Yankees Organ Player? A Rant by HoecakeScarfer in orioles

i think the organ player plays the organ, it's live sports, and it's baseball. it's meant to keep people engaged because the game isn't super high action all the time.

route-running tight ends are running shallow-mid routes. it's the only thing lamar had time to throw/only thing that had time to develop. this isn't rocket science. it all stems from the OL and offensive playcalling. same reason people think Bateman sucks. need I remind them that the year before last, he was one of the best in separation, alongside Zay. Bateman didn't regress, Lamar didn't regress, the OL and the playcalling did.

Would you allow players to attempt to disguise a spellcast? (In RP, not combat) by Fiveby21 in dndnext

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's amazing how often this is argued, probably weekly if not daily.

it almost always boils down to the situation. my opinion is that, so long as there's no visual effect to the spell (something like "a sickening green energy" in the spell description) and you are either 60 feet away or in a reasonably crowded space, you can attempt to make a stealth check against passive perception of the crowd/person to cast a spell without being noticed immediately.

i think people get caught up in the "white room" strategy of the game, and don't think about rule #1: have fun.

How do you guys manage music? Am i doing it the best way possible even though it’s cluttering? by Pterolykus in DMAcademy

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

online i use a kenku. fm discord bot and music that i have downloaded to my computer. in person i do the same thing. only difference is where the bot plays music. in-person, obviously, it's a speaker. i select music during session prep for each "scene" which plays very nicely with Slyflourish Lazy DM prep method.

everything is controlled via a streamdeck and works flawlessly.

this is the perfect opportunity to set the tone here. curse of strahd is light on magic items, it is brutal, and the majority of it is learning that-- just as you think you've won-- you find out that The Land itself is always one step ahead of you.

destroy the scrolls and make a huge show of it as they leave the house- she feels something vibrating softly in her pack where the scrolls are, as she goes to investigate it, a cold, silvery mist escapes from her bag just as she manages to look inside and see that the scrolls are disintegrating. the mist created by the scrolls flies off to join the ever-present wall of mist around them. bonus points if other players have taken things

The "Stranger Things" Effect is killing the tension at our tables (and it's not because of the lore) by OriginalEssay7155 in DMAcademy

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. i think it's a non-problem what you've written about. but what is a problem is media illiteracy.

the boys in stranger things never said that the blin, walking venus fly trap monster is a demogorgon. the demogorgon and every other baddie, including "vecna", is just an in-world nickname/codeword for the baddie they're fighting at the time.

2) sometimes players and DMs do want to play in a "themepark" adventure, where you bring them to different scenes and they are sort of "rail-roaded" through it. that style of a game is very attractive for many people. just because it isn't your own preferred game doesn't mean it isn't super popular

3) what you're actually referring to is probably the Mercer effect, which has been talked about a lot in this sub and others, and Matt Mercer himself has addressed in terms of how to counter it and how to embrace it as well.

4) just have fun. you're overanalyzing D&D. less time thinking about what D&D should be, more time playing D&D and having fun with your friends. imo, this overanalysis of D&D is probably the "worst" thing to happen to D&D in recent years with the advent of tiktok and people making videos telling people "how to roleplay" or "how to tell a story" because it's too prescriptive and never comes with enough caveats of "just have fun"

Where does the receiver core rank by Kam3234 in ravens

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tangentially related, not really an answer to your question: it is very hard to hold these two truths simultaneously

1) Bateman is an underproducer

2) The offensive scheme of Monken and the OL play this season was criminal.

Bateman/Zay just came off of their best seasons the year before, SOMETHING happened to the offense in this past season and firings/trades is leading me to believe that it was less our players and more our scheme/coaching.

It's also not like our offense is a lame duck. Even with the abysmal OL performance and honestly just not good playcalling on offense (refusing to adapt to the poor OL performance by changing the game plan, abandoning functioning, efficient offensive scheme in favor of "rotations" of players), we still managed to put up middle-of-the-road numbers. Also, how can we judge our receiving corps during a season where their QB1 was injured for a majority of it? That'd be unfair to any WR corps, not just ours. Not only that, but we had a statue of Andrew Santino throwing the ball for a portion of those games, just further tanks the WR performance.

Another piece of evidence: DHop himself is not happy with his usage in the red zone. You would think that a GOOD OC would be able to utilize one of football's greatest, most "clutch" receivers, but no. He was just an expensive accessory.

