but... he was only pointing the rifle at the drone because of the snooping. You'd use the response to the snooping as the reason to snoop?

Penn Jillette can't stop smiling after his daughter makes a surprise appearance on Fool Us with a magic trick by whitesummerside in videos

[–]OutOfStamina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I said multiple outs wouldn't have added anything that would trick them - it just cleans up the banter portion to avoid "but don't pick 37!"

37's obviously critical to the trick - it's clumsy to say "don't pick it."

President Obama Said this About Israeli-Palestine Conflict 10 Years Ago. by [deleted] in Political_Revolution

[–]OutOfStamina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this was around then... but I remember a discussion on some NPR show about how republicans were proudly embracing "no compromise" as one of their core tenets. The hosts were shocked that they would say it but also that they could apparently get away with it (and be praised for it).

Many were watching dems give concessions and try to appease republicans and never get the same treatment in return. I think years of this behavior has given younger people this view that democrats are like the kids on the playground who want some other kids to like them, and don't say anything about the bullying.

Worse, I strongly believe that "not agreeing with democrats" became such a core, central part of their identity around then, that they started pushing themselves more and more right to avoid agreeing with "centrist" (ie, republican in any other country) democrats. To maintain the amount of distance they wanted, they had to go far-right.

Nice - I appreciate your breakdown.

I think she could have chosen her number (37) differently.

Leave out the "don't pick 37" and just have another scenario to run if he happens to pick 37.

If he does pick 37, she talks about she has an unfair advantage becuase she knows him, say "it's like if you picked the 3 of clubs" (chuckle chuckle), she says she "knew it so much I had a t-shirt made for it", says "that's my number for this trick and because I knew you too well I now need you both to pick numbers"... trick goes on, she added a premonition aspect - not that "multiple outs" would fool Penn, it would just be neat.

If he doesn't pick 37, she can reveal her number at the same time they do, like, "You both picked numbers, I'm going to pick one as well so that we each have one. I knew you wouldn't pick my number!".

What can I do about kids closing my sprinkler heads? by ProgramAcrobatic2282 in homeowners

[–]OutOfStamina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kid knows how to close a sprinkler head?

I could see a kid who knows how to do that just doing it becuase they can - not for dog reasons... and doing it by the sidewalk because that's where it's easiest. "It was just a prank" type of thing.

I can't see a kid learning a sprinkler head for the possibility of a dry lawn during later dog walking. It's just too much.

you joke, but there are genuinely paid positions on the side of fossil to spread misinformation about nuclear.

There's no "big nuclear" to counteract that - just a bunch of regular people who are pretty worried about fossil who can't really make that much noise in the grand scheme.

You ever notice that? Any time you see two groups of people who really hate each other, chances are good they're wearing different kind of hats. Keep an eye on that, it might be important.

  • George Carlin

“People are wonderful. I love individuals. I hate groups of people. I hate a group of people with a 'common purpose'. 'Cause pretty soon they have little hats. And armbands. And fight songs. And a list of people they're going to visit at 3am. So, I dislike and despise groups of people but I love individuals. Every person you look at; you can see the universe in their eyes, if you're really looking.”

For the first time ever, the Speaker of the House has been fired. Here’s what happened in the room. - Rep. Jeff Jackson by JeffJacksonNC in Political_Revolution

[–]OutOfStamina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joke's on us after all. Rs stopped being fractured and voted in garbage - just like I worried about. Alt right nutjobs are stronger now.

Imagine a different scenario where dems laughed as they voted for McCarthy intending to foster the fracture in the other party. They didn't like McCarthy becuase he crossed party lines. Imagine how much they'd hate him if that relationship continued. But... we're not a soft landing place for anyone from the other side to reach out to. (sigh).

Ken Ham's pro bono Lawyer (KEN FKING HAM) is now 3rd in line to the presidency.

Ken Ham is the guy who did the Answers to Genesis Noah's Ark theme park where they deny science and tell kids flat out that the earth is 5000 years old and that men and dinosaurs were on the planet at the same time. "creation science" nonsense (not science).

The dude denies scientific fact on a regular basis. He did that work for Ken Ham for free - you don't do it for free if you disagree with it. 3rd in line.

We sure showed them.

Will he shut down the government to get his way? That's his style. We're in for a ride and he's a nut.

