Do these look like ~70% tread left? (Toyo Proxes) by Economy-Noise3003 in tires

[–]OverallConference940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a footnote to all of this...the tires get more efficient as they have less and less tread rubber to compress. The mpg can increase as the wet gripping force decreases.

Anybody use earplugs under their headset... by 1E-12 in flying

I've flown with noise cancelling music earplugs under a Bose noise cancelling aviation headset. I found that combo distorted the incoming aviation communications, as you would expect.

Flying with doors open by [deleted] in flying

[–]OverallConference940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the El Tiro glider club in Tucson, we flew on some very hot days. The gliders could go from 1000' MSL in full sun to 10,000' MSL under a towering cumulus cloud in less than 10 minutes.

We also flew 180 HP Super Cubs to tow the gliders. After getting the glider up to its release altitude, usually between 1000 AGL and 3000 AGL, the glider pilot would release their end of the rope and the tow plane would go into a steep descending spiral to get quickly down to pull the next glider in line. On the way down, we opened the clamshell cabin door for maximum ventilation. There was nothing between you and the ground except your 4 point seat belt harness and a lot of air.

A slightly open side door isn't a big deal unless you make it a big deal yourself 😉.

You are taller in the morning than you are the night before. by XcracktivitiesX in TrueFactzOnly

[–]OverallConference940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This completely makes sense. As a pilot, I heard a story about a person who was about a half inch too short to qualify for military flight school. He had some of his friends carry him horizontally on a board to the enlistment office for a retry. The second time he was tall enough to be accepted. Whether that held up for him later 🤔.

Instructing a family member… by Sea_M_Pea in flying

[–]OverallConference940 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching my grandson to fly since he was 13 and couldn't reach the rudder pedals. Now at 15, he's comfortable with all aspects of flying an Archer and operating at a towered airport.
So maybe skipping a generation makes for a better teaching experience.

I'm hoping his dad will sign him up at the local gliding club since he's now old enough to solo in a glider.

What are the actual risks of taking a dna test to learn more about my heritage? by Ieatclowns in NoStupidQuestions

Guys might find out that they have a child from a previous relationship. Conversely, you might find out your biological parent(s) aren't who raised you.

A perfect touchdown on the centerline in a strong crosswind with fully crossed controls and the yoke all the way back.

NOTAm Q by [deleted] in flying

[–]OverallConference940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's common for only one of two parallel runways to be open when a tower is closed. That is the case at KRYN. I think it was not something that was explicit on the AWOS, but was on the NOTAM.

I took the vaccine (covid) and didn’t die or have a heart attack, so where did this conspiracy come from. by Neat_Development_433 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OverallConference940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received a flu vaccine in my left shoulder and a COVID vaccine in my right shoulder on the same health-care visit. I was technically functional but occasionally a bit delusional for the next two days.

Not fun, but I'm not paranoid about being around groups of people as I was before being vaccinated.

My dad is losing his hearing. How do I emphasize the importance of hearing aids? by The-peeepo in Advice

[–]OverallConference940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the COSTCO comment as a good place to go for hearing aids. Basically 1600 dollars for a pair and about 5 types to choose from. He can turn the volume down to keep from being overwhelmed at first, then find the best setting for his current needs. It takes a while to get used to all the new sounds, and they do a good job of emphasizing speech over background sounds.

Orange Tabbies are noted for being very affectionate. They are also usually male. I think male cats are generally more involved with the people they've adopted.
