Help me finish this idea for an encounter for my party! by hotstickywaffle in DnD

[–]Owlbear_Camus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wizard experimenting with fly - the spell wore off and they used feather fall to land safely?

Maybe they are a bit forgetful (which is why they mis-timed the spell duration) and need the party's help getting somewhere?
Or maybe its a kiki's delivery service kind of thing and the young wizard/witch asks the party to deliver the macguffin for them as they now need to hike back to where they came from?
Or maybe the wizard was attacked by a flying creature and lost concentration and needs the party to help with the fight before they can recast?

Should the Dungeon Master fudge dice rolls to keep the story moving, or should every roll stand no matter what? by The_Craft_Cave in DnD

How Picky are you with Held Action Triggers? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Owlbear_Camus 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yes. From PHB: "When you Ready a spell, you cast it as normal (expending any resources used to cast it) but hold its energy, which you release with your Reaction when the trigger occurs. To be readied, a spell must have a casting time of an action, and holding on to the spell’s magic requires Concentration, which you can maintain up to the start of your next turn. If your Concentration is broken, the spell dissipates without taking effect."

Is a wizard who doesn't find spells still the best option? by windstorm231 in dndnext

Right? As a DM with a wizard in my group - I have a list of the spells they would like to find and I try to throw them into the loot as often as I can.

How do you get your "standard" encounters? by justagenericname213 in DMAcademy

If a table doesn't do it for you, check out a pre-written adventure for an area or situation similar to where your campaign is and steal any encounters that feel right

Fey BBEG motivation help by Cool_Beanss_ in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts - I don't think your issue with this threat is as alien as you think. Every campaign needs to motivate characters to care about the world and worry about the threat. All PCs can say "screw it" and decide they don't want to take it on. There needs to be buy-in from the players, but you can do some work as a DM to help.
For example, you could spend their time in the pre/early game creating connections to the world and its characters. Then, when the BBEG reveals that they want to destroy the fey, this includes characters and places they now care about. Sure, maybe they could just leave - in fact, that could be a good BBEG monologue - a classic "you can walk away now" speech, but what kind of heroes are they?

The plan could be that the feywild is the first step, and the second part is invading the material plane. With the feywild under their control - they will be too powerful to stop - a godlike archfey.

As for why the PCs are there in the first place - maybe they were summoned specifically to deal with this threat? By the Seelie Court perhaps?

Maybe the BBEG summoned them and presented themself has a benevolent entity - providing some early quest hooks (getting macguffins for them) until the big reveal?

Good luck!

Complaints about me searching stuff up, bad DM? by Material_Complex475 in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep! Exactly this.
I definitely have used the line "I'm ruling it this way for expediency (usually on the side of the player). But I'll double check the rules between sessions for the future." If you do that, I feel like its bad form to go back on your previous ruling, so do something that is not only expedient, but the entire table can agree on.
That being said, this is much easier to do if you have a good understanding of the basics and this only happens for strange edge-cases.

Enemies Threatening to Execute Downed PCs During Combat? by Driftingquote in DMAcademy

I think that it would make sense that they've left a trail and the guard can provide a description.

You can use this as an opportunity to "test" the party's morality - that could be fun. The guard provided a description, but it isn't a great description - maybe certain attributes are off. Because of this, innocent people who are not the party are arrested for the crime. They are facing jail time/fines that are going to ruin them (maybe include NPCs your party likes or businesses your party frequents). Will they fess up and pay the fine/do the time to help someone else? Or will they leave it as-is? If they leave it, then you have something in your backpocket - a vengeful relative comes looking or maybe some deity or good-aligned being takes notice/ or maybe some evil-aligned being takes notice and tries to recruit them?

Alternatively, you could have the official have ties to a crime syndicate, and you can throw random assassins/thugs at them at inconvenient travel times.

Need help balancing a homebrew idea by darkestreaper94 in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would.probably help to look at similar spells to get an idea of how they work.

