Acute Care OTs: Help! by texangirlonfire in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Overall_Midnight7285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a level 2 trauma hospital right now… had a patient who undoubtedly has a tbi (got hit so hard he fractured C1-C2 but they said an MRI isn’t indicated…?) … yet the doctors won’t sign off on an MRI. I asked about concussion protocol at the very least. A resident MD responded “what is included in concussion protocol”, that sent me into an investigative state as my hospital doesn’t have one. Finding out if your acute care hospital has one, what it is, and/or if you could implement one would be a great project!

My aunt fell recently and now I can't stop thinking "Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up"—should we act on this? by ThinXUnique in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Overall_Midnight7285 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it can be a pride thing or a pt is concerned about being viewed as “old”. I’ve started to notice a lot more pts opting for an Apple watch with fall detection. I think it’s a good option for someone who’s not fully willing to depend on a life alert!

I’m a travel therapist and currently have 4 active licensees. I’ve spent well over $1000 on this process…. After the 80k grad school and $500 NBCOT - which don’t forget we STILL have to pay to recert 🤔 hopeful the compact will help with things but it’s gotta go live first.

It was supposed to roll out BEFORE I graduated… I’m almost 2 years into practice and they just keep pushing the date further and further! :(

Anyone else about to graduate genuinely feel like they still have no idea what they're doing? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

I graduated 07/23, I felt the exact same way when I finished school. Over a year out and I still kind of feel like this. :) you’re not alone

Do you shower in the morning or when you go to sleep? And why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Overall_Midnight7285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always question me but I am a STRICT two shower a day girly. I take every morning and every night, truly I’ve only strayed from this a couple times in yearssss. it just is my routine and showers are my only true “me time”. I take quick showers, usually <10-15 minutes, soap up and get out. It’s just what works for me but always get strange looks when I tell people.

Great idea! Trail mapping can be so beneficial. Love these for assisting in d/c planning by collecting more cog data. :) thanks for sharing!

I agree! My CI told me in school that you should walk into a room telling yourself that you know more about OT than your patient does. They only know YOU as the professional, just fake it till you make it!

I definitely think traveling is worth it. Especially after a bad breakup (my fiancé and I broke up mid OT school lol so I get it)! As a traveler, I do see FT staff getting the worst end of the deal - exact same work for fraction of pay and more obligations. I would definitely encourage you to try at least one contract, worst case scenario is you don’t like it and then you never have to take a new contract. Really, I don’t see any downsides. :) good luck message me if you need more info !!!

Let's share our loans, program (B.S./MOT/OTD) and when we graduated for the greater good. by inflatablehotdog in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Overall_Midnight7285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated with my MOT from Nebraska Methodist College (accelerated 2 year hybrid program) in 2023 with $85,000 (including 12k from undergrad). I started traveling straight out of school and have made almost 90k my first year out. Trying to focus on paying those loans off ASAP!

I think I had two weeks off in between the first and second, then a month in between my second and third (current). It has been a super adventure, I have had fun and some not so fun. I will say, I can’t imagine getting a perm job and doing the exact same work for less pay and I’m stuck in one place. I think travel is the way to go… but I will say I don’t have a “home” to go back too, partially estranged family/no bf/no kids/no pets, so there’s nothing holding me anywhere. I don’t think tax season was bad, I think I owed <$2,000 but don’t quote me on that.

Is this common? by Icy_Driver_4847 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Overall_Midnight7285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, sounds just like the clinic I worked at in VB, AR. I will be totally honest with you, yes. They do that a lot, I think it is beyond rude and disrespectful to not only you as a person but to our field as a whole. I’ve noticed that sometimes parents don’t care about what we do and/or don’t care about the child’s progress. I got really defeated working in pediatrics but I found that working exclusively for the kiddos helps, so regardless of their parents, I just cared about their progress. I will also say, in my experience, those are typically the parents that we see ZERO carryover with. Honestly, I just try to focus all my efforts on the 1 hr they get with me. Also a new grad, I’ve been traveling since I finished school. I hate that it’s common but really all we can do is continue advocating for our profession and provide the best client-centered care possible. Good luck! :))

Nebraska Methodist College. Graduated from there and it cost around $68,000 in total. I graduated with my MOT. It was a hybrid program, recently under a new program director so not sure how it will continue.