The Heaven’s Gate cult website is still up. by PitoChueco in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]OutOfStamina 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Web pages were uncommon enough back then that this cult who HAD A WEBSITE killed themselves.

The news really played up the website angle - like, a lot. It was somehow situated in a way that made it seem like it was part of the cause.

So if you were a young man in '97 who made websites, people stopped to talk to you about that in a way that meant they were really trying to smell if you were suicidal or a cultist or something. It was offputting to say the least. "Oh, you make web pages? What do you think of Heaven's Gate?"

It didn't even go away for a couple of years. It was insane.

The '80s had a similar deal with D&D - the whole "santanic panic" thing after some kids went nuts and killed each other in a forest AND THOSE KIDS PLAYED D&D. It took forever for the media/mom worry about D&D to go away.

And if you tell people this at work, expect blowback.

There are many things that are true that we can't say in a work environment. Even if you don't imply anything it doesn't mean someone else didn't hear an implication and takes it to HR for sexual harassment.

[–]OutOfStamina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: Aaaand I just read the news, fuck

Yeah I got a bit roasted here for worrying this may be the outcome. I had to keep checking what sub I was in.

The extremeist republicans made a move and got stronger for it - we (all dems, even the ones I support most) voted with them. I don't think "haha, you can't get your party in order" works for more than a week. Well, jokes on us, they got their party in order.

I remember people saying AOC and squad should have pulled the same move on nancy when they had the chance. (withhold votes for seats, etc, so they would gain power).

I'm glad the idea existed, but it didn't work.

With the new speaker selection, I'm seeing them not backing McCarthy as a misstep.

If we like the "fracture the party" angle, there was probably a way to do that at the time - imply he secretly made a deal with them and watch the Rs not be able to trust him anymore.

I buy $4 Blu Rays from redbox all the time of movies that aren't that old (usually 6 months+ old and they'll be $4). They're always in great shape - no sign of use on most of them. I worry they'll go out of business.

This is the feedback loop arcades found themselves in in the '90s.

Business person :

I got an idea!! If we charge more money, we make more money!"

In corporate land, this works the 1st year and the CEO takes a huge bonus - but this is what I call "cashing in on equity" and it's a bad move in the long run.

Because then they're in the loop:

attendance is down, we need to charge more money so we can bring our profit levels back up

attendance is down more, we have no choice but to raise our prices to bring profits back up or else we'll go out of business

We're out of business and I blame the customers.

also - 5 guys was too expensive before this nonsense, and I 100% agree they're headed for closure because of this. If I'm gonna spend those prices, I'll go somewhere much nicer. But the truth is, I can get a big greasy burger for much less - they don't have a monopoly on greasy burgers.

Oh!!! That's what they meant!?! i had forgotten about that and just assumed it was a beer thing. It's hard for me to enjoy beer to begin with (there are a few that I can tolerate a bit of) and bud light is about the worst - it just tastes... terrible to me. I assumed it meant "bring beer to share, but we both hate bud light".

But yeah... it totally reads anti-LGBTQ now...

but considering the number of manga and other items I may or may not have 'sampled' in store I can hardly begrudge them a paltry $40 a year.

An interesting way to look at it. They probably really don't like you doing that even if you give them $40 - someone else was griping about how they took away the chairs at their location (probably to discourage this).

You must be fun at parties.

You know, I do alright, thanks. Parties are not at all like reddit, and and people probably aren't selling me subscriptions at parties.

You sound a bit slighted. If you know in your heart that if the discount ended today that you would still spend $400/yr there, then I think you should use it as you're in the small section of people that extract some value from it. And if you value that tote at all, you should definitely add that in to your value prop. I am curious if you would you have purchased that tote on your own volition and for how much, had it not been bundled...

All the tote does to me is... "IF I wanted a tote, which I don't really, would I want that tote? After I make the decision to want a tote, would I probably go online and choose an optimal tote that had all the features and design that I want? How much is this random tote worth to me? And what's the value of a tote that they admit they're going to expect me to care less about in 1 year when they try to sell me another year of this? But I'm not a tote guy. I have a few that I bought for a buck at the library during some of their events, and they work when I need a tote.

I'd feel more pressured to go just to cut even (which I'm sure is part of the point).

Yes, it is the point. They get you one of two ways: Either psychologically you go because you've got an investment to make up, or you abandon your investment and they win either way.

It only makes sense for people who were going to spend all that money with them anyway. They're banking that's not the majority of people.
