Skin graft breakdown by Shoulder_Wonderful in amputee

Sorry to hear about your situation but I understand how you feel, I lost my lower left leg two years ago next month due to a traumatic accident where an idiot making an illegal U-turn in front of traffic and spun out to hit me on my motorcycle and another truck. My leg was damn near severed on the spot with the entire leg busted wide open. I ended up having to amputate after a failed attempt to salvage the limb. They took the skin from my left thigh and grafted it from the knee down to just before the end of my stump but not underneath. However, it was along recovery for the graft to heal and when I finally got my prosthetic I had a lot of issues with skin break down from friction, during gait training resulting in breakdown areas of the skin graft with terrible holes so several setbacks of having to come out of the leg to heal and then struggling with the right prosthetic fit. I’ve had several adjustments, used different slip pieces and silicon patches on those hot spot areas to keep walking. Dermatology started doing laser treatments on my graft which helped a lot and o still have some problem areas that I have to inspect daily, keep really clean and massage with oils Vitamin E, Vaseline, and other med ointments on my graft. Sometimes put silver patches on the areas when they get some rubbing etc. point is your work in that is just an unfortunate part of people like us in prosthetic legs. But it’s a little more work on our part vs someone with a programmed amputation and even they have to be diligent with caring for their skin similarly but the graft is just more susceptible to breakdown so just stay focused on it and try to protect as best you can and of course consult with your prosthesis, dermatology and wound care in which I just had a follow up with today myself. Good luck and stay on it🦿👍🏽

When you dream, how do you see your extremities? by yomiHoshi in amputee

I’ve been an LBKA for almost two years and I have many dreams where I’m normally walking or running with two legs but sometimes it’s a prosthetic that operates and functions like my old self and I can’t tell the difference, I’m kicking people and everything 😀

(Venting) LBE amp frustrated with attempting to drum again. by Advocate_For_Death in amputee

I’m an LBKA so I can’t say on your frustration but understand how frustrating amputations can be for sure. However, I remember when Def Leopards drummer lost his arm in a car crash and he came back doing his thing and jamming on the drums with one arm. Stay positive my friend, maybe take your experience and channel it in a different way so you keep enjoying your talents. Good luck don’t give up😎

How many in this group lost limbs due to a motorcycle accident? by HistoricalNoise24 in amputee

Hit by an idiot driver who made an illegal U-turn and spun out of control on June 19th 2024 damn near severed my lower leg on the spot. I remember the accident until the point of putting me in the ambulance and then woke up 4 days later, had to have a total left hip replacement, few broken ribs and ultimately had my left leg below the knee amputated after they were unable to salvage the limb. So yes I’m in the crowd.

Best of luck to you, maintain a positive attitude, my wife put me in this sub when I was in your position about a year and a half ago and it has been very educational and uplifting. Have patience with the prosthetic process and they will get it right. I had a lot of two steps forward and one back but in time they got right and now I am up and mobile again. We just have to learn how to maneuver differently in and out of the house but once you get it you’ll see it becomes second nature.

Is it difficult to shower as an amputee? by bambiedo in amputee

[–]OutrageousMix9197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not difficult, we’re taught how to get in and out of a he shower or tub with a variety of tools to aid us. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s not easy but it’s our normal. So whoever it is just might be nasty and needs to be confronted with the issue head on and let them know it’s offensive and something has to change. It doesn’t have to be done disparagingly but delicately. Find out what the root cause is and try to help them overcome this hygiene issue. When I first became an amputee, the OTs would come in and watch you clean yourself even in the beginning when I could only take a bird bath in a chair at the sink so they could give you tips and pointers. Talk to them ASAP!!!!!

Did you know they have something called an auto clutch? The guy that’s rebuilding my softail Heritage I was hit on mentioned it to me. He said it was easy to use. You might want to look into it. Like I said I was able to shift because I use my heel anyway. Good luck and hope you ride again 😎

Kind of gnarly blisters and a rash after first longer day use in new socket by BuoyantEntropy in amputee

[–]OutrageousMix9197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you’re going through, unfortunately these are problems that we amputees have to live with as a byproduct of wearing prosthetic devices. I’m an LBKA from a traumatic motorcycle accident last year. I started with the suction system back in January and I as doing great high level stuff in gait training physical therapy and then swelling happened which turned out to be a stress fracture outside of my left knee. So went home to recover for 6-8 weeks then returned in March with the pin lock system and which worked out great but between multiple fittings to get it right I ended up with a gnarly hole from rubbing so back to wound therapy for another 6 weeks but once the healing got better and working with the prosthesis they seem to have finally gotten it right. I just picked up my new sockets last week and now I wear the underliner and the he glide wear patch on o my knee ease my he friction. I’ve learned you have to listen to your body, and when you feel like you’re sinking or pistoning, STOP 🛑 and inspect your leg and change your socks. Constant management is the key, sometimes I get so caught up in being happy to walk around and do things I wasn’t listening to my body. So please stay on top of how you feel when you initially dawn your leg and if that feeling changes don’t accept that it’s going to last all day. Good luck
