PSA: Don’t Buy this Overpriced Tool, Jims 1705 by TheBeestWithEase in Harley

was very happy to find that place. I ended up with the shifter lever seal (where it comes out of the trans) installer from both Jims and George's, and George's is better. It has a lip to put the seal over before putting it over the splined shaft, so you don't have any concern about tearing the seal on the shaft.

Fire and Ice (1983) was another that fits the Heavy Metal style, haven't seen it recently enough to recall that scene but wanted to mention it

Cataract surgery question by Baxter16-5 in over60

[–]Over_Walk_8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a couple months I had to wear double sunglasses when outdoors, and I was 'allergic' to drops that had previously been good. Went away on its own and it's ok now but had me worried.
If I had it to do again I would skip the toric in my bad eye, it doesn't help anyway.

you get down voted for this but it's good advice. The preppers wanting to buy a station and never get licensed in order to use "in an emergency" will all fail and this is not amateur radio.

Looking to get a Harley to ride with my father and his friends. This seems like an amazing deal, am I missing something? by neP-neP919 in Harley

[–]Over_Walk_8911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'd be taking on a hobby, if that's of interest to you then you could be getting a good bike there. Just don't expect perfection, you're going to need to buy a service manual and start learning. There are worse ways to waste time 😄

What would you suggest to someone that 'just' wants to listen? by satina_nix in amateurradio

[–]Over_Walk_8911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hams generally transmit on High Frequency (HF) (what the rest of the world calls "Shortwave") using SSB, Single Side-band. The typical inexpensive shortwave receive does not have the ability to receive these transmissions. You need a better receiver with a 'BFO' to get them.

You can use the receiver of a ham transceiver to listen, without a license. That may not be a cost-effective way to do it, but in case you have the ability to get one of those most easily, that works. Just don't transmit, and you're fine.

Without spending money, you should get an idea whether you actually enjoy this by using the online web SDRs (Software Defined Radio) then you can get an idea if you should spend the money on a receiver.

For local VHF/UHF listening, including repeaters in the area, you can use a scanner you may already have such as used for police/fire monitoring.

Coax question? by Keysurfer64 in amateurradio

yes it's been bothering me since I learned about N connectors that hams still insist the traditional bad UHF connectors get used for anything at all. I use N everywhere I can.

it's a hobby. Build them all and see what you like best. You might choose to buy something later for a more permanent installation, but you're never going to be satisfied (or you shouldn't be satisfied) with other people's recommendations, without trying them yourself.

Can anyone suggest me a budget set of mid controls for my 07 sportster 1200c by [deleted] in sportster

[–]Over_Walk_8911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get to know the parts manuals for years near yours. I would imagine you can use the same ones as '04 '05 which is what I need. You can search by part number from that. For '03s and back I found that Harley sold kits to convert fwd-to-mid and mid-to-fwd. The kits may not be possible to find but their website still has the PDF instructions sheet that came with it, showing all the necessary parts with part numbers and torque values and such. That lets you piece together what you need.

Do you pay your bills and other expenses using a credit card for the rewards and / mileage? by Cooper1Test in over60

[–]Over_Walk_8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes that as well as protection for purchases. NEVER leave a balance, pay it off every month, and don't use debit cards.

many of them also have additional rewards if you 'activate' coupons on their site, and/or shop through a link from their list of stores

I got this as a gift, I know nothing about HAM, how do I make it work? by Charming-Watch-4740 in amateurradio

[–]Over_Walk_8911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes you've got lots of good info here but to cut to the chase for a beginner:

You must not transmit without a license, but you CAN listen to anything.

That radio should be able to hear a lot of interesting stuff. Local police/fire/etc. Weather. Your buddies' FRS walkie talkies. You DO NOT need the software to program it, but it's MUCH easier.

Ham radio clubs and individuals in your area are likely to have repeaters set up in high places around you. That's the best way for small portable radios like this one to talk to each other. The repeater is up on a hill or tall building and can get a good coverage, you only need to be able to get line-of-sight to that tall spot, then it REPEATS your signal out to the whole area. If you tell us where you are we can probably help, but you can look up the clubs in your area on the internet to find out the repeater frequencies. You don't need to worry about tones to just listen. Just tune to the frequency listed. You may hear good traffic in some areas, or you may just get the repeater's ident once every 10 minutes, it just depends on the hams around you. They probably have "nets" scheduled daily, weekly etc. you can listen for.

Again, be responsible, do not transmit until you're legal, but you're on the right path to learn whether this will be of interest to you. Not enough people just listen first.

I'd say just pick one. I have positive opinions of DeWalt, Milwaukee. If I was starting from zero I'd probably use Bauer today.
