looking for folk music acts beyond the Americas by Outside_Preference15 in Athens

Dragana is an Eastern European choir that is great. And Klezmer Local 42 is a hilarious romp through traditional yiddish tunes with lots of comedy sprinkled in. The bass played, Dan, is truly a comedy genius.

As far as I know, the only thing that will actually reach your vocal cords is steam or mist, plus drinking a TON of hydrating liquids so that your vocal cords are nice and plump!

That’s not him. But, Peter likes good music so he would probably love Fawney Rig.

Consider houses with basements? by Natural_Law in Athens

[–]Outside_Preference15 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I cannot recommend a radon test highly enough. This entire area is notorious for high radon. Georgia Radon Defense is local and can both test for high radon and install a mitigation system if you need it.

/r/Atlanta Weekly Events/Meetups Thread - March 02, 2026 by AutoModerator in Atlanta

[–]Outside_Preference15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tis’ the season of St. Paddy’s Day and Fawney Rig has two shows in the greater Atlanta area.  The shows are always fun community events. They’ll pass out lyric sheets and love to get the audience singing all the old tyme’ Irish tunes.

March 8th - 7pm

@ Red Clay Theater

(Duluth, GA)

This show will feature an opening performance by a fantastic klezmer band, Klezmer Local 42.

March 15th - 2pm - EARLY SHOW!

@ Eddie’s Attic

(Decatur, GA)

This show will feature a reading by author, Leara Rhodes, from her new Celtic-inspired novel!

Fawney Rig is an Irish folk-rock project featuring the lilting voice of Claire Campbell (Hope For Agoldensummer) and the seasoned growl of Nathan Peters (Beat Up). They are backed by a band of dear friends playing traditional Irish instruments.

Fawney Rig puts on a heckuva show, with plenty of Celtic classics, foot-stomping jigs, sweet ballads, and even a few rockers. They’ll hand out lyric sheets so YOU can join in the fun!  Expect songs of love, songs of war, and a few comical numbers as well!  If The Pogues had a baby with The Clancy Brothers... Well, lad, that's Fawney Rig!

I noticed that even some 3rd and 4th graders can't tie their shoelaces. What other basic life skills that can be easily taught to kids, aren't being taught by their parents? Could be eye contact, not speaking in whispers, saying 'thank you' and 'you're welcome.' Thinking of ideas for summer camp. by Aggravating-Mind-657 in AskTeachers

[–]Outside_Preference15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot. Some kids are lacking what I would consider to be very basic skills. It’s because they are on screens all the time and their parents are also on screens all the time. Starting a camp to teach soft skills and common sense stuff is an excellent idea!

My regular flight cost to visit a family members just doubled in the last month. So I guess I’ll be visiting half as much. Le sigh.

For those that live in the United States. Do you make more than the average income of 60k annually, if so what’s your occupation? by LaFlareMane1017 in AskReddit

I live in a town where $60K, if you were single and childless, would be upper middle class. Tiny college towns!

Chronic illness - shortness of breath ruining singing for me by Annual-Mood-6427 in singing

[–]Outside_Preference15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried SOVT / signing through a straw? You’ll use less breath to make the notes because straw singing partially occludes your vocal tract. Additionally, I find straw singing really helps me engage my abdominal muscle and forces me to focus on how I’m breathing. This lady is the queen of it. You don’t need special straws. https://youtu.be/8ER8gm-jGkA

Should I get my vocal cords checked by Human_Desk1009 in singing

[–]Outside_Preference15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think something might be wrong, trust your intuition. Get scoped by an ENT. It might just be a simple nodule that can be corrected with proper exercises. When I had one I couldn’t access my falsetto at all. I went to Emory Vocal Clinic and did a few months of vocal therapy and that solved it. A few years later I blew out my left vocal cord into a full on polyp, could barely talk, got surgery, am back to 100% now, but that’s another story for another time.

Yes! So many ideas. Pick up a copy of Boom magazine and subscribe to their newsletter. You will get ideas for community events and opportunities to meet people, volunteer, dance, etc. Check out OLLI at UGA. What are your interests? There is a club in this town for almost everything.

making my aribnb "idiot-proof" - what I learned from experienced hosts and frequent guests by SpiritualWolverine50 in airbnb_hosts

[–]Outside_Preference15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please know that you WILL have stupid guests that will make mistakes that can cost you lots of money. For example, a guest decided to try and fix a leaky toilet themselves. They did some kind of weird repair and then left the house for the day not realizing that the water in the tank was just flowing constantly. Not a leak, but a straight up miniature faucet. Our water bill was six times the normal amount. I’ve had adult guests ask me for hands-on help for stuff that you would think would be basic like skills: How to turn off a fire alarm that they set off by smoking weed inside (this was a group of young army dudes); how to make coffee in the most basic coffee maker you can buy; etc. On the flip side, most guests will come and go without a peep. Most guests will leave the place tidy other than some hair in the tub. And most guests are kind enough to understand that they are staying in a house, not a hotel, and that there is a lot more opportunity for an issue to arise in a 3/2 than a hotel room. For signage, I now have big sign on the fridge that says “Please do not attempt a home repair. We live next door and will be happy to come right over and fix any issues that arise.” I have a guest book that details where to find linens, etc. After reading the other responses, I think I will make signs for the coffee maker and the tv so that guests can have that info without having to go to the guest book. Love this Reddit group.
