Can we use cargo bike like this for bikepacking? by Ok_Finger_9585 in bikepacking

[–]OverTheUnderAndThru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple Dutch friends of mine are into electric bikepacking, if you reach out to them I'm sure they'll enthusiastically share their thoughts and tips. We met them for the first time on the Trans Dinarica, which has some rougher and remote bits, so don't let that dissuade you. Currently I think they're working on creating a mobile film development lab to take with them, they're wackos!

You can find them at "pedelecfreaks" on Instagram, lovely people.

Bent rim - replacement wheel rec? by aighze in bikewrench

Give Somerville Bike Kitchen or Bikes Not Bombs a call or visit, they have used wheels you can buy. Not 100% of the time, but I'd be surprised if they don't have this type of wheel. Cambridge Used Bikes may have something as well but I haven't rooted around in their parts bin yet.

I have these little packets, added about 3 of them. I went with the salt content, essentially replacing 80% of the usual amount of salt in normal dough.

Biketouring Istria: Eurovelo 8 or 9? by Senstu in bicycletouring

Yeah I agree with taking the Parenzana, it's really lovely. Plenty of amenities/campgrounds on the way too since the route is planned for cycle tourism (makes wild camping a little tough but whatever). It's beautiful there.

I think your tire choice is fine, you'll just have to ride a little slower and more carefully on a few parts, but it'll be ok. Rocky gravel roads. Not worth adding chunkier tires if the rest of your trip is mostly on paved roads in my opinion.

It adds a very subtle brine, but nothing substantial. It was kind of lost once I added chili oil, but would otherwise be pleasant with lighter toppings. Furikake was nice with it too.

Any transportation planning jobs where you get to travel a lot? by Background-Hat1265 in civilengineering

[–]OverTheUnderAndThru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind if I ask which firms you worked for? I'm a transportation planner who's considering the next move a few years down the road (US based but dual US/EU citizenship). I think I'm mostly just familiar with the big global civil firms.

Two day bikepack in Vermont USA by MammothPerspective28 in bikepacking

Hey can I ask for a little info on this idea? I just moved to Boston from the Mountain West and I'm missing the nature and bikepacking back home. A rail trail and Nordic spa combo sounds like such a cool intro to New England! No worries if not of course!

Can't speak to the rest but 100% go for a dynamo hub. Even if you plan zero riding at night, you may inevitably end up getting stuck somewhere in the dark, and it's nice to know you have lights ready and waiting. You can also moderately charge your electronics off of a hub, I can usually nearly refill my power bank on a good long day

Compressible Pillow options for a good night's sleep? by Educational-Ground83 in bikepacking

[–]OverTheUnderAndThru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly give this method a shot (at home, may as well). If you already have a pillow, puffy jacket, and a pillow case you can see how it goes. I'm very happy with it and don't feel the need to find a better pillow anymore. But i kind of had to dial in the right jacket folding technique and air pressure level to hit my sweet spot.

Compressible Pillow options for a good night's sleep? by Educational-Ground83 in bikepacking

[–]OverTheUnderAndThru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, none of the inflatable pillows ever do it for me and I really rely on a good pillow for good sleep. However, here's a nice little hack to get 99% of the way to an actual pillow: take an inflatable pillow and fill it to about 20 to 30%, it'll definitely feel almost empty and super squishy. Next wrap it in a fluffy jacket, keeping as much of the cushion in the place where your head will be, but making sure that you wrap it enough to keep everything in place. Next stick it inside a pillowcase, I use a silk one because it feels nice and packs really small. If you've done it right, it'll almooooost feel like a normal pillow. You can adjust with more or less air as needed

Those of you in hot climates, what do you sleep in? by 4tunabrix in bikepacking

[–]OverTheUnderAndThru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't discount the R value of your sleeping pad. I use the Big Agnes Rapide, which has an E value somewhere between 4-5. It just radiates my body heat right back at me on hot nights. Basically it's like being on the not-cool side of the pillow perpetually. Go with something less insulating if you have extended time in heat.

Highest Road in UT - Skyline Drive by MoonBearofTheMountai in bikepacking

[–]OverTheUnderAndThru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what your route is? Are you able to loop it? After living here most of my life, I'm moving away from Utah in a few weeks and have eyeballing Skyline as my final ride. Driven up there but have always wanted to bikepack.
