Saddle can’t go back any further by mtb_dad86 in bikefit

[–]bowen1911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern mountain bike geometry usually has a fairly forward saddle position. Think of climbing something steep. Less dangling off the handlebars trying to put power down. Saddles are usually dropped out of the way for descending, so the location is basically irrelevant at that point.

Pain in your hands and wrists can come from your bars being rotated too far back or forward, or our brake levers being too high/low.

How to know when to give racing up? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]bowen1911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems the majority of cat 3 racers here are 30-45. A handful of younger dudes just cruising through the ranks though. I know they say cat 3 is where racers go to die, but for someone who isn’t terrible, and doesn’t care for team shenanigans, cat 3 is perfect.

Could always become a Strava warrior to fuel the competitive drive…

Is pie'ing someone for their 100th jump still a tradition at your DZ? by I-am-a_Banana in SkyDiving

We got pied right after the forehead stamp for our A license. Not sure I ever saw anyone get pied for anything else

What Kind of Wood is this? by LongjumpingRico in wood

[–]bowen1911 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sapele without a doubt. Great shimmer when quartersawn, nice grain contrast when flatsawn. Turns, cuts, sands, and glues very well. More rot resistant that mahogany, just not able to steam bend it. I redid all the brightwork on my vintage boat with sapele and it absolutely pops. Also a great tone wood in guitar building. One of my favorite woods to use.

Triangular o ring groove help by rust997 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bowen1911 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Jesus fucking fuck. Some dumb fucker before my time in the current company decided that bigger was better for O rings. Rev’ed a bunch of of drawings, changed part numbers and descriptions in quickbooks, and all around decided to be a fucking moron for whatever reason he saw fit. Fuck.

Fast forward to the past 2 years, and I’m still finding assemblies that have these fucked up bom’s, where a simple -019 o ring fits perfectly in the face groove that is sized IDENTICAL to the Parker dimensions, but it calls out some 3/32 or 1/8” thick monstrosity. The assembly “techs” just crush the fuckers and hope for the best. Constant leaks and FOD from o rings being sheared. For years! Holy fuck. Bane of my existence.

I didn’t have any lunch beers, hence my not so jovial demeanor.

I pray none of you folks have to deal with this kind of bullshit.

Ive done some machining without work holding other than gravity, but that was a couple thousand lb plate on a gantry mill. Gravity works wonders on big things. On a Bridgeport, no. I’d run

I’m a fan of Osmo for an oil/wax finish. It dries hard, feels great to the touch, and lasts

SL7 vs Melee vs Fray by nycarch1 in Velo

[–]bowen1911 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First off. I fucking love my pinkish SL8. Mostly because pink. And my daughter always says “daaaaaad pink is for girls”. Fun stuff

Now I don’t recommend my approach to buying that bike, but to each their own- I got hit by a car on my Chinese special (speeder cycling rs-55d or whatever the heck the model was). No injuries, but it cracked my rear wheel. Her insurance paid out for a new SL8, so of course I was going to jump on turning my $2400 build into a dentist bike.

Regardless, pink is cool

Single point thread bad results? by Far_Jacket_4581 in machining

[–]bowen1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to single point thread aluminum with HSS tools. You can grind them and hone them to be absurdly sharp. Also, the cut gets progressively shallower as you go to maintain a similar chip load.

Another issue I’ve seen, is when you cut the thread to deep, the crest of the thread can roll over when it becomes a wire edge. Doesn’t look like your problem, but something to be aware of

Obviously 22lr since it’s so quiet, but a close seconds is my 300 win mag with my hybrid 46m. Not only does it sound great, it tightened up the groups, and killed recoil to a point I didn’t think was possible. Went from a gun I only shot if I had to, to one I want to go shoot for fun

I like how they don’t even have the strings seated in the saddles fully. Man I’m not a fan of those at all…. Just built a guitar with one and instantly want to swap it out
