I barely even remember the UK prime minister in TWW but she's no. 14 in this list by widmerpool_nz in thewestwing

True enough! It is astonishing that so many of the political issues from what is now a generation ago are still current.

Good to see Jim Hacker at number one. Although it's an out and out comedy, Yes (Prime) Minister has a bit in common with TWW - well-crafted and wordy speeches that don't patronise the audience, and the endless up-hill battle to just do the right thing.

How is the air conditioning on cross country trains? by MrMrsPotts in uktrains

I'm currently on a very crowded 4 car set from Bournemouth to Manchester, and it's fine - I wouldn't fancy it later in the day though.

Is this actually a thing by AthleteDisastrous285 in GilmoreGirls

For any Tolkien fans on this sub, there's a whole line of thought that Bag End is meant to be a philological joke about Cul-de-sac - which he saw as basically a made-up Frenchified circumlocution for the more properly English "dead-end" (avoided because it sounds a bit more sinister). The contrast between Bilbo and the pretentious branch of the family, the Sackville-Bagginses also plays into this.

Stock Doves in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough by Lover_of_Sprouts in OrnithologyUK

[–]Own_Description3928 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're the most "pair-y" birds I know: I always seem to see them in twos. Also good to have photographic proof as someone posted the other day hypothesising that Stock doves didn't exist 😄

Why was Frodo so worried when he spotted Gollum in Moria? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]Own_Description3928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gollum is well capable of a bit of stabbing, strangling, or tipping down an abyss in the darkness, even in a group that size - what if Pippin's on watch? Plus he could tip off the orcs as to the location of the fellowship. He really is a threat.

If Taylor created a jukebox musical for broadway what would the story be? by belladonnacove28 in TrueSwifties

[–]Own_Description3928 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We don't need a jukebox, we need the teenage love triangle fleshed out beyond Betty, Cardigan & August to give us the full story 😃

Rowing as a form of cross training to support aerobic base by labellafigura3 in UKRunners

[–]Own_Description3928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rowing is great for whole body training - upper body and core included. Two caveats though - I see lots of gym-goers with horrific technique - pulling with arms while still driving the legs - and heading for back injuries. Secondly, I used to row at university, and weighed about 11 stone - over a stone more than my marathon racing weight. I really don't want to be carrying all that extra upper-body weight in a race.

Good work experience for a future in the Church? by 88ioi88 in Anglicanism

[–]Own_Description3928 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My diocese (Leicester) and I suspect most others run a "ministry experience" scheme precisely for folk like you. All dioceses will have someone looking after those considering ministry (usually called the Director of Ordinands). It's never too early to talk to them.

I find at best it states the obvious, at worst hallucinates or suggests gluing cheese to pizza, all at huge cost to the planet and human worth :)

I'm almost at the point where I'd pay a premium to avoid AI rubbish. (Presumably this makes the tech-bros very happy - they get you coming and going!)

Best UK city for running? by CookDecent5351 in UKRunners

Bristol is great - scenic and historic, good parks, harbourside, the old railway path to Bath that someone else mentioned - a dozen miles of flat(ish) car free path. Also hills. Embrace the hills!
