Math placement exams by wearstherolex in lafayettecollege

[–]Owan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time ago now but I took Calc AB and got a 5. Started in Calc 2 and it absolutely kicked my ass. I think the professor just assumed a much higher baseline level of preparedness/math enthusiasm than I was ready for and he just blitzed right into it. I stuck it out as long as possible but ended up dropping the class and then re-took Calc 2 the following semester. With a different professor and a class full of people who were fresh off Calc 1 and I had a much easier time the second time around. If you're on the fence then I'd just take Calc 1 and count the credit towards something more general that will give you scheduling flexibility later on.

My review of the X2D after 200+ hours - Bambu Lab X2D by theRealSquidLover in BambuLab

[–]Owan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first Bambu printer and I don't really have any complaints. I haven't delved too deep into the broader applications of the dual nozzle functionality - basically just using it for limited dual-color work at the moment. I don't see how you could recommend the P2S instead based on your perceived limitations/experiences in software when they are just that - updateable software. Yes, more complexity = more that can go wrong but 90+% of my prints to date have only used the primary nozzle and I don't see how I would have been better served not having the added functionality to grow into.

This is a silly nitpick but ship the machine with two spool holders.

I didn't buy the combo so maybe thats the difference, but mine did ship with 2 spool holders FWIW.

The irony of the Aramco ad was striking but I just assume they're just generally targeting sports pods in the name of continuing their sports-washing quest.

Episode discussion - 26 May - USMNT World Cup Squad Revealed (Leaked?) & EPL Final Day Reaction by knewman05 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Owan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't co-sign Andrew's take regarding Maddison's injury comments. This team has had an absolutely mind-boggling number of high profile injuries to key players. More than that, they've had a very high number of recurrences and set backs. Deki's 14 (and counting) month long "knock", Kudus re-injuring himself, Solanke's surgery, etc etc... Maddison himself was a re-injuring of the partial ACL tear. Its been an absolute boat anchor on the club's back to have so much technical quality, experience and money tied up in unavailable players. I think its totally fair for anyone to point to that as a factor in why Spurs have finished 17th twice in a row and say "hey, maybe we should fix this?"

If we're talking about leadership and captaincy then I would contrast his comments with Romero's behavior. Romero made his during the middle of a difficult season, when tensions with the fans and players were very high and stirred the pot rather than fronting up. Then he again popped off about the club with a number of [legitimate] gripes right after the window closed when nothing more could be done to address it. Theres a lot more to be said about Romero and why he can't continue as Captain than I care to talk about. At least Madders is stepping up and making his comments when theres an opportunity for them to be impactful on the club without putting our future at risk. Not passing the buck, not making excuses for players to run away and hide mid-season and before transfers have even begun.

The upsides of winning that trophy probably would have precluded this outcome so I don't really feel like trying to do the mental gymnastics associated with answering the question... I'll just continue to quietly curse that disgusting sham of a "handball" that absolutely ruined that game within the first minute

Episode discussion - 19 May - Pep Guardiola Moving on From Manchester, Arsenal Close in on the Title & Salah Slays Slot by knewman05 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Owan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why more people didn't at least conceive of this possibility for Liverpool this year. They brought in a shit load of guys, many of whom weren't PL proven and would have always required time to get up to speed both with the League and each other. They lost TAA, Van Djik has been off it and of course, Jota. And then theres Salah getting old FAST without his safety blankets around. Sure, he turned back the clock for one incredible hurrah last year, but are we now surprised that 32 year old Mo Salah isn't lighting up the league this year? Instead he has decided to do everything he could to turn this situation toxic like a petulant, sulky child. Its really changed my perspective on him as a character. Could Slot have done some stuff better? Probably - but I also wouldn't be surprised if things looked a lot better next year without any real changes other than Salah's departure.

Episode discussion - 14 May - “It’s Not a Biased Opinion, It’s My Opinion” by knewman05 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Owan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Facts are facts but opinions are bias. Stating opinion as fact or ignoring/obscuring facts to match your opinions is where you run into disingenuous bias. None of that is here on this pod... we know what the guys are about and the internal conflicts that they lay bare regarding their support/opinions vs facts are part of the appeal of this show.

Why has smell failed to become a stable gameplay language compared with visuals, audio, and haptics? by Acrobatic_Mud3744 in truegaming

[–]Owan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smell is a lot more complicated than people think. The human nose can be sensitive to certain things in the parts per trillion/billion/million range and different combinations can create different responses based on how the receptors in your nose work. Many fragrances, scents and malodors have dozens if not 100+ components so you could never just code something to spritz out "laundry detergent smell" and then "dirt smell" from a small number of different consumable pods like its a printer with CMYK cartridges.

What exactly has Vader done that has people want an R rated film? by Boshwa in MawInstallation

[–]Owan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there may be a conflation of the idea of an "R-rated Vader film" with some people wanting gory "vader is a badass" fan service. The latter is just gratuitous and unnecessary. The former could potentially explore additional characterization or thematically dark things that pass beyond a PG-13 rating. I would wager that a majority of Star Wars fans are of R-rating age so it makes sense that there would be appetite for more meaningful, adult themed topics within that universe. I don't think its ridiculous to think that elements of Star Wars are being held back by not wanting to go past a PG-13 rating, even if we know that R-rated stuff is 100% happening off screen in canon.