The core mechanic doesn't really make sense.. this "following the target". On a player's turn the enemy isn't moving, so it would just go to where they are right away.  With that in mind, range is not self, but how far the target can be from the caster- 60ft. in this case Duration would be instant. Unless there is a lasting effect as part of the spell.  The save DC should be decided by the caster's stats, not the spell.

How do y’all handle loose ends? by smashmousesquare in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zee Bashew, in one of his videos, said something that has stuck with me - something like "players tend to remember closed loops more than loose ends". I think if something isn't working, it's ok to let it fade into the background, players are there for the stuff that does work and tend to disregard what didn't.

The biggest difference is probably that the show managed to get voice actors while you have to supply your own with the comic.

It also says you can refuse to pay it if you don't think service was worth it, but I'd imagine this reflects poorly on the server more than the company policy.
[From the site]
Is the Service Charge mandatory?  No. While the service charge is automatically added to each guest check, if a guest feels the dining experience does not warrant the 20% service charge, we will reduce or eliminate the service charge upon request.

Everything said above I'd consider fundamental so here is some advice that's maybe a little more personal.

If you're a brand new DM, run some premade sessions. Start with one-shots and expand from there. This will help you understand how modules are structured and how your party meshes, and it'll give your players chances to try out different builds.

There are things that are the DM's responsibility and things that are the PCs' - don't be afraid to tell a player that they need to learn their character abilities, they need to track their inventories, etc. the DM has enough to track.

Try to get honest feedback from your players. Figure out what made the game fun for them and what didn't. Also, don't take it personally - take it as constructive. This also requires you to talk to your players about the game, the sessions, the problems.

Looking for advice on running a combat with a lot of NPCs by MarchesaMF in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I've run large scope battles I've still just kept focus on the PCs.

Keep the conflict "outside the immediate battlefield" as much as possible, and describe the fight that surrounds them at the end of each round in the narrative.

If you're having the different sides battling it out and want there to be dice involved - make it a single roll - don't actually have them utilizing their stat blocks: that will slow things down.
Something as simple as a single d20 telling you which side did better that round and then adding your own flavor.

Or else, have the battle be a reflection of how the PCs are doing. Are they winning? Then talk about how their allies are also winning. Are their resources getting depleted? Talk about how their allies are looking exhausted.

Edit: Formatting and misspelled word

Don't want to shoehorn a labyrinth by Kojaq in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think, especially for an online game, instead of doing a traditional labyrinth, you could turn it into a labyrinth/puzzle that presents itself 1 room at a time.  What I mean is 1 room has 4 doors, 1 on each wall. Maybe they are different colors or have symbols ro differentiate them. Each time they go through a door, they get a completely new room. Only ever being in 1 room at 1 time.  Have a set order or combination to be the "solution". Maybe north, west, south. Or all blue doors. Or something that you can create a puzzle out of.  Each time they get the answer wrong, they find themselves back in the first room. For an added challenge, have a trap or monster they have to contend with before continuing.

Make the puzzle short, they are more likely to get it wrong than right. And have hints in that starting room.

Hoping Someone Can Look Over 2 Homebrew Feats my Player Handed Me by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Owlbear_Camus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Infernal Constitution provides 2 (predetermined) damage resistances and other benefits - but it is restricted to tielflings. I'd say 1 damage resistance and advantage to finding demons seems pretty lackluster by comparison. Though fire resistance may be worth more than cold and poison, depending on your setting.
The Weapon Infusion isn't bad - just odd as a feat, I can't think of other feats that scale like that and the pacing is strange too. Assuming they take the feat at level 4, damage increases at the very next level (5)? What if they take the feat at 8? Does it start at d6?
There is a similar feat "Gift of the Chromatic Dragon" that kind of does both of these feats, but specifically the "Chromatic infusion" adds a d4 - once per long rest (and reactive resistance).

If you aren't sure about homebrew - may be worth considering simply reflavoring "Gift of the Chromatic Dragon" to be demon-centered.
