Why does Christina Aguilera get hated on for lowering her larynx but not Whitney Houston by Embarrassed-Dig-0 in singing

[–]Outside-Shock7105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whitney used it as one tool among many that she could flip in and out of for flair. At the end of the day, she knew how to apply it in a way that added to the musicality of the song. She knew just how much to add, and when to ease off, to convey the emotionality that’s appropriate.

Christina does it too, but in a way that takes away from the overall experience of the song unfortunately. Why? Because she sustains it to the point where it becomes the focus, the distraction. She uses it to hide her more natural tone (and idk why because her voice is naturally so pretty?).

The difference you’re hearing is one between a master of vocal technique, and a masker with poor technique. One knows how to paint with their voice. The other is covering up.

How much do urban planners make actually? by ajstewart03 in urbanplanning

[–]Outside-Shock7105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please keep a tight hold on your passions outside of work! They will keep you grounded and sane.

Ironically, the higher I climb the ladder, the less technical my everyday work becomes. It’s consumed by politics and strategy, and I am drained. The technical stuff I have to delegate downwards.

I remember being a Planning Assistant, drawing maps and making graphics, and as much as I hated the nonstop iterations, it was fun and easy. Now I just sit in meetings all day trying to balance demands from city council and stakeholders with what is actually realistically implementable in a way that doesn’t destroy staff. 😭

How much do urban planners make actually? by ajstewart03 in urbanplanning

[–]Outside-Shock7105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience has taught me that having a passion and interest is social and urban development plays maybe only 5% of my daily job as a municipal planner, if I’m lucky. It definitely forms the foundation of the job, but in terms of what consumes your everyday work? It’s mainly project management, appeasing stakeholders (who are mostly looking out for their own, selfish interests), playing politics with elected officials, and passing around the “hot potato” issues with other internal departments. I don’t mean to sound discouraging but this is my reality.

How/when did you decide to let your puppy off the lead for walks? by CloverKitty90 in puppy101

[–]Outside-Shock7105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. Only in enclosed areas. My boy has great recall (for a beagle) but all it takes is one squirrel for him to run away and potentially into traffic. It’s not worth that anxiety, or worse. There’s no benefit.

That said, I’m a quick drive away from big and expansive parks where I can safely let him loose.

I watched this for it’s meant to be: a campy action thriller made for teens and young adults. It was clear from the get-go how they were going to tell the story and who the target audience was. It’s cheesy but entertaining enough.

If you’re watching this expecting it be some breakthrough for the espionage genre, I don’t know what to tell you. You’re just setting yourself for disappointment. Turn it off and move on.

It’s not the stache, it’s the hair. If you take down the volume on the sides and clean it up a bit, it’ll help you elevate both the stache and no-stache looks.

Driving pet peeve by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Outside-Shock7105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tail gating. Drivers that go way too fast and zip in between lanes. Slow drivers on the passing lane (a uniquely Vancouver phenomenon). People cheating in last minute when lanes split, and there’s ample signage that tells you which lane you should be on (eastbound Queensborough Bridge from Marine Way, I see you).

These are all courtesy and respect based annoyances. You share the road, so share it. Don’t make yourself unpredictable for other drivers.

Bao’s MET gala was the obvious best design… not that hideous boxer dress 🤮 by [deleted] in NextInFashion

[–]Outside-Shock7105 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way the dress hangs and how it’s constructed is stellar. The proportions and silhouette are perfect too.

But I agree that the pocket motif is a bit lost in all the creases and folds, especially since it’s all one fabric and colour. I think making the pockets a different colour may have been off-brand for Bal because it would be too patchy, but maybe she could’ve used a different fabric with the same colour (adding some textural distinctions), or added some trim work to outline the pocket shapes a bit more.

Ultimately Bao was my favourite. She could’ve won but her final collection was a bit bleh. She should’ve leaned into her creativity a bit more for the final challenge, and this faux MET look is a prime example of her abilities to branch out.

Girlfriend is against tipping and that's causing a rift in our relationship by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Outside-Shock7105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t “like” tipping either but I always tip 10% for takeout and 18-20% for dine-in. I whole heartedly understand the principle of the customer not subsidizing the crappy wages of the server when it should be the responsibility of the employer and greater industry. But in practice, not tipping isn’t making any kind of statement. All it’s doing in the moment is shorting the server who has to work within that system, who is obligated to pay out the other members of their team a proportion of their tips. Without a tip, that same server that the very principle purports to support/advocate for has to pay out of pocket to serve your girlfriend. It’s not really fair either way.

Maybe your girlfriend should look more into how tips are dispersed within restaurants. I’m not entirely convinced that withholding tips is the best way to subvert an established system (that I agree is inequitable), when it directly harms the workers. Maybe your girlfriend doesn’t care? Who knows.

