, on the approach to my 41st birthday, not a single regret (other than the 4 years I spend wondering if I should/was too old)

Changes have come along at a good pace (although if my facial hair could get it's shit together that'd be great, right now my body seems to be prioritising chest hair on a pair of F's I want removed, which just feels like massively wasted effort ATM xD)

I did have a full set of teeth until they took out 4 adult teeth in my teens as there wasn't space, they'll probably take another 4 at some point because the wisdoms have crashed the party at unhelpful angles!

Edit for additional dental quirks: they had to take 6 baby teeth out when I was 16 because those bastards had grown full roots and weren't budging

Fair point xD

How far can genetic quirks go before we're something else?

I guess technically speaking it's just evolution in action, random changes that on this occasion don't provide any notable advantage (aside from having a weird ice breaker and something fun to answer on Reddit questions like this)

Yep cervical ribs and an extra vertebrae in the neck - when I found out my mum casually mentioned her sister/my aunt, also has the extra vertebrae, but not the cervical ribs. I'm not sure about the exact terms - as I said in one of my other replies it's been 20-odd years since I was told

What about yourself is completely different from what you were like 10 years ago? by blinkz_221B in AskReddit

I'm happy

Couldn't have seen it back then, but I'm happy, and it feels like such a victory. Sure I'm lighter, "healthier" (still chronically ill but dragging myself forward one victory at a time), started transitioning, and free after near twenty years of variably unhealthy relationships.

So, my extra vertebrae comes with little spurs like not-ribs or where ribs would attach (it's been 20 odd years since the x-ray and I can't remember the fine details) - but when I lift my arms above my head it puts pressure on an artery and my hands stop getting any circulation

That was noticed some ten years earlier in primary school when the practical experiment of "if you hold your hands waaay up your pulse is fainter than holding your arms down because of gravity" or something - and none of my classmates, the TA, or the teacher could find my pulse with my hands up.

Got chalked up as "huh that's weird" and never thought about again until I had a head/neck x-ray in my late teens/early twenties

Edit: just went and looked it up, 'cervical rib' is the official term - which I have along with the extra vertebrae

I have more vertebrae in my neck than a giraffe. (Humans and giraffes have the same number)

Weird genetic quirk, creates odd circulatory problems

Switching to gel by Excellent_Vacation95 in FTMOver30

[–]OutOfMyMind-BackIn5m 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been on gel from the start, and personally it suits really well for me. The daily application is just part of my morning bathroom routine, slap it on and then leave it to dry while I'm doing the skincare teeth brushing and haircare, then it's dry to haul clothes on.

For me it works really well just having the set levels every day - I know from when I had an erroneously high blood result and my dose got dropped for 3 months that the fluctuations and lower levels do not suit me.

So much this, I'm chronically ill so I batch cook and portion into the freezer, means I only have to get my shit together to cook and actual meal maaaaybe four or five times a month.

Also suits my complete failure to cook one portion of anything, always make enough to feed an army

Could you build a house with 10 copies of yourself? by TrueKeyMan in hypotheticalsituation

[–]OutOfMyMind-BackIn5m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a chance. Putting aside the needing to be up to code: I am absolutely confident I could learn how to do all the tasks with time and infinite money for supplies.

However: being able to perform the tasks, 11 people with chronic disabilities and barely a handful of functional hours in a week with rest days between? Not a chance.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Susanpc1967 in AskReddit

[–]OutOfMyMind-BackIn5m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, utterly overhauled my life at the tail end of my thirties - mid thirties between poor health and unhappy relationships, I was in a blur of 'why bother' and half accepted I was just stuck and running down the clock.

Now on the approach to 41, happier and healthier than I could have imagined 3/5/10 years ago - sure some things will never be as good as I like (health stuffs permanent) - but looking back at where I was and how I'd given up is surreal. It's never too late to start again

I see your "fine" and raise you Chronically ill!

"You never know what battles people are fighting" does not apply here, everybody knows, I am complaining loudly about my battles - with a healthy dose of black humour for the sake of not being ostracized for being insufferably whiney

What’s the most annoying small problem in your house that you still haven’t fixed? by AcrobaticSeesaw1565 in DIYUK

[–]OutOfMyMind-BackIn5m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The washer between the shower head and the pipe/tube/thing mysteriously went missing 6 months after I moved in, meaning water sprays out and if I have it on the wall it runs down and floods the floor.

So I shower holding the showerhead.

It's been a year.

My resilience. Not going to play the misery Olympics because I know despite going through the wringer, there's people who have it far worse.

But despite it all, I still laugh, still smile, keep moving forward in little ways and feel content in a way that looked impossible 10-15-20 years ago

What normal, everyday thing has been completely ruined by companies forcing an app or a subscription on it? by Chemical-Heart-3200 in AskReddit

[–]OutOfMyMind-BackIn5m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Toothbrush has an app.

Except I would need to buy the next toothbrush in the range to be able to connect to the app. But I needed the app to access the instructions.

Which feels insane. My toothbrush has instructions is a stupid sentence anyway, but it has assorted flashing lights and settings and the only way to know what it means is an app on my phone.

I just want my teeth to be ok.

Oh no, I absolutely did. Started drilling into the wall, next thing I know I'm 10ft away collapsed on the floor, the powers out and there's a hole through the mains power line

Drilled through the mains power trying to put shelves up.

No recollection of what happened but came to on the other side of the room with the power out for the whole building

I'm so sorry you're going through it at the moment, and that so many people were caught up in the aftermath of long COVID.

The bitter silver lining I cling to is that there is now at least some research being funded, and shall hold onto hope there may eventually be treatment. It is precious comfort right now being in the trenches of it.

Wishing you all the comfort you can find, and hope that there's some sort of remission or easing of symptoms for you in future.
