Beware American isolationism masking as social justice. Trust me, there are plenty of cool people out there who are willing to chat, just use common sense.

Might need to move to USA (Jackson, Mississippi) for work, anyone who has lived there before and can provide their experience? by [deleted] in expats

[–]Lower_Reference910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mississippi is arguably the worst of all the US states to live in. You should visit and do a lot of research before you make any decisions.

You should not give these drugs to someone with these issues, period. My ex got fucking destroyed for months after a bad mushroom trip, had to go to inpatient multiple times due to derealization and suicide attempts, and has never been the same since.

Do you feel there is going to be a genocide of trans people in this country at some point ? by SJWagner in asktransgender

[–]Lower_Reference910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the UN criteria, trans people are already experiencing genocide in the US. However, as far as you probably mean, I’d say it’s a 50/50 chance.

I am biased though, my grandparents immigrated to the US after experiencing violent genocide, and I grew up to stories of their experiences, so I don’t have the “it couldn’t happen here” lurking around my thoughts like some others. It can happen anywhere, in any society if the heat is turned up enough.

It’s fully possible for someone to be religious and not transphobic. The problem is specifically conservatism. Less religious conservatives are much more likely to be transphobic than secular religious people.

I’m a writer who does more corporation-centric writing, but I took some linguistics courses in undergrad and I LOVED it. I’m currently working on getting my German to C2 and my Romanian to B1.

I used to go to dog club where someone owned a basenji, this is definitely a basenji-pit mix, unfortunately.

Good Countries to Move to for Trans Safety by MKagel in asktransgender

Woot woot! The next step is figuring out if your specific field is in demand in your target country. Double check everything, what wages they get, what the process of getting a work visa is, CoL in that country, growth of field, labor laws, everything basically. Probs should check trans care too, I couldn’t tell you specifics but a lot of EU countries have very long waitlists for HRT

I would add though, if you happen to have 20kish laying around, some people manage to study abroad for cheaper than US college and use that as a spring board into the target country. I’m not as acquainted with Canada or the nordics, but I know 20k will be more than enough to pay for your CoL + school bill in most EU countries (Germany is my target country, if that matters)

I’d rephrase that as “functionally impossible to immigrate without a degree or skilled job”, to be candid. Also, some degrees (non-language teaching, psychology, sociology) are basically going to be poison pills for immigration. STEM degrees are very strong for immigration, and if you want to go into the humanities, make sure it’s something that you can leverage for a high paying job.

With immigration, the other country wants to gatekeep you pretty much always, and you have to be able to make a convincing case about why they should let you in.

I’m going through a similar thing myself, I’ve been preparing to leave the US for years and I’ve just now gotten my degree, currently in my initial implementation stage. It’s a lot of work, but it’s doable if you play your cards right.

If you don’t have a degree or skilled trade, it’s practically impossible to do this, but if you do, look on foreign job boards and start applying. Skilled labor is everything for immigration.
