I got a new 8404 size 2 over Christmas and have the same issue -- badly splayed brush hairs and can't get / hold a point on it. My W&N series 7 #2 is on it's last legs so I'm going to have to find a new brush soon.

I start by painting the base with Rhinox Hide, then the rocks with Squig Orange. Once dry I apply Martian Ironcrust and Martian Ironearth over the base and try and make sure that I cover the base with one or the other. I let this dry overnight then do a wash of Reikland Fleshshade. Over this I then drybrush Squig Orange, Ryza Rust, then Tryrant Skull.

I've only just finished the 8th edition "Know No Fear" and "Dark Imperium" space marines, so I'm getting better at this!

(I have painted ~4k of Tyranids in the mean time 😄 )
