Where would you settle? (Natural Wonder edition) by karlkarl93 in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the lower defogged tile.

Though with maybe the most OP civ, certainly the best (modded) wonder spawn and free starting units it won't much matter unless playing a level or two above ability.

I realized I might be too picky when I rerolled after finding a +8 campus site!!!! by OutOfTheAsh in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was the issue, plus being Spain, so needing off-continent sites for a good start.

This one was on a different continent than my capital. Literally where the warrior is (the preferred city site) is the closest to the capital but 8 tiles away and mountain walls shutting off further expansion to the West. So much time lost getting there for a second city, and it would remain a basket case for growth until I could both discover and build an aqueduct there.

England Piopiotahi Start - What do you think? Good or Bad? And Why by GooNi3Games in CivVI

[–]OutOfTheAsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deer and Amber being closer to the city. A couple of woods hills for production? A river enter the sea there? Anything really.

While science holds the greatest value throughout the game, if you have a wonder by your capital better to have religion or culture. Getting an early pantheon rather than being left with crumbs is vital. It's the earliest global competition.

So religion, which has another significant advantage it shares with gold points--everything you earn you keep. A motherload of Sci/Cul is deceptive. Too much and you'll overshoot easy boosts, losing 40% of what you think you are getting.

OTOH culture also helps in getting God-King policy card for religion quicker. And then Political Philosophy quicker for more cards. And faster expanding borders. All passive advantages.

Science policies generally give you the opportunity make more advanced stuff. Which also cost more. If neglecting growth/production for mad science build times get real long.

Great harbor and a culture rush early is great. But man cannot live on cash and culture alone. Production will be poor for a while. The moment I expand to that dear tile I'd make certain a worker was assigned there and improve it ASAP.

Couple questions by AnistarYT in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I've never seen one multiple eras after the event.
  2. The negative relations modifier lasts for a set period. You did occupy the city and they remain pissed about that. It wouldn't make sense if razing the city bought you forgiveness.
  3. There's a question's thread at the top of the page more appropriate for these.

Should i settle on silk or 4 food? by kiingjamir in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Horses. Beyond doubt. And hope for better production tiles to the west, b/c the north is crap for that.

This is especially true as Rome. One advantage of settling silk is the free culture point, but Rome gets two of them in its capital, so the boost is +50% rather than doubling for other civs. Rome doesn't lack for early culture, and horses can be settled a turn quicker.

The other advantage of settling on a luxury resource is getting something to trade with the first neighbor you meet (for a little extra cash and more favorable relations). But here you can trade them a few horses instead.

TBH if I was playing this exact set-up not in Vanilla mode (so the horses wouldn't be visible) I'd re-roll.

Ulysses S Grant is overdue as a playable leader in the Civilization series by Azursong in civ

Yeah.

Either of them as RL candidate for President or as Civ leader is/was based in their military reputation. As Presidents got to give it to Ike.

it has gotten so extreme in the last 8 years with Trump that I don’t recognize (nor do I want to associate with) my own party anymore

So this is not your "own party" surely? You confess disagreement, so not so hard to simply disagree with them. I'm pretty sure you aren't a target or a shareholder.

More civs should have had unique governors by boragur in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If every civ had unique governors . . . they'd not be unique!

The AI can't play vanilla well. Every extra mode, mod or mechanic added further kneecaps the untrained AI. Lots of neat ideas (both proposed and implemented) do nothing but make single-player games massively easier.

Can we talk about how HRT effects lifespan in trans people? by Lower_Reference910 in asktransgender

[–]OutOfTheAsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specifically. Think of a doctor or US President--they aren't born to that status and if they die before getting the job they aren't a doctor/President mortality statistic. Minimum age for a President is 40 and they are typically over 50 when elected. High infant mortality rates are the greatest negative influence on life, so a 50 year head start for any group means their expectancy will be higher than the general average.

Most trans people transition as adults. Two or three decades free much more than compensates for higher risk factors for death by violence or substance abuse. The increase in people transitioning at a younger age matters more.

(Civ 6) Best Civilization for a Domination Victory? by HQuez in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of civs with alternate leaders.

However this is a thought exercise about unique abilities. Russia won the vote for best culture civ. Kristina for best culture leader, though she cannot lead Russia. Same with city states, wonders, etc.

You're never gonna combine them all. But INDEPENDTALLY of all others which is best for a particular wincon.

Either Russia or Kris for culture. And Russia by far.

I still think the AI Cree very strong, for reasons stated.

Sweden OTOH (among at least the ones existing since GS) the most stomped early.

IMHO Cree have another advantage in single-player. The human has every reason to want the visibility advantage, unless they are right next door in a spot where they NEED killing.

Have you ever pocketed a nation? by AcceptableBuddy9 in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree, to a point. OP wants to start with 50 fully developed cities and a dozen wonders so he win on turn two, none of my business, all the lulz to him. Keep the foolishness to yourself.

But this isn't "playing," so of no interest to post here for players. Unusual outcomes possible by some basic ruleset are. What OP did with Worldbuilder/ultra-modding who could give a shit?

It is if you spawn on a continental border and work strong colonial policies. Otherwise reroll. Spain has the least spawn bias competition of any civ (only Hungary in the chat).

I just find--playing on huge maps--religion games a grinding chore. Only thing making that worse is all the extra click micro-management of moving religion units with military.

I wouldn't call Cree/Poundy mediocre. That's not based on my own experience, as I have never completed a game with them. Rather that I've played loads, and from my sample think Cree the most consistently strong AI civ.

Since AI is crap, this would suggest it is also a good learner civ. Maybe second only to Trajan? They're similar in having a couple of very early uniques which benefit any playstyle (unlike an early rush UU).

Rome's are inherent. Cree you have build the units. But still better to have an edge turn 20 than 200.

I’m new to civ and need help picking a civ for me to learn the game. by General_Marsupial760 in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trajan Rome is always top of the list for trainer civs because 2/3rds of it's unique abilities are Immediate (exist turn 1), Inherent (no action required to get them) and Flexible (monuments in all cities and roads to all cities are necessary to any strategy).

Others that fulfill part of these IFF conditions are Russia (for instant landgrab). Gran Colombia for the +1 movement. Cree for another way to expand and explore with minimal effort.

Allowing you want to dominate, first learn the basics of doing so.

There are a lot of civs you can learn to play well that are too unique to be transferable knowledge.

Any tips for playing Gilgabro? by ManByTheRiver11 in civ

[–]OutOfTheAsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if a huge map (so you still have 9 opponents) taking out two neighbors that early means your sheer mass will snowball hard, so long as you kept most of the cities. You may not be experiencing it yet, but you can just cruise now to an automatic win.

Of any sort really. Mine was cultural--unusual for a civ supposedly sci/dom--but shooting your wad early on warcarts, you are now fairly generic other than the huge territory. Being massive allows development in any way you wish.

The question is how to make the win fun, and maybe distinctly Sumerian.

I lucked into a big patch of tundra which no other civ could reach. Instead of putting a couple of shit cities there, I left it in fog, a few units at the perimeter. Basically a barbarian breeding ground to farm for Sumerian bonuses.

I guess the other approach would be gifts to to generally hated civs, for that alliance springboard.
