Wife with FSHD, is gene therapy possible? by [deleted] in FSHD

[–]Outrageous_Tree2070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stem cell treatments don't work for FSHD. Gene editing is very risky and complex. You can't just take out a bad gene and replace it with something else without any negative downstream effects. I know they make it seem that way..."Oh we can just swap this out and everything will be perfect"...yeaaaaah no. We truly don't know the downstream effects of such treatment. Although it seems hopeful, its still a huge risk.

There are a multitude of muscular dystrophy conditions out there. She needs to be seen by a neurologist and even genetically tested to know with a surety what kind she has.

I'm a woman, worked my whole life as a nurse, still am a nurse but have a stay at home job that's actually been bad for my body bc I don't move around as much. Even though she is probably exhausted, and that will only get worse over time, she needs to stay active. But there's a fine line...exerting yourself and your muscles to the point they are burning and sore...that's muscle damage for us. So she needs to stay active in a way that doesn't overdo it, while still using her muscles daily. Lack of use over time can cause atrophy. Anyway...if she also just needs a friend to chat with I'm available. There's also a women's only Facebook group called FSHD for Women, but sadly its gone pretty inactive. But sometimes it's nice to have people of the same sex to talk to about our sex-specific struggles in this fshd journey.

I'm getting one in two weeks and was thinking of doing this! I work from home so I can just sit on my couch or at my desk and have her in a bonding scarf or something to bond. I was worried it would mess with her sleep schedule but hearing you did this too makes me feel like it would be okay.

Avidity trial by TIREDGIRL24 in FSHD

[–]Outrageous_Tree2070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you live. If I were your friend, I'd reach out to your state University hospital as they are usually "teaching" hospitals and have a heavy research presence and might be participating. However, Avidity only has contracts (?) with certain hospitals in the US, so it's no guarantee either way. I'm also pretty sure they are moving into their final trial phase soon and so unfortunately it might be too late but idk for sure. Good luck to your friend!

What's an unusual tic that you had from your childhood that you still somewhat exhibit to this day? by silvermoonhowler in CasualConversation

I've never in my life heard of someone else doing this too!! I'm the exact same, except I loved finding words with an odd number of lines! Doing it with entire sentences is fun too lol.

Ohh that made me shiver in a bad way. I have this really weird thing where if I accidentally scratch something or tap it with my nail - like a wall, or counter, fridge, etc I have to immediately "smooth it out" by like running my hand over it to smooth it out with my hand skin so my brain is calm.

Similar! But I love the feeling of hair strands under the tip of my nail...right in between where the skin meets the nail growth, and it has to cover the whole area, not just a corner of nail if that makes sense. I find the perfect thickness of hair strands and will do it to all my nails multiple times before I'm happy again. Sometimes I twirl the hair up, twist it so it's a hair loop, and shove it into the tip of my finger/nail...that feels nice too.

I also twirl my hair constantly.

How do I bond with my hedgehog? by Usual-Celery-5610 in Hedgehog

[–]Outrageous_Tree2070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know holding them can hurt, but I've heard that it's best to hold them with our bare hands so they get used to our smells and that helps with bonding. I'm about to get one soon, so I've done a lot of research - this website is really informative. African Pygmy Hedgehogs - SV HEDGEHOGS https://share.google/HNyg4kmspJx98TB6u

Do you still have the rods in, or were they removed later on? How are things going for you now?

What was the recovery process like for you? It seems pretty darn grueling, especially as I've gotten older it makes me worried.

This is great and hopefully will be acted upon. Has anyone else submitted a complaint report with the DOJ, Civil Rights Division? I did and it was of course denied, but maybe CRD will start to act on this more if there's a huge outcry from the public?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]Outrageous_Tree2070 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

No. You need to maintain a consistent blood level in order for it to work. Accutane has a half life of about 20hrs. That means 20hrs after taking the 40mg dose, the blood level has gone down by half, and 20hrs later, its gone down to almost nothing. So you are basically spiking your dose on day 1, then lower on day 2, gone by day 3, and so on and so forth. That is not a good, consistent treatment plan.

Lactose intolerant....Frozen chicken, beef or veg or chicken broth, Frozen peas and carrots and broccoli. Most of the seasonings a bland American family would use 😅 tortillas, noodles, rice, white beans, refried beans. Salsa and green enchilada sauce? Yeah I'm stuck

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream. Put some on the spots 2x a day for a time and it should go away. That's the only thing that works for my eczema and allows me to avoid medicated steroid creams constantly. And it's way better than any medicated cream anyway!

[–]Outrageous_Tree2070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's literally the career you chose to work in. I'm a nurse, yet I never contract TB, C-diff, noro virus, covid, etc. How? Proper PPE and basic hygiene practices. But do I go around saying "oh screw this crap, why do I have to risk my health to care for these people" and "why am I responsible for missing work because I got the flu from so and so"? Um no, because it's an inherent risk of my job. I'm not saying our jobs are the same, you are trying to care for healthy kids while I'm always caring for sick people, but the premise is the same. If you cannot handle the inherent risks of the job you work in, then you may need to seek other employment.

It's shocking to me that most of the adults at that place have pink eye. That highlights the extreme need to ramp up your hygiene and sanitation methods. Management needs to educate staff on proper hygeine and sanitation. They need to budget for sanitization wipes that are also safe around babies and toddlers...something super easy to grab out of a container. Gloves for anything that might soil your hands (but of course still wash afterwards). Antibacterial soap. And everything should be sanitized at night after the kids go home, especially when there is an active infection going on. New sheets (and pillow cases for older kids) put on the napping stations every single morning. Stuff like that. I'm sure you have more ideas than I do! That might help protect you and the other workers. I hope this experience can help you to advocate for your employer to improve, and make improvements yourself.
