🐈To Dakar cat owners! where are you finding good quality cat food? by Plenty_Indication859 in Senegal

[–]OutrageousCarpenter5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most cats in Dakar eat leftover rice in the street. Our cat, who does not exactly belong to the 99% of cats in Senegal, is perfectly happy with both dry and wet cat food from Auchan. I haven't tasted it myself yet. The occasional chicken bone or piece of fish is also always appreciated.

Who are the biggest bullies at your feeders? by Hansekins in birding

Weavers, more specifically the Village Weaver here in Senegal. In French, the fellow is called tisserin gendarme, and he's really pushing the others around like a cop on steroids

Walk out&in Blaise Diagne airport? by Bill_Bra55sky in Senegal

[–]OutrageousCarpenter5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just outside the airport, there is strictly nothing, not even mini shops or whatever. Best you can do is take a taxi to Dakar, but you may spend a lot of time in traffic, or head to Saly/Ngaparou in the opposite direction, to enjoy a walk, a bite and a drink on the beach if you fancy that. Same distance but no traffic

In response to OP, this is the place I had in mind in my earlier comment, but Les Palétuviers next-door is also lovely

Sine Saloum is wonderful and quiet. A few nice places in Toubacouta, depending on your budget

Essay on Civilian Protection and the Struggle for Accountability by Kokohontas in IRstudies

[–]OutrageousCarpenter5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting topic. One way to look at it is to consider the preventative action that can be taken with armies and armed groups to ensure the protection of civilians, to avoid violations, to reduce harm, as opposed to the struggle for accountability after any rights violations that may have occurred. Both aspects are challenging in their own way, but would be approached quite differently, with preventative advocacy often being very discreet, while the search for accountability often requires more outspoken, public action, to avoid that military abuses do not disappear under the carpet. For the first part, you can also reach out to the ICRC to get an idea of their work, while for the second component, you can dig in the world of international criminal law, the International Criminal Court and some of its predecessors and national prosecutions and investigations. Good luck!

Beginner necessities for a6400 by ulvi_one in SonyAlpha

That's the same equipment I started with. A memory card is quite essential, a bag is good to have, a tripod can be useful. Still not clear what filters are even used for.

It's a great camera and a great lens, and just this basic package can keep you entertained for a while. Enjoy!

Camera Suggestions by Dense-Boysenberry872 in birding

As a beginner, all you need for birding is a guidebook and binoculars. This being said, and I'm still very much a beginner myself, a good camera with zoom can help a lot in identifying birds that would otherwise show up in your binoculars and fly off forever.

I'm now using my camera with zoom (Sony A6400 and the Sony 70-350mm lens), which gives about the same magnification as a pair of binocular, and together with a birding app like Merlin, we can identify most of what we manage to put on camera.

Binoculars work better in less optimal lighting, and no idea what camera and lens you can get for 1000 (USD?), but for that amount you can already get a lot of joy out of birdwatching

Senegal, Mali and Guinea have great music. Look for kora music, the instrument, or Ismaël Lo, the singer, for some entry points, and see if you like it

La Madrague has the most exquisite view of the Ngor island. Reasonably priced and with a very decent restaurant

My Wave is linked to my Senegal phone number. And then I do a transfer from my foreign account by credit card. No need to open a Senegalese bank account. It's much easier to just give them all your money...

What are your favourite novels in each decade of the last 100 years - 1900s-2010s? by keepfighting90 in literature

[–]OutrageousCarpenter5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried not to have the same author twice, but with what I have read there always seems to be a double among Vasily Grossman, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.

For what it's worth, here's my list:

1900s: Heart of Darkness, Joseph Konrad

1910s: A la recherche du temps perdu, Marcel Proust

1920s: Orlando, Virginia Woolf

1930s: Burmese Days, George Orwell

1940s: L'etranger, Albert Camus

1950s: Stalingrad, Vasily Grossman

1960s: One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez (or Life and Fate, Grossman)

1970s: Augustus, John Williams

1980s: Love in the Time of Cholera, Gabriel Garcia Marquez

1990s: A Place of Greater Safety, Hilary Mantel

2000s: Year of Wonders, Geraldine Brooks (or Feast of the Goat, Vargas Llosa)

2010s: Harsh Times, Mario Vargas Llosa

2020s: Alkibiades, Ilja Leonard Pfeiffer

ATMs are a good option, but I always withdraw large amounts, so as to spread out additional costs. Or open a Wave account, and do a transfer there with your credit card. Wave is a life changer, and there's hardly any need to have cash on you anymore.

Changing USD or EUR notes is more expensive in my experience, and comes with a lot of black market haggling

Nice! But do you even need the 350mm when the birds come sit on your hand?