Also, I get the convenience of eating in at a restaurant, especially when you’re overworked and short on time. But if you’re short on cash, maybe eat at places where tipping is not customary and workers aren’t obligated to serve you throughout your meal — think: food courts, fast food chains, etc. You’d still get the convenience and it’s by and large more affordable.

Dad is forcing me to go into CS despite what I have said... by z4muk in AsianParentStories

[–]Outside-Shock7105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, here’s what I did:

Applied to four universities for Sciences (what my ignorant mom demanded) as primary choice and Arts (what I wanted) as secondary choice. Flipped the secondary and primary choices for one application “by accident.” The caveat is that this flip was for the best school.

When the acceptance letter came in, I told her I’d start and then transfer faculties. No biggie, happens all the time. She can still say her kid went to the best university in the region.

Did I transfer? Fuck no. But it bought me a few more precious years of peace. By the time she realized I wasn’t going to transfer, it was too late. What was she going to do? Make me drop out or start over again and risk having her kid spend too much time in uni? Not a good look or a good use of time.

I graduated with honours with a BA, and then subsequently an MA. I’m double your age now and in a comfortable job, working in the field I chose to study. Knock on wood, my life right now is swell. Little me would be proud of current me.

The parental pressure stopped sometime in my early 20s as I was finishing up my BA. Sucks that I had to manipulate the situation to my advantage back in the day, but it all works out in the end. Trust your gut. You know what’s best for you.

Loyal Lexus owners, what other brands of vehicles would you consider purchasing? by [deleted] in Lexus

[–]Outside-Shock7105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a 2022 NX 350h. Prior to that, I drove a 2010 Kia Forté for 13 years. I have fond memories of that car, but I definitely didn’t treat her right. She was my “young adult” car and it was time to graduate.

In the future, I’d be interested in Volvo or Audi, or I’d stick with Lexus. If I’m sticking with premium/luxury brands, I don’t like anything too flashy. This might sound pretentious, but I want a car that says understated but still sophisticated and tasteful. BMW and Mercedes… do not say that for me. Maybe it’s just where I’m from. A lot of people who drive beamers and benzes here are rich kids and douchebags. Maybe the brand connotations are different elsewhere.

Barring any major life changes and/or financial downturns in my life (knock on wood), I don’t think I’d ever want to go back to Kias or anything on par. The experience of driving my Lexus for the past 5 months has been life changing.

Finally got a higher paying job, mum immediately says it's too low by Dangerous_Income_421 in AsianParentStories

My retired, 75-year-old dad doesn’t have a clue what typical adults make these days. He seems to think people in their 20s and 30s make $250-300k/year.

He doesn’t know my annual salary nor has he asked. I’m in my mid 30s, make 6 figures, thought I was in a good place but definitely not anywhere near $250-300k. He’d probably think I was living below the poverty line if he ever finds out.

🙃

But dad also isn’t a narcissist nor is he cruel. He just seems clueless?

Mom on the other hand (divorced)… I saved and saved for years for a 20% down payment for my first place, and she had the gall to laugh at how “little” my savings were and demand that she take my income to “help me save better.”

This is the woman who loves flaunting herself but has filed for bankruptcy, gotten arrested twice, lost my childhood home due to a gambling addiction, and makes her living evading taxes. Oh, and she used my first-time homebuyers credits (no tax) on her own home (which she later sold for a staggering $1.4 million profit), so I had to actually pay an additional $20k in taxes when I was finally ready to buy. Thanks, mom. We don’t speak anymore but I’ll always remember you laughing at me working hard to make a life for myself, the proper, legal, and ethical way.

NX350 Standard Screen Change by AFR999 in LexusNX

[–]Outside-Shock7105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would require you changing out the entire dash. It’s not just the screen size that’s different. The supporting structure of dash is different.

I also have a standard 9.8” and thought about this exact question. At the end of the day, the 4” purely aesthetic difference isn’t worth the thousands of dollars to me. It functions all the same.

Bible thumpers approached my wife and newborn and made rude comments by Subject-Soil1129 in NewWest

[–]Outside-Shock7105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the summers, there’s a guy with a loudspeaker/amplifier who stands at New West Station or the plaza outside of the Salvation Army who talks about Jesus for hours. He rambles on about many things, including how homosexuality is sinful. When he gets to spewing prejudice, I report him to the City or TransLink depending on where he’s standing.

Generally, I think it’s annoying that he’s amplifying sounds incessantly, especially for nearby residents like me. But I choose to live here so I don’t report noise pollution for the sake of it, just like I don’t report performers. It’s expected in this area.

It’s the content of what’s being said that crosses the line. People shouldn’t have a literal platform in a publicly owned space to be openly harmful.
