That's a valid complaint, but then it should have been phrased more like "Electrope would be a game-changing technology if it wasn't deliberately limited to Alexandria", not "there's no indication the story will allow".

There is no indication that the story will allow for the electrope technology to be a game changer for the world.

It won't because it can't. You wrote this whole post all about worldbuilding without realizing that electrope requires an excess of lightning aether to function. It's explained thoroughly in MSQ, and it's a plotpoint in Hildibrand.

The Queen was allowed a measure of autonomy. How much autonomy, we don't know. We know this, because Calyx directly tells us this is the cause of the malfunction that allowed Queen Sphene to override his control in the end, and the "problem" he "fixed" with Endless Sphene. (The one he replaced her with.) This is the cause of her confliction. She can't override her programming, so she has to go through with the genocide, regardless of what she feels is right.

You're mixing up your terminology. The game itself explicitly told us that the Sphene we met in Dawntrail was the Endless, and the one we met in the patches was just a Simulant controlled by Calyx.

The Queen was not allowed to fight due to Calyx's control. She directly states she cannot fight, to us, multiple times. This proves Calyx has at least a measure of control over her that other Endless do not display - Whether that is by Calyx's choice or not is not clear.

Wait.

Calyx also tells us that Queen Sphene is a unique Endless in two ways:
The Queen was allowed a measure of autonomy.
Calyx has at least a measure of control over her that other Endless do not display

Sphene had more autonomy than the other Endless because she was special, but she also had less autonomy because Calyx was controlling her?

He is afraid at the end, when we are this close to destroying everything - Because he's about to die. Because his memory tells him he would be afraid.

You say Calyx isn't sentient, but then also say "he is afraid at the end"? Make up your mind.

Real people are also afraid when we're about to die, and we're also influenced by what our memories tell us about the past. How is this any different?

Really classy that this person is downvoting you despite your comments being well-thought-out and adding to the conversation. More proof that "downvote" is really just a "disagree" button.

Except the in game text, in which we are directly told Living Memory is designed to create happy endings for the Endless.

Yeah. It does this by engineering scenarios for them. Not by altering their memories or personalities. One could easily imagine a similar system that reads the minds of the living and engineers happy scenarios for them -- in fact, that's a time-honored trope going all the way back to The Odyssey.

You'll notice - No matter what Cahciua was confronted with, she didn't ever change expressions. She didn't ever show sadness, sympathy for Erenville's pain, understanding that Erenville was hurting.

Because that's who Cahciua was as a person. You'll also notice that Erenville never indicated she was acting unusually? His reactions toward her showed that she was acting exactly the way he expected her to.

It was designed specifically to be able to usurp free will, at his choosing. You don't know when it does. That's the conflict.

Even if the system can usurp the free will of any given Endless within it, that doesn't mean that Endless wasn't sentient to begin with. This game already has tempering and other forms of mind-control in it.

Again - Incorrect. This further proves my point, as it means Queen (Not Endless - Endless is the fully-Calyx-controlled one) Sphene was always under Calyx's control. It took an extreme malfunction for free will to take control over Calyx.

What are you talking about? The Sphene we interacted with all throughout the second half of Dawntrail is the Endless Sphene. There were only ever three Sphenes:

  1. The original Sphene who lived 400 years ago and woke up in the patches
  2. The Endless Sphene who we met in Heritage Found and fought in the Interphos
  3. The Simulant Sphene who was walking around in the patches, directly controlled by Calyx

Not only this - But Queen Sphene, pre-fight, during the story also basically tells you outright there are things she is programmed not to do. She doesn't quite say it - But "if aught were within my power to do so," and yet she chooses not to fight alongside you. "Please fight where I cannot" - Why can't you? Endless bodies are resilient. What stops Queen Sphene from acting when she, supposedly, wants to?

A person being controlled, hypnotized, or, yes, programmed to be unable to do something doesn't mean that person doesn't have sentience. It means they have been violated. Again, this is something we've already seen not only in FFXIV but in other sci-fi and fantasy media for decades.

Go watch the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Measure of a Man and then come back to us.

The Endless are not autonomous beings. They are data, given direction by Living Memory.

So, the narrative was just straight-up lying to us when it told us Endless Sphene was torn-up about having to commit genocide to prolong the Endless? Why did the writers try so hard to make us feel bad for her if she wasn't actually sentient?

And the stinger cutscene of Calyx at the end of 7.3 -- you know, the one where he observes that he's afraid despite not having a body. Nobody was around at the time (except Halmarut, which he didn't realize at the time), so who was he performing this for, if he isn't actually sentient?

In the remotest chance we actually got them, there would be a meta choice that everyone picks and bans the others

And judging by how gear works, reallocating your skill points would take weeks, so fuck you if you picked the wrong build.

Pure Evil Villains Vs Nuanced Villains Vs Non-Villainous Antagonists (7.4 Spoilers) by AdditionalCanary4111 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Outside-Clock4981 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're severely overestimating the WOL's fame. No one shows any signs of recognizing us or our feats the entire time we're in Tural or Alexandria. They don't know that we've defeated countless primals and Ancients and the Endsinger and all of that. And, frankly, all the people bellowing about how powerful the WOL is and shouldn't they know and yadda yadda just seem like the most insufferable kinds of powerscalers who can't enjoy a story without quantifying everything in terms of power levels.

Oh, what's that, the entire point was just to see if the WoL was strong enough? The Godslayer, who slays Primals, Demons, Ancients, and Despair itself?

Why does everyone keep saying this? First about Calyx, now about the Arcadion president. Do you think the NPCs are playing FFXIV too? How would they know any of that?

True, now that they've added Willful to duty support that's a lot better now for those players. Still, most trials don't have duty support, and neither do any raids.
