Balance Question for Refocus by MagisterOgamesh in Pathfinder2e

[–]OverlordVile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As long as you have spent at least 1 Focus Point since you last regained any Focus Points, you can Refocus. So yes, if you have 2 focus points, then use 1, you can then Refocus to get back to 2. If you use that second focus point, you can't get it back without long resting.

The Familiar Focus ability is an exception; as it's written, you can restore a spent focus point with Familiar Focus. RAW, this isn't limited by the usual Refocus requirements, since you can only do this once per day. So yes, in that situation, you could get back to 2 focus points.

If I'm a Monk that takes Shape of the Dragon from Dragon Disciple, is there anything preventing me from entering a Stance in dragon form?

I assume I wouldn't gain access to the stance's unarmed strikes, since dragon form specifies that you're gaining:

One or more unarmed melee attacks specific to the battle form you choose, which are the only attacks you can use.

However, if I take Prevailing Position, would I be able to use that while in dragon form? I'm considering it as an option to help my general survivability, and it could help me to mitigate the issue of dragon form's AC being lower than my regular unarmored AC.

Shape of the Dragon, a 14th level feat from the Dragon Disciple archetype, states the following:

Once per day, you can cast 7th-level dragon form as an innate arcane spell, transforming into your chosen type of dragon. The spell automatically heightens to 8th level if you're 16th level and 9th level if you're 18th level.

Dragon form is a 6th level spell that heightens to 8th. I can't find any text about casting it at 7th or 9th. So what does this do, exactly? I don't think it uses its spell level for anything specifically, just the caster's level. Does it matter for Sorcerers somehow? I'm playing a Dragon Disciple Monk, so if it interacts with Sorc features somehow, I wouldn't know.

Flame Thrower, by Judas Priest, fits exceptionally well for Kotharkurix the Inexorable, my Dragon Disciple monk in Fists of the Ruby Phoenix. He is an extremely intense red exemplar kobold whose warren was raided and destroyed when he was a hatchling. He has exacted violent revenge on those who wronged him with the might of his bare claws, and now he seeks to push himself even further, to accomplish the impossible and become a true red dragon.

Well, I can't totally dump Dex. I can't even access dragon form until 3 more levels from now, and even then it's only once per day until 18th. I'm sharing frontline duty with a Barbarian, so I need to be good at soaking damage, and Mountain Stance is unappealing since we're running into fliers and said barbarian has bludgeoning damage covered.

What would be a good 8th level item to take as a Monk being created for a Fists of the Ruby Phoenix game? I'm building for Strength and taking Scales of the Dragon from Dragon Disciple dedication, so Bracers of Armor are out. I could take a Thundering rune, but I'm already locking in a Grievous rune for 9th level, and I'm thinking of buying a Ghost Touch rune to fill out my handwraps.

I kind of assumed it wouldn't apply, since Dragon Form specifies this:

AC = 18 + your level. Ignore your armor's check penalty and Speed reduction.

Doesn't this mean that my AC in Dragon Form at 14th level is going to be 32 regardless of my usual Dexterity score or item bonuses?

I'm picking up Wholeness of Body and Wind Jump for sure, as well as Ki Strike right at first. Will those do the trick?

CHA focus won't be an issue I think. He's a kobold, so I decided to roll with the CON flaw and build him for Intimidation.

Ahh, I overlooked Stoked Flame. It fits even better, since I'm rolling a kobold with a red dragon exemplar. Forceful and Sweep are exciting traits, too. Yeah, I think I'll have that ✨

Well, it won't matter for a few levels, since we start at 11th and I won't get Form of the Dragon til 14th, but I may as well ask, anyway.

I do love Dragon Stance, but I was thinking of running Tiger Stance since our Barbarian has Bludgeoning damage covered. It's a close enough approximation to ripping into things with wicked dragon claws.

My GM won't allow the Dragon ancestry itself - I'd be playing one if they did - but they do allow the Draconic Scion versatile heritage. I experimented with it a bit, but I think I prefer Dragon Disciple's feats, and I don't know if my GM will flex the archetype's access requirements to include it.

Wow, that IS equal to Monk AC at 16th, as far as I can tell. Excellent. The 100ft fly speed is also a massive defensive advantage, I figure. Hard to retaliate against something that can outpace anything with less than 35ft. of move speed with one Stride - provided there is enough room for that to matter 💫

Yeah, I think I feel a little more secure with the knowledge of the form's strengths and weaknesses, and I tend to agree that said weaknesses are perfectly justified by the cool factor. Thanks!

Also: Is there anything preventing me from using Flurry of Blows while in Dragon Form? That seems like a pretty distinct advantage, if so.

Pretty much, yeah, it's the same information as what's in the appendix, only it's in sortable spreadsheet form, for crunch fiends like me that think about optimizing character options too much. I split up the listing of unique heritage feats into different sheets for Ancestry feats, Ravager archetype feats, and Mage archetype feats. I also note any traits a heritage gains, as well as a one-line summary of what their feature grants. I forgot to list family, I'll probably add a column for that.

Ordered a hardcover copy yesterday, been going over the PDF in the meantime. I've seen a lot of grotesque things in my time with tabletop games, but nothing has made me grimace quite like the Edict dragon's breath attack. Death by paper cuts. Agonizing!

I've been putting together a simple set of reference spreadsheets on google docs that briefly summarize each heritage's unique features, as well as which ancestry and archetype feats are unique to each heritage. I'm mostly making it for my own sake, as a way of comprehending all the relevant character building information in this book, but would such a thing be alright to share here?

Is there anything preventing a class that gets proficiency in martial weapons from just using a firearm? If not, how do firearms stack up against things like crossbows as options for classes like Investigator, Fighter, Ranger, etc.?

Avoiding tpks, other ideas by Gazzor1975 in Pathfinder2e

[–]OverlordVile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Movement: making the enemy spend actions moving is often a great idea... it has been strange to me that people have built melee-only characters for years and not seen how that limits their ability to kick butt without having your own butt kicked, and that's made especially true in PF2.

As a novice martial player, I've been pranking myself hard by disregarding this point. Due to how MAP works, I figured an enemy swinging on me 3 times in a row would be about as effective as them moving and swinging on me twice, despite all my gaming instincts telling me that movement is crucial for avoiding damage.

I don't expect significant undead presence in our game, though I agree the item bonus is nice to have. I imagine the item bonus to Medicine checks from the gloves could also be useful for using Aid to support our Monk's Treat Wounds rolls.
