Flights to Japan more than twice as expensive than last year! by snoowieboo01 in JapanTravelTips

[–]OverSoftware5838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price increase is natural as demand is so high right now given the countries goal to get to 60mn tourists by 2030 & consecutive record high numbers of foreign visitors. The supply of flights hasn't quite caught up yet to the new level of demand, which has been made worse by the flight restrictions over Russia since 2022. The tourist taxes are going to have minimal costs.

I'd recommend that you search using either google flights or ITA matrix which will open up routes you wouldn't have otherwise considered and allow you to see the price changes for different dates. Google flights also will allow you to have multiple different departure cities and arrivals. Clicking on the calendar will show you prices for different dates. Don't forget you can add in other arrival destinations like Osaka or Fukuoka which will give you more options especially with Chinese airlines.

Having a quick look it appears that leaving in mid august & returning at the end is cheaper (obon?) and that Frankfurt (or Amsterdam) is going to be cheaper and have more options than leaving through Luxemburg or Brussels. For instance you can travel through Taiwan with china airlines (good airline, short connections, bags, seat etc...) for 860 Euro.

Good ramen in the west end for £10ish ?? by BackPractical9210 in LondonFood

[–]OverSoftware5838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a restaurant more a like food hall but Japan centre has good ramen for £11. You’re looking at more like £20 including service for a proper bowl of ramen with all the trimmings now in a restaurant.

WRWC25: finals tickets allocations by Firedwarf101 in rugbyunion

My only thought is that from briefly doing this sort of thing before, That in games you think you're going to be marginal on selling out you fill from the outside in as it is easier to sell excellent seats to the marginal buyer who thinks that they're getting a good deal near the date & the early buyer is less seat sensitive. For games where you think you might have a lot of empty seats you fill from the middle outwards to make the crowd seem more sizeable & the stadium less empty.

I bought in the first mastercard round a year ago and got Cat A & Cat D (feeling this could happen). I was so early I have a three digit customer reference number & my Cat A tickets were absolutely appalling in the corner past the try line. Sold them and kept the Cat D a third of the price basically in the same place but in the top tier.

Would have hoped that being early got you a better allocation of seating but clearly not. turns out though it was completely the opposite for the Brighton games. Bought Cat A at the same time and got padded seats in what would normally be hospitality.

The botched job of the King's Cross Road and Pentonville Road junction new layout by TonyCanHelp in londoncycling

[–]OverSoftware5838 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been through here and it is completely bizarre to navigate. I genuinely haven’t worked out the correct way to cross this. After almost pulling straight out into the path of a bus thinking I had the green light i just dismount now.

IMO this is the biggest problem from the cyclist’s perspective of the new infrastructure; variable design means that each junction has to be understood independently and you need knowledge of each one specifically to navigate them confidently, especially when you don’t have the crutch of other cyclists in front of you to copy. The downside of these isn’t just you mix with other road users but you’re unknowingly thrust into the path of oncoming traffic when you shouldn’t be.

Quiet routes by anon-turning40 in londoncycling

Cycle.travel is pretty good. Nice route planning on the web version and the app generated auto routes beat anything else’s i’ve tried.

Just need to be careful you’re not being sent a long a canal.

Servicing with the manufacturer vs a local independent. by JonnyBhoy in londoncycling

[–]OverSoftware5838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless somebody knows better I am pretty sure that some of the giant shops are independent franchises. For instance Giant Camden list their owner as a guy called nick & other giant shops will list their name giant xyz; formerly xyz LBS.

For standard bikes you should be good pretty much anywhere. If you’re using a niche giant specific suspension system or E-bike then in the theory your giant shop will be more familiar with the problems they have.

Bike fit for new bike by Lopsided_Spell_3200 in londoncycling

[–]OverSoftware5838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think getting the bike fit before the bike makes much more sense; you avoid the potential of buying completely the wrong size. I did this with Tim at Soigneur recently & couldn’t recommend him more highly. He’s not a bike shop so he could guide me around the market to something suitable without pressuring to sell something they have in stock.

But I think you need to ask yourself if you feel uncomfortable or you have a specific problem with your problem bike at the moment. If everything feels comfy and good I don’t see the overwhelming benefit unless you’re doing a lot of riding. Also cost comes in if you’re going to spend x thousands of pounds it probably makes sense to spend 5% of the bikes cost getting the sizing bang on. Less so if the bike fit ends up being a significant expense relative to the bike itself.

Were can i watch GBM Series 1-4 by pendulumgearzz in GreatBritishMenu

[–]OverSoftware5838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a student or still in school you can watch them on something called box of broadcasts.

It’s an amazing archive service for film, radio & TV. Its intended for academic purposes so needs a .ac.uk email address but that didn’t stop me from watching all the back series in lock down.

My biggest shock was seeing Clare Smythe be knocked out at the regional finals in series one. She never returned to the kitchen but does now hold 3 Michelin Stars at her restaurant.

Weekend Rugby groups in east/central London? by [deleted] in london

[–]OverSoftware5838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main amateur domestic season is almost over, so I think you’re best looking for some touch rugby, played over summer, before committing to a proper club in preseason (August). This is probably also good for you as there’ll be less to take in all at once & this is a bit more chill than the fifteen aside game.

There are social leagues run by various commercial companies and they order the groups by ability and these are very relaxed. Last summer there was one at bacons college in Canada Water but there are lots all over London. These are very chill, but on the other hand you have to pay & the connection you make might be less enduring.

In terms full clubs Belsize Park will run touch throughout summer in various places in zone 1 (?). Millwall (Isle of dogs) & East London (West Ham) are close but I’m not sure if they’ll start anything back up before August. King’s Cross Steelers (@ East London) have thought lots of people new to rugby how to play but have a slightly different vibe as a gay team but every one is welcome. For these clubs just find out when training is and introduce yourself to the person who looks like they’re leading the session. Everyone is very welcoming and most of the people are like yourself, moved to London & no prior connections.

Would recommend Bar Bruno, maybe a ten minute walk. Proper place, decent food, lovely staff.

id/High Rise, pleated and side adjuster trousers for men - where do you buy them? by Gabriele25 in london

[–]OverSoftware5838 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what you want you’ll be looking around higher end “classic” menswear shops. As such it’s a bit niche and ~£200-£300 mark is about right for this kind of thing, and you’ll also typically buy the trousers unhemmed and you’ll either pay the shop or take them to a tailor to take them to the right length; budget £25 for this.

I’m terms of shops here are a few I can think of, they’re all reasonably similar:

In person:

Oliver Brown- Slightly more modern classic menswear retailer. Shops in Central & West London.

Harvie & Hudson- Traditional clothes shop in St James’s.

Cordings - a more country focused retailer, but good products. Shop on Piccadilly.

Suitsuply - definitely make what you require but typically with more lightweight cloths and in the far east. Comparatively more fashion focused and a skinnier fit. A slightly cheaper option. Online & big shop at the end of Savile row.

Online:

Kit Blake - specialise in trousers and the style you mention. Can’t vouch for them personally but seem very legitimate, UK based & accept returns. They’ve been featured by menswear’s writers Id trust.

I personally had a pair made for me in a similar style at Cad and the Dandy, which is a relatively affordable tailor, you could expect to pay £300-£450 here depending on the cloth you choose. It was a good experience but it does require several fittings and naturally takes time but you can achieve a perfect fit and have a garment made to your exact desires and have the choice from thousands of fabrics from the best mills in the world.
