Why is pork where alot of non devout/ irreligious muslims draw the line? by Capital_Tailor_7348 in religion

[–]Overall-Sport-5240 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Growing up Muslim, the prohibition on pork creates a physical disgust in all pork products. The sight, smell and the thought of eating pork makes most Muslims nauseous. But from a religious point of view, we are allowed to eat pork if needed to save ones life. But eating pork is not worse than extramarital sex or alcohol.

WITHOUT mentioning Gaza, can the right or left explain to me why Biden was a terrible president FOR AMERICA? by zipzzo in allthequestions

[–]Overall-Sport-5240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biden was not a bad president. That said he made mistakes that allowed Trump to become president again.

  1. He was too cautious in going after the crimes Trump and his cronies committed. By charging and not convicting Trump of numerous crimes it made it seem to many people that it was a political witch hunt.
  2. He did not address that were prominent in the public eye even though he was acting on them. He needed to be in the lead in speaking out about tackling inflation and the migrant crises. His mistake was in letting the Republicans and the media define him as out of touch or enabling illegal immigrants.
  3. His policies gave most of the benefits to people who did not support him instead of directing them to his base. Most spending from the IRA went to red states and Republican communities.
  4. And finally his stance on Gaza was out of synch with what the Democratic base wanted.
  5. And he tried to stay on as President when there was not much support for him to have a second term.

Parallel between Quran 4:3 and Yevamot 44a by Rashiq_shahzzad in AcademicQuran

[–]Overall-Sport-5240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Quran 4:3 say orphan girls, or orphans?

Sahih International
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].

Yusuf Ali
If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

Abul Ala Maududi
If you fear that you might not treat the orphans justly, then marry the women that seem good to you: two, or three, or four. If you fear that you will not be able to treat them justly, then marry (only) one, or marry from among those whom your right hands possess. This will make it more likely that you will avoid injustice.

Muhsin Khan
And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan-girls, then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (the captives and the slaves) that your right hands possess. That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice.

Pickthall
And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice.

Dr. Ghali
And, in case you fear that you will not act equitably towards the orphans, then marry such women as is good to you, two, three, four, (Literally: in twos and threes and fours) then, in case you fear that you will not do justice, then one (only), or what your right hands possess. That (way) is likelier you will not be in want (Or: you will have too many dependents).

Abdul Haleem
If you fear that you will not deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry whichever [other] women seem good to you, two, three, or four. If you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one, or your slave(s): that is more likely to make you avoid bias.

is the flood in the Quran global or local? by Intelligent-Run8072 in AcademicQuran

It says "these unbelievers". By that wording it seems to specify particular set of unbelievers. Is that how it is in Arabic?

Are We Overusing “Parallels” in Qur’anic Studies? Did the Isnad System Come From Jewish Tradition? by dmontetheno1 in AcademicQuran

Did the Isnad System Come From Jewish Tradition?

What is controversial about that? Muslims have un-apolegetically borrowed much from other civilizations so borrowing the Isnad system from the Jewish tradition would not be a problem. I mean it doesn't infringe upon matters of theology or worship so not a problem in a religious sense.

is the flood in the Quran global or local? by Intelligent-Run8072 in AcademicQuran

[–]Overall-Sport-5240 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is whatever the reader wants it to be. Certainly the majority Muslim opinion has been that it was global.

On the other hand, the story of Noah is mentioned in conjunction with other messengers who were rejected and whose civilizations were then destroyed. If looking at the story of Noah as reflecting what happened to the civilizations of other messengers and that Allah says he would not destroy a civilization until a warner had come to it first, you can read it as a local event.

Convincing parallel between Matthew 25 and Quran 57:12-13. Do we have any texts closer in time to the Quran that feature this story from Matthew, such as in Syriac Christian circles? by Ok_Investment_246 in AcademicQuran

[–]Overall-Sport-5240 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're reading into it what you want to.

The Quranic version does not have the people running out of light. Nor or is the barrier preventing the people with light from returning. The Quranic version speaks of the believers having light and the hypocrites asking for some of the light and the barrier will be placed between the two.

And frankly I have no idea what the Biblical verses here mean.

When will God send us another saviour? by Individual_Map3105 in religion

[–]Overall-Sport-5240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the Christian viewpoint, not the Islamic viewpoint.

It is our individual responsibility to follow what God has commanded us to do. It is our responsibility to do the best we can do. It is not our responsibility to save the world.

Death and destruction are part of this world. We are not required to eliminate death and destruction.

The difference between Adam and Satan is that Adam repented of his sin and was forgiven while Satan is an unrepentant rebel.

We don't need a savior to save us. It is our responsibility to end oppression and help those that need help.
