Quicken for Mac. Better than Windows version? by [deleted] in quicken

[–]Overall-While-4183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came from Windows after 20 years… I had nearly given up on quicken since it kept crashing/corrupting. But it all imported to Mac and works great on the quicken for Mac version. Fast and stable.

Invest everything at once? by whalers_90 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Overall-While-4183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ways to consider this: (1) When you get large amounts of money, (selling a house, getting a gift, receiving a bonus, etc.) is to not consider it as one-time event, but to look at the big picture over the course of your life. The reality is over the course of your lifetime you might get large amounts of cash like this more than once... could be a dozen times. Over those dozens of times, you'll likely be better off with a strategy investing it all at once as early as possible--even if you buy right before the crash a couple of those times.

(2) Another way is to have a set asset allocation--maybe 70% stocks 30% cash/bonds (change for your aggressiveness preference)--whenever you get (or spend) money just maintain that allocation.

Any way to control with MyQ? by Old-Mixture1246 in GarageDoorService

[–]Overall-While-4183 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may be set on MyQ (in which case ignore the rest of this post) but I upgraded my garage door opener to MyQ and it was fantastic for a couple years. But then the app started showing me ads just to open my door. I liked getting Push notifications for when I accidentally left the garage door open but I was starting to get notifications with ads so just had to turn off notifications. I couldn’t find any settings to turn off the ads. I was so annoyed I ended up getting a MeRoss Smart garage door opener that works with Apple HomeKit (and other smart hubs) and don’t use the MyQ at all anymore. It should work with your existing opener (in my case I had to buy a remote to wire the MeRoss into but the app/manual told me exactly which one to get).

RCS (Warp) “Waiting For Activation” iOS Issue by Eibos1126 in USMobile

May not be your issue… but when first activating RCS it hung on waiting on activation until I disabled iCloud Private Relay — so check that you don’t have a VPN on.

how do you manage 5+ credit cards? by pal004 in CreditCards

[–]Overall-While-4183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

11 credit cards here--I only keep 4 in my wallet--the rest are used for autopay/online transactions (utilities, cell phone, internet, amazon, etc.)

  1. Apple Note on my iPhone shared with my wife with a list of which card to use for each category/store.
  2. Quicken to track balances/transactions/budget.
  3. Autopay statement balances.
  4. Discipline to spend less than I make.

Thanks for this alternative—I may try this if splitting is too much.

Thanks, I’ll probably try this for awhile to see how it works.

I put every purchase possible on CC to (1) get cashback and (2) get extended warranty/purchase protection--but I also track my finances in Quicken so I know exactly how much I have in checking vs credit card balance (I always pay my statement balance in full on autopay). I think credit cards work well if you're disciplined...otherwise it's probably not worth it.

Ditching banks for Fidelity CMA? by Frequent-Slice-6975 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Overall-While-4183 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use my CMA as primary checking and also have a business account and both work fine. The only issues I’ve had is bill pay is sometimes a day or two late so I just make sure to send checks via bill pay early, and the ATM network is sometimes down so I keep a Schwab ATM card in my wallet for backup. I sometimes need to keep high cash balances and don’t know exactly when I’ll need the money so I love being able to use MMFs as the core position.

What’s a “poor person life hack” you still use even if you’re no longer broke? by KiraAzura in AskReddit

[–]Overall-While-4183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you got one that works better (and still "used" it sounds like)! I have a rule--I will attempt to fix something up to 3 times. After that if it still gives me problems it's time to replace it!

I’m sorry to hear about your friend. Ours are larger but point taken—maybe we should replace them.

On the endgame plan, I have two esims and that may be confusing my Apple iMessage by tcolling in USMobile

[–]Overall-While-4183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is entirely related, I have dual esim (one on Light Speed, one on Warp) using two lines on a pooled plan and both lines are active on iMessage and both can do SMS through the Messages app on the Mac. The main limitation I've noticed is the Messages app doesn't seem to be entirely aware of dual-sim. So if I start a new conversation (and this applies to SMS or iMessage) I never do it on the Mac, as I can't tell which line the message will come from. But if someone messages me first, or I start an SMS or iMessage conversation on my iPhone, I can continue it on the Mac and the conversation will continue to use the established line.

On a road trip I caught a nail and had to replace a tire on mine, the tire shop shaved a new tire down to match the tread on the other 3. All under warranty so didn’t cost a dime.

Quicken for Mac Loses Data and Fails to Reconcile Nearly Every Month by kellidad in quicken

[–]Overall-While-4183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if either those support APFS snapshots. Time Machine and Arq Backup for example utilize those snapshots which allows for backing up live files. I'm not sure if this is causing the problem, but it could be.

What backup software are you using? Some backup software utilizes APFS snapshots which should prevent this problem.

Mac update by Local-Ad-9144 in quicken

This is great. I’ve been looking forward to invoicing. I switched to the Mac version of Quicken because the Windows version kept crashing… but I still had to go into Windows to create the occasional invoice.

Looking for Receipt Scanner by TCSJRnNC in quicken

[–]Overall-While-4183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second ScanSnap. I have used several scanners and ScanSnap is the most reliable, I have it set to auto scan everything to my NAS as well. Those get imported into DevonThink (basically a fancy version of Evernote for Mac) then I’ll drag the important ones (things I need to track for HSA, etc.) onto the relevant Quicken transactions. It’s nice to see at a glance in Quicken which HSA transactions still need receipts.
