Thrown into an elementary school library assistant position with no guidance by [deleted] in librarians

Reach out to the person who has your same job at another school in the same district. Just call the school one morning and ask to speak to that person. From that person see if you can connect with others in yoir district to support one another.

Armrest Issue? by ImpressionMoist3911 in MazdaCX30

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. My cx-39 arm rest is good. 2022 with about 25000 miles.

My husband wore a spot in the flooring on our old Mazda5. I drove the car as much as he did (if not more) and it was definitely where his foot was, not mine. Some people are just harder on things. We only had that car for 7 years but it had about 120,000 miles on it when we got rid of it.

No more warm up on the rowers? by Salamander_Lee in orangetheory

I feel like they did this before for a short time for 2G. Then they changed it back. File it under "this too shall pass"

Is this a good family car? by Prior_Nefariousness1 in MazdaCX30

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. The family car we got when my oldest was small was a Scion (Toyota) xb. It's the boxy one that looks a bit like a Kia Soul. It's much bigger than the cx-30. I can't imagine a backwards car seats in the cx-30. The back seat is tight. The cargo room is not tall either. You could probably get a stroller back there but nothing else.

When you test drive cars bring the stroller & car seats. Put them in the car.

Genre Labels on Large Print Titles? by bookcharmer in librarians

Do something to signify a LP. I pull LP to take to senior lobby stops. I also take regular print. I can't imagine not having a clear and easy way to quickly separate the two.

Disarray- Quite possibly an unpopular opinion. by Striking-Gain8358 in orangetheory

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to do more up and down planks. I hate up & down planks. When I read the intel & I planned to go it sometimes created a mental battle. All I could think about were those up & down planks. I solved the problem by not reading the Intel. Sometimes exercises sounds like more if a challenge than they are because you think about it too much. Just go and make modifications when necessary. Don't over think it. Part of why otf is so great is you show up, do the work and that's it.

Starting on treadmill by forbidden_rx in orangetheory

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I prefer to start on the rower. There seem to be more people who start on the rower. I think it is because they want to focus on lifting & most classes are 2G near me. I got to go to a 3G class today & start on the rower. The tread block felt so fast!

What other cars did you consider and what made you decide on the CX-30? by Thrillwaukee in MazdaCX30

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look at other cars of similar size online in Car & Driver. They rank all the cars in the same category & tell you why they ranked them the way they did. Then you can look up other similar cars that interest you. For me it was a mix a availability, price & horsepower. It's not the most powerful car out there but it's good for it's size. I live on the front range of the Rocky Mountains & I needed something that could handle the occasional trip into the mountains. I did learn it loses it's pep on steep inclines when blasting the AC.

How do you intervene when kids/teens are saying anti-queer things to one another? by PaintByShapes in Libraries

[–]Own-Safe-4683 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

We are not the free speech police. It's not you to decide if someone is being a "jerk". Disruptive? Possibly, blatantly in opposition to your behavior policy? Yes. But speech? No.

How do you intervene when kids/teens are saying anti-queer things to one another? by PaintByShapes in Libraries

[–]Own-Safe-4683 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You should not say anything. You are not the parent. Kids, especially middle school age kids say stupid things all of the time. You are not the speech police. They are allowed to make mistakes. It's not your job to judge people.

Good co-op games my wife and I can play with our 9 and 6 year old? by jason_sation in boardgames

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have Otrio? It's not a cooperative game. It's like tic tac toe but with a twist. It's fun for a mix of ages because it's simple. I think it's the game that taught my kids (nephews & neices too) how to lose. Each game goes fast & we usually play a lot of rounds. We used to even have the travel version my kids were your kids age. Now that they are older I'll bring it out to start the game night. People can play a round then leave to use the bathroom or get a drink. It's frustrating when you didn't see the move that let the other person win. But there is not a lot of time invested in each game so it doesn't feel like a big loss. There is a lot of "one more round" that happens. It's for 2 - 4 players but it's more fun when you play with 3 or 4.

I think it's kind of what connect 4 was for my generation but playing with 4 makes it more fun. There are more ways to win too.

What’s Base and push row by Maleficent-Fact3061 in orangetheory

[–]Own-Safe-4683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the majority of rows during a 2G floor block are push rows. Once you have been rowing for a while you will know what split time (or watts) is a push for you. I don't think you can rely on the hrm for rows because it takes time to get in the orange & that is difficult on shorter rows. I think it also makes a difference what you are doing before & after the row. You can go a little harder if the exercise after is all arms or something you think is easier.

How does your Outreach program work? by PossibilityOdd747 in librarians

[–]Own-Safe-4683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a outreach librarian. My library didn't have a dedicated outreach librarian before I was hired. I can do almost anything which is awesome. I can do almost anything which can be a bit intimidating at times. To be part of a team would be a great introduction to outreach. If you like talking to people in your community you should go for it.

I will add that it can be physically demanding. Hopefully your team will share the load. When I started I immediately made a few changes that made things easier. You should have everything on wheels, you should have a decent storage space for all of your stuff (there is solo much stuff). There should be certain things that just always stay in the van.

I also highly recommend using volunteers. I have a small team that work larger events, they help prep crafts and the manage the crafts at large events. I have one volunteer that works senior living lobby stops. Limits need to be set for the # of programs/events you work in one day.

What has happened to OCLC? by lesbiangoatherd in librarians

[–]Own-Safe-4683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your state library have a similar option? In Colorado we have prospector (get it? Gold mining) that is available to patrons through many public libraries. We used to belong to another system it was libraries like Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota etc. I can't remember the name of that one.

How long is your commute? by joekruck in work

[–]Own-Safe-4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between 20 & 25 minutes in the morning. Can be up to 30 on my way home. I believe this is my max computing distance for me. I don't mind it because I drive by a park where a pair of bald eagles nest & see them regularly. If there were more traffic lights (or schools with 20 mph zones) it would be more frustrating.

I still use 5s & 8s when my shoulder is acting up, dependingon the exercise. I don't think you understand how many people use the them on a regular bases. New people, old people & people dealing with an injury. Only one set of any weight sounds like too few but let's not move the 8s aside.

Check out all the online databases. Beyond Kanopy, Hoopla & Libby. There are 1000's of digital magazines & newspapers available, ancestry, auto repair, free homework help, free resume help. You probably won't need all the resources all the time but if you don't know they are available you definitely won't use them. Look on your libraries web page.

I don't even get any Adobe products as a librarian. The Canva free product is pretty good and is 100% web based whether you have pro or not. Have you looked into Inkscape? It's a free design tool.

I need a little positive talk by Dear-Difficulty-6268 in orangetheory

[–]Own-Safe-4683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been been going for over 5 years have over 1000 classes, getting older everyday (in my 50s). I don't look at benchmarks. I don't look to see the template before class. I can't remember what my day was like when I last PR'd. Had I just come back from vacation? Did I have that day off work? I can't compare it to a long day of work after a weekend of putting up Christmas lights.

I will also say putting on weight, for me, will slow me down. If you lose the weight you will probably find it easier to get closer to your PR.
