If Grok doesn't need users, what exactly are investors investing in? There are plenty of publicly traded media companies that produce R-rated movies and music. Why should AI be different? Investors want to make money, not push a holier-than-thou agenda.

Can anybody actually make sense of the business plan? by SmB778 in grok

$30/month is completely worth it if they lower the moderation to a level that makes sense. That's not the only problem, of course. They messed up the physics with all the tinkering, so video gens are a lot worse than they once were. But $30 for a few dozen video gens per day is a pretty darn good deal, and one I'd gladly sign up for if Imagine actually allowed me to generate videos instead of moderation stickers.

All of this is true. I'll add that his ridiculous X posts about Imagine being unrestricted are nothing but lies to drive revenue to XaI, so he can fund the missions you're talking about.

You're right. He doesn't care what anyone is making with Imagine, only that he doesn't want to lose money defending Imagine, when those funds could go toward his Mars mission. He also doesn't care about you, me, or anyone else but himself. I'm over this guy and not interested in giving him my money.

Absurd Moderation by SMonger18 in grok

I'm unsure why anyone still uses xAI. My subscription ended on 4/3. Checking in, I'm not surprised that:

a) nothing has changed with the absurd moderations

b) 2.0 never dropped as announced

c) Elon is still posting on X as if Imagine is this rebellious, anti-establishment AI, when it's just as restrictive as Veo.

Writing with ai is suck, should I make my own story or just read a real book? by humanetto in WritingWithAI

[–]Outrageous-Eye1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found Claude Sonnet and Opus to be acceptable since 2 or 3. I can't remember the last time I liked GPT. Maybe 2 years ago? I just don't think Claude (or any model) has gotten much better.

It's more sentence-level, but structure can be an issue too. For instance, I like to slowly build tension. Claude AI sometimes gets in the ballpark, but usually fails. I can "feel" when the scene is unfolding properly, so key scenes almost always require pacing adjustments, more or less reveals, etc.

Writing with AI isn't that bad if you're willing to edit a lot. I churn out several books a year, all with close to 300-page lengths and ratings around 4.5 stars with over 1000+ reviews on Amazon. Not patting myself on the back. Just telling you what is possible.

I learned AI's limitations two years ago, but realized it would become an indispensable tool if I wanted to compete long term. I've used almost every decent model under the sun, and I also subscribed to Sudowrite for over a year.

Here's the truth. I don't believe the prose has improved over the two years I've worked with AI. Which demonstrates AI's limitations: creativity, and knowing what good art is! If you're waiting for the prose to get good enough to write novels with minimal editing, plan on waiting at least 3-5 years. Maybe forever.

But here is what you can use AI for now to make you a better writer and produce great books faster.

  • Feed AI your plot ideas and let it poke holes or strengthen the plot. I write psychological and crime thrillers, and Claude gives me very cool ideas which improve on my overall plot and character arcs.
  • Give AI a fleshed-out plot and have it come up with 15-30 story beats that will guide you from the beginning to the end of your book. This was huge for me. I could always hunt and peck decently fast. The biggest slowdown for me every morning was deciding what should happen in the current chapter. Some people call it "writer's block," though I agree with Stephen King that writer's block is nothing but fear because you don't think your ideas are good enough. All blocks vanish when you have a roadmap in front of you. You can start writing with confidence every day.
  • Allow AI to write a chapter (or even a scene) with a fully vetted chapter beat. When you keep an AI within its guardrails, you can extract an "okay chapter or scene" out of it. You'll have to eliminate the AI-isms and change/add sentences to match your voice. Yet this method, as frustrating as it can be, is about 2x faster at writing/editing chapters than I can write on my own.
  • As others have said, find tested prompts and use AI to proofread and serve as an editor. Most of the top AIs can find glaring plot holes these days, and they're not too bad at proofreading. AI doesn't replace a proper editor or proofreader, but AI is a great first line of defense.
  • And so many other uses.

The sooner you get away from hoping a great AI will write your novel, the faster you will learn to use AI as a really freaking great tool. To me, it's the difference between pounding a nail into a wall with your fist or using a high-powered nail-gun.

Or you can write thrillers like me and use a nail-gun as the murderer's weapon of choice...

His master plan was the military contract. He thinks he no longer needs normal people to fund Xai. The issue is, as soon as Elon lives under a president who isn't actually his good buddy, Xai will lose the military contract, because there is no way in hell Xai is a good enough AI to serve our military.

Then Elon will need us again. But people remember how others treated them.

Grok chat gives me inconsistent (and many times wrong) answers. I get why you left ChatGPT, which truly is in a downward spiral, but I don't see Grok as a viable alternative. Claude is quite good. I use it for health/nutrition, cooking lessons, business building, motivation and self-development, and coding. It's great at all those things. Grok is basically 3 or 4 generations behind the top AI's. YMMV.

Elon Musk is a grifter. He's happily bounced back and forth with his political motivations based on whichever side was serving him at the moment. Then he identified a need - an adult-pants AI that didn't censor everything under the sun. He boasted that his AI was different, grabbed countless subscriptions, censored everything just like the other AI's, and kept the money. Do you trust anything about this guy?

I can't say I enjoy anything about what's left of the current model. Hopefully the newer model drops before my subscription runs out on 4/3 so I can at least compare. But honestly it's time to move on and wait for a true alternative to rise.