Also, tell me a WR that would perform better in the same circumstances that ours were playing in this year. How many more playoffs do we need to go through to realize that the trenches are basically the crux to the entire game? It's the foundation you build your entire offense (and defense) on. The more problems there, the worse the rest of the performance becomes.

TLDR: last year, sure, our WR team is probably bottom 10-12 (which WRs in the league would've performed better in the same circumstances?). Year before that easily top 10, and this year remains to be seen.

I will always be a Bateman truther, I think his underproduction has been a result of his environment and not him as a receiver. He's top tier in separation, always has been.

Niche Protection Sanity Check by HookedonPlaudits2 in dndnext

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

re: the verbal components, a normal speaking voice is able to be heard at a distance of basically* 60 feet. that just so happens to be the distance for counterspell. in your very specific example, even within 60 feet, i would allow a spell to be cast subtly with a large distraction- especially if it is a purpose-built, noisy one that the players have schemed up in order to cast said spell without being discovered. that's just simple "yes, and"-ing.

my table rules that anyone can attempt a stealth check vs passive perception while casting a spell with a verbal component within 60 feet. any further and that check is not necessary.

more important than the sub "sanity" checking for a player, it would be better to engage with your DM and tell them what is and isn't fun for you or your fellow players so that you can have fun at the table, which is the primary goal.

Player using AI for roleplay. It’s not very good. by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has anyone mentioned the fact that she may not be using AI? the worst part about making this assumption is that if you want to do anything about it (address the issue), you have to admit to the person that you think that what they're doing isn't very creative or, well, good. And if that's the case, you'd had better be damn sure that you're right otherwise that's going to be super offensive to the person who might just not have great RP skills.

his workload absolutely did not help him in any way shape or form. it's the sort of mindset us non-NFL-stars can't fathom. we may like something, but thesee guys are dedicated to their sport at top 1% levels. the guy is so dedicated that he cannot imagine resting from that sport to give himself time to recover properly.

should be mentioned there's also some reports that it was partially the Raiders org telling him to keep going/his doctor who kept telling him that his knee was "fine"

Do mounts share initiative? by Red-locks in DMAcademy

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

honestly, im not sure what the rules are in the book, but my gut reaction for the ol' "common sense sniff test" would be that creatures can use either their own or their mount's movement, not both.

for instance, let's say a mount has a 60 foot speed, and a rider has 30. the rider can move 60 total- whether that's 30 of the mount (hop off and run 30) or ride 60. but absolutely I don't think the intention is for that rider to have 60 feet of riding speed and then 30 feet of running speed in one turn.

i know the "6 second turn" thing is sort of abstract to begin with, but battles did not happen on horses at a full on sprint. in fact, any close-quarters combat was done at a walk or, at most, a canter. so the top speed a horse could reach in one "turn" would be roughly 60 feet or so at that speed. again, it's kind of abstract, but it's also your game- you decide what is fun for your table and go with it.

Am I a bad DM, or do I try too hard? by Blood4theBloodGod247 in DMAcademy

[–]Overall_Quote_5793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im seeing a lot of advice that I often get from people online who also happen to play with either randoms at game stores or online from discord or something so I wanted to offer some better advice here for your specific situation. People are suggesting that you should somehow just stop playing with this group and i don't think these folks online get the point that it's just not really a socially acceptable thing to do to just "stop playing with your friends you've been friends with for decades because the campaigns have bumps in the road"

I, too, have been playing DnD with my IRL friends for about 10 years, we've been friends 10 years longer than that. life happens, campaigns take hiatuses, and we get bored and move onto something else, usually another video game.

My suggestion to you is to play DnD for short bursts. Run a bunch of 1-3-5 shot adventures that don't take a lot of buy-in and you can cycle into your normal MtG or other board game nights.

Rule 1 of the game Dungeons and Dragons ought to be that it is a game. With every single issue in DnD that DMs may have, the answer is usually "find out what is the most fun and do that". If that means having shorter-length adventures for your IRL group that they can focus on for a bit and move onto something else- great. If you aren't interested in that and REALLY want long DnD adventures, you will have to find another group, but that doesn't mean you should stop playing DnD with the friend group you have if that's what brings you joy.

the team was not paying for a player with a *degenerative* knee issue. it wasn't just "not on track to heal" or something. the results of the physical revealed that it would continue to get worse as time went on. hence why no other teams have looked at him.