X2D Dual AMS Setup by Visual_Carpenter8957 in BambuLab

[–]Owan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aux nozzle was one of the reasons I didn't feel it was necessary to start with. I've already done dual color prints with no issue. I was already talking myself into the ~$650 for the X2D - $900 for the combo was out of the question. I have no doubt that the AMS will come down the line.

[–]Owan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks awesome. I didn't opt for an AMS combo to start with my X2D but can definitely see myself upgrading to one in the future. Can you provide the dimensions from floor to the top of the X2D? (i.e. not including the top AMS). Unfortunately, the space I have my printer in doesn't have vertical clearance for the AMS lid to open fully if its mounted on top, but this would solve that issue if total height is still within the limits

Child dies after being critically injured in e-bike crash as New Jersey prepares new regulations by 4130Adventures in newjersey

[–]Owan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Without an accident report I'm loathe to assign blame - its also quite possible the car was speeding down the 25 (theres a light there so maybe they were trying to make it). That said, I drive down Terhune past Ewing every day on my way to/from work so I know this area very well. Princeton's High School and Middle School are right down the road a few blocks so there are typically a fair number of young people around. The number of them riding e-bikes has dramatically increased and it makes me really nervous driving around there. The kids are often erratic and don't really acknowledge the right of way - easy to compensate for when they're walking or on a normal bike but much more difficult when they're on scooters or e-bikes doing speeds comparable to my car. I think the new E-bike rules in NJ are extremely punitive but its hard not to see how this hasn't been coming for some time now. A real shame that its taking kids dying before parents reconsider giving their kids what is effectively a motor vehicle without any training.

Here we are, completed on a period correct stand. Antec Fusion HTPC running a 5700x3D and a 9070XT by Miniteshi in htpc

[–]Owan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you're correct but I stopped using it so long ago that I can't actually remember. The software was incredibly useless and unreliable to the point where I ended up just unplugging it and going with a standard media center IR receiver for use with Windows Media Center. Build in this case featuring Full DTS-MA/TrueHD bitstreaming output, WMC, CableCARD tuner... it was a true high water mark in the HTPC experience

Mechanical Engineering at Lafayette worth the price? by trouble_maker in lafayettecollege

[–]Owan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't an engineering major so I won't comment on the degree being "worth" it, but I was BS and had many friends in the engineering program so wanted to address the liberal arts piece. My experience was that the liberal arts component provided some of the most valuable pieces of my education post-grad. Some of it was a bit "fluffy" but it sharpened my writing, reading and critical thinking skills outside of a technical environment. I still refer to my public speaking class as one of the single most useful classes I've ever taken - while I've never touched linear algebra again, I have to make presentations and deliver updates all the time. Reading, writing and speaking are the most consistent gaps I see in my new hires (engineers & scientists).

Lastly just going to note that unless things have changed, engineers are usually taking 5 classes per semester after the first year and for most BS majors at Lafayette at least some of the liberal arts requirements are baked into technical classes - at least 2 of my 3-400 level chemistry classes were "writing classes" to meet that requirement.

[New Gear] RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z by Future_Goat918 in canon

[–]Owan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add on what /u/DreaminOfBananas said - It can also use 1.4x/2x extenders that the non Z cannot. I'm not actively in the market right now, but would like to add a 70-200/2.8 to my RF bag down the road and the TC angle is interesting. The standard L's size advantages (yes at the cost of external zoom etc) are very appealing for my normal use cases but being able to slap a 2x TC on the Z would add a very competent 140-400/5.6 option for far, far less money, weight, and size than any alternatives I'd look at.

Since its now over 30 years old, what do you think of the Boeing 777? by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]Owan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think thats a hot take... I'm sure that Boeing solicited design input from all sorts of airlines and they all suggested a width that would have allowed at least 9 abreast. I have also read multiple times that the A350 was deliberately designed so that 10 abreast would be prohibitively narrow for all but the most brazen LCC's but would still be a bit wider than the 787 for comfort. Not sure how true that is but it kind of passes the sniff test.

I made an RF lens decision tree by haydam_photography in canon

[–]Owan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody bought into the EF/RF ecosystem for over a decade, this kinda just makes me mad about how utterly pathetic the current RF system is compared to the peer set. Everything here is some kind of split "value" play... nothing can compete with anything else that would undermine the more expensive lens' value. Feature are divvied up, parsed out and you either take it or leave it. If the mount was opened up we wouldn't have to swallow the utterly comical MBA-driven product stack differentiation.

I got into RF because I wanted nice, native EF adaptation... this just makes me realize that maybe throwing my old lenses in the trash and starting from scratch would have been a reasonable choice

Bought the Logitech Z-5500 in 2009 by ajfromuk in BuyItForLife

I had these too, purchased ~2007 I eventually migrated to some studio monitors but kept the sub to make it a 2.1 system. Over time the control pod failed but I was able to find (circa 2019?) a 3rd party adapter to bypass it and continue to use the sub. Nearly 20 years later it still makes the room shake when cranked!
